Before we lift our voices in prayer, let's dwell on the promises of God.
The journey of life often resembles a winding path, with twists and turns that can leave us feeling lost, disoriented, and uncertain about the future. With crooked paths, it's hard to see what God is doing in our lives. With crooked paths, we are left confused and unsure about the steps we take. But amidst the uncertainty, crooked paths bring we can go to the Lord who straightens crooked paths. He goes before us to make our crooked paths straight.
In Proverbs 3, we read, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3: verses 5-6. These simple yet reassuring words hold a wealth of meaning, providing guidance and comfort to us who are seeking straight paths. In this scripture, we are advised to commit our ways to the Lord rather than leaning on our own understanding. As we do so, he will make our path straight. The act of making straight paths involves removing obstacles and barriers that hinder progress. Similarly, when God makes our path straight, he removes the obstacles that impede spiritual and moral progress. That can happen in a variety of ways, from providing guidance through difficult decisions to granting us the strength to overcome challenges. It is important to note that the removal of obstacles does not mean an absence of hardships. Rather, it signifies the ever-abiding presence of God that helps us to maneuver through trials and tribulations with perseverance and endurance.
"I will bring the blind by a way they did not know. I will lead them in paths they have not known. I will make darkness light before them and crooked places straight. These things I will do for them." Isaiah 42:16.
When we allow God to make our path straight, we are aligning our will with his. This requires humility and a willingness to surrender our plans and desires to the sovereign will of God. It is also a recognition that our finite understanding cannot lead us in the right direction, and that true fulfillment comes from following the path that God sets for us.
And we also need to understand that God is not the one who makes our paths crooked. It's the devil who doesn't want us to live the life God wants us to live. He doesn't want us to have a relationship with God because if we don't have that connection with God, we won't know to go to him for help when our paths are crooked.

In the Garden of Eden, we see the devil making a straight path crooked. Everything was perfect. But the devil hated what God created and hated that we had a relationship with God. So, he had a plan to mess it all up. "Now, the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, 'Did God actually say, "You shall not eat of any tree in the garden?"' Genesis 3:1. We all know the story. The devil tempted Adam and Eve and made the meat of the tree they were not supposed to eat from, and they were cast out of the Garden of Eden, and the relationship was broken. The devil made our path crooked that day. And if God never went ahead and sent his son, Jesus, to save us, we would be dead in our sins with no chance of being saved. But God went before us and sent his son Jesus to deliver us from the enemy. By Jesus dying on the cross, our path was made straight. And even though the enemy will keep trying to make our paths crooked, God will always keep making our paths straight.
"In this, the love of God was made manifest among us. That God sent his only son into the world so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his son to be the propitiation for our sins." First John 4: verses 9 to 10.
We serve a God who makes crooked things straight. Whatever is crooked in your life today, know that he wants to make it straight. God does not leave you to fend for yourself. Instead, he accompanies you on the journey of life to lead you beside still waters. He doesn't want you to live in confusion. He wants you to trust him as he guides you along in your journey.
In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon wrote, "What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be counted." Ecclesiastes 1: verse 15. Of course, he was talking about things under the sun. Nothing can make crooked things straight. For example, rivers seen from the air meander and wind all over the place. Mosquito limbs are always crooked and cannot be straightened. Our problem is that we get so used to seeing crooked things that don't get straightened out that we become discouraged when something crooked affects our lives. However, we in the book of Isaiah, God declares, "I will go before you and make the crooked places straight. I will break in pieces the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron. I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places that you may know that I, the Lord, who call you by your name, am the God of Israel." Isaiah 45: verses 2 to 3. He is the only one who can make our crooked path straight. He is the only one who makes crooked things straight.
So as you look at your life today and see crooked paths, know that he can and wants to straighten your paths. He will go before you and make your path straight. If you trust him enough to ask him, there is no path he can't make straight. He is able to bring the good out of the bad. Stop trying to make things straight on your own. Instead, call on the Lord for help, and he will answer you.
Now, let's pray.
Heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, I come before you today with a humble heart, bowed down in reverence, surrender, and trust. I lift my eyes to you, the author and finisher of my faith. The one who sees the end from the beginning. The one who walks ahead of me even when I cannot see the road. Lord, I thank you that you are a God who does not leave your children to walk blindly through life. You are not distant or disinterested, but you are near, closer than my breath. And you promise to go before me and make every crooked path straight. God, I confess that I don't always understand the twists and turns of life. Sometimes the path seems dark and confusing. Sometimes I feel lost and unsure of where to go. But your word tells me not to lean on my own understanding and instead to trust in you with all my heart. So here I am, Lord, choosing to trust you even when the road ahead is uncertain. I acknowledge you in all my ways. And I ask that you would make straight my path.
Lord, I ask you today to go before me into every place where I will walk. Enter my relationships, my workplace, my home, my future, and my decisions. Remove the obstacles that stand in my way. Tear down the barriers that keep me from moving forward and bring clarity to the confusion. You are the God who makes the darkness light and the rough places smooth. You are the one who levels mountains and lifts valleys. Do it, Lord, in my life.
Father, I know that the enemy desires to make my path crooked just as he did in the garden. He seeks to deceive, distract, and destroy. But I declare today that the devil has no authority over my steps. For I walk under the banner of Christ. Jesus, you came to destroy the works of the enemy and to restore what was broken. By your blood, you have made a way where there was no way. By your sacrifice, you have taken the path of destruction and turned it into a path of redemption. Thank you, Jesus, for making my path straight by the cross.
God, where my heart has been hardened by disappointment, soften it again. Where I've become weary from the struggle, renew my strength. Where I've tried to fix things in my own power, forgive me. I surrender now. I release control and lay down every burden at your feet. I ask you to take every crooked, tangled, messy situation in my life and bring divine order. Let your will be done, not mine, but yours. You said in Isaiah 45 that you would break the gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. So I pray now for every locked door, every closed opportunity, every situation that feels bound. I speak your freedom, God. I ask you to open what no man can shut and shut what no man can open. Go before me into the unseen and the unknown. Break through the places I cannot break through on my own.
Lord, I also ask for a heart of humility. Teach me to recognize your hand at work even when it doesn't look the way I expected. Help me not to resist the process you are using to make my path straight. Sometimes the straightening comes through discomfort, pruning, or discipline. Give me a spirit that is yielded to your will, trusting that your way is better and higher than mine.
Thank you, Father, that I don't have to walk this path alone. You promise to never leave me nor forsake me. You walk with me, go ahead of me, and even stand behind me as my rear guard. You surround me with favor as with a shield. You are my shepherd, my light, my guide, and my refuge. Today I declare that you are making every crooked place in my life straight. In my mind, where there's confusion, you are bringing peace. In my heart, where there's pain, you are bringing healing. In my relationships, where there's tension, you are bringing reconciliation. In my calling, where there's uncertainty, you are bringing clarity. In my soul, where there's weariness, you are bringing rest.
Lord, go before me into my future. Walk ahead into the days I haven't seen yet. Make a way. Lead me in paths of righteousness for your name's sake. Show me the steps I must take and give me the courage to take them. Even when the way looks unfamiliar, I will walk by faith and not by sight, knowing that you are the one who straightens paths. Thank you for your mercy. Thank you for your faithfulness. Thank you for being the God who redeems, restores, and renews. I place all my trust in you in the mighty, matchless, and merciful name of Jesus. Amen.
