You came to our world to save us and show us how to live and love here, so we may live in love hereafter.
Dear Jesus, divine word incarnate, please teach us to follow you. May our love for you always be made flesh, not ever lost in word or song alone. In prayer, we come face to face with you, like you with the Father and Holy Spirit in love and service. May we likewise come face to face with our sisters and brothers, the least of them most of all. Father in heaven, may the faith you have given us in your son Jesus Christ, our brother, and the flame of charity you kindle in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, reawaken in us the blessed hope for the coming of your kingdom. May your grace transform us into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the gospel. May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos in the sure expectation of the new heaven and a new earth, when with the powers of evil vanquished, your glory will shine eternally. May the grace of the jubilee reawaken in us pilgrims of hope, a yearning for the treasures of heaven. May that same grace spread the joy and peace of our redeemer throughout the earth. On a blessed Advent Sunday and uh, in the absence of Father Jerry, who is still in uh pilgrimage, and uh, this being a missionary mass, and Father Jerry appointed Father Ali Canila to be our celebrant, and this being a missionary mass, we are here three missionaries. Father Ali Cantilia was ordained just at the other year. But unfortunately, 3 months after his ordination, he had uh, he met a very terrible accident that really enabled him and made him a paraplegic. And so he was that able, he could not, he could not go to his first mission. On my right is another missionary, Father Jose Mateo. He's a veteran missionary. He is 16 years missionary in Paraguay and now he is in on his home live. So let us celebrate this mass presiding for us with us Father Algi Canila.

As we begin in this Advent season, we turn to you, O God, source of all hope and promise. We ask that you will bless us, all who gather around it. Grant that our Advent journey in faith may be fruitful in good works, so that we may stand prepared, eager to welcome the coming of your son, our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
Brothers and sisters in Christ, let us acknowledge our sins and to prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. >> Have mercy on us, O Lord, >> for we have sinned against you. >> Show us, O Lord, your mercy >> and grant us your salvation.

Right up to the day Noah entered the ark. They were totally unconcerned until the flood came and destroyed them. So will it be at the coming of the Son of Man? Two men will be out in the field. One will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal. One will be taken and one will be left. Stay awake, therefore, you cannot know the day your Lord is coming. Be sure of this. If the owner of the house knew when the thief was coming, he would keep a watchful eye and not allow his house to be broken into. You must be prepared in the same way. The Son of Man is coming at the time you least expect."

Good morning once again, brothers and sisters in Christ. You know, before I I will start my homily, I am very happy today because this is my first time celebrating mass in this the shrine of Jesus the divine word. It has been my dream since seminary days because I graduated philosophy here in the year 2016. I was not able to say my thanksgiving mass because of the accident that was 2023 days after our ordination Thanksgiving mass classmates. I was in the ICU fighting for my own life. This is the day designed by the Lord for me to say my thanksgiving mass. So I'm very happy and I thank the Lord for the blessing of giving me the grace to say my thanksgiving mass today.
We hear in the gospel today, keep watch and be prepared. Advent season. Today is the start of our Advent journey. It is a time of waiting and preparation for Christmas. We are now on the first Sunday with the theme hope, pag-asa, and we had just lighted the prophet's candle. The first candle is the prophet's candle, remembering the prophet Isaiah who foretold the coming of the Messiah and his return. As we journey this season of Advent full of hope, we are called to keep watch and be prepared. And now the question is, what are we going to prepare then?
Brothers and sisters in Christ, it is our spiritual life. The prophet Isaiah gives us a right orientation to prepare ourselves for the coming of the Lord on Christmas day. The very heart is to be a better Christian. Everything that we should do during Advent season should lead to that and not divert our attention from it. Not the shopping, not the party, the vacation, the decorations, but it's more on spiritual repentance, fasting, and vigilant anticipation. St. Cyril of Jerusalem, one of the church fathers in the fourth century, stresses the need for believers to be alert and be prepared for the final return, making Advent a call to vigilance and repentance. St. Paul in his letter to the Romans in our second reading for today specifically points out the worst attitudes and lifestyle we had that needs to be addressed in order for our spiritual life become so prepared in our waiting for Christ's return. He said, "Or drunkenness, party, sexual excesses, lust, quarreling and jealousy. Ah, pride, aggressiveness, possessiveness, lack of sensitivity, materialism, and vanity. All this are dark spots and moral defects that prevent us to fully prepare spiritually for the coming of the Lord in our hearts. We have to act on it. Let us undergo a spiritual cleansing that is washing. Washing is repentance. Second, watching. Watching is vigilance. Third is worship. And that is hope. Again, washing, repentance, watching, vigilance or vigilance. Third is worship and that is hope. Repentance should lead us to confession during this Advent season. We have to eliminate all blockage in our path to Bethlehem. We have to create a spacious clean in for Christ. Our spiritual alertness or vigilance should develop in us a keen awareness of God's presence in the ordinary events of our life. Circumstances like turning challenges to opportunities. Turn a negative encounter to something positive. Make it a moment of God encounter rather than drowning ourselves to frustrations, anger, and disappointment. And be charitable to our brothers and sisters who are in need. And the third one, they worship, hope. Worship or hope, the virtue of hope sustains us in the dark. I can resonate to this. During those moments that I was struggling between life and death, I hold on to hope in God. Who would have thought even my surgeons gave up on me? Breathing, they're just waiting for me to give up. But fortunately, in the grace and mercy of God, because I asked the question, Lord, is this my poor end? I hold on to that hope, full of faith in him. Lo and behold, he sustained me in the dark moments of my life. Hope is not a blind optimism but a theological virtue rooted in God's faithfulness. When you feel like impatient, shift your focus from what you are waiting to whom you are waiting for.
This Advent season, our Advent journey, we wait with joyful hope for the coming of Christ again. Shift your attention from darkness to light and be an inspiration to our brothers and sisters. From arrogance to humility. From despair to hope. The way to healing and acceptance is to hope in the promises and faithfulness of the Lord. Jesus will come and that is certain. He will come again at an hour we do not expect. Keep watch and guard yourself against destructions and spiritual complacency. Prepare your heart as a dwelling place for Christ. Create a spacious clean in for him. He is coming and his promise is trustworthy. So hope in him faithfully.
Please stand. Let us now profess our faith.
I believe in one God, >> the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man for our sake. He was crucified under Pontius Pilot. >> He suffered death and was buried and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. >> I believe in the Holy Spirit, >> the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, >> who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, spoken through the prophets. We lift our hearts to the Father as we prepare for the coming of his son into the world. Let us ready our heart, mind, and will as we say, Father, grant us your salvation. >> Father, grant us your salvation. >>
May we, the people of God, enter the season of Advent with eager expectation for an encounter with Christ, recognizing the darkness in this world and in our souls, but trusting in God's love. We pray. >> Father, grant us your salvation. >>
May Pope Leo I 14th, bishops, priests, and deacons, inspire in us a renewal of hope that light will triumph over darkness, that love will conquer evil, and Jesus will change the world. >> We pray. >> Father, grant us your salvation. >>
May public servants throw off the works of darkness and corruption and pursue integrity, humility, and empathy for the poor and the weak. >> We pray. >> Father, grant us your salvation. >>

Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo our Pope and Elias our bishop and all the clergy.
