Okay, so let's see how we'd go about cleaning this really dirty perspects roof. As you can see, it's really badly infested with algae and lyken, and it hasn't been cleaned for many years now. This kind of scenario could be typical of many different situations, including conservatory roofs or sometimes carports. Anything similar to that can be cleaned using this same method. This kind of lyken growth can be really stubborn, really quite difficult to get clean. So, let's see how we're going to tackle it.
So, first of all, I'm going to be using a TFR mix on this roof. This is a costic solution, one of the strongest chemicals I generally use. And because it's coic, what that means is that it's actually abrasive to the dirt and the growth that's actually on there. So, you want to be a little bit careful with it and not leave it on there for too long. So, I'll begin by mixing it in a backpack according to the instructions on the label. And for something like this, I'd mix a strong mix of the chemical. Then I will begin by applying it through a water-fed pole brush. And I will choose a good rigid brush with stiff bristles, which is going to help me to agitate that dirt and grime that's on there. But first of all, I'm going to thoroughly wet the surface with the chemical mix and allow that to soak for just a few minutes, making sure that it doesn't dry out.
So now I'm going to use a scrub pad to agitate the surface and try and remove as much of that lychen growth as I can. For this I'm using a walnut pad attached to a handy sleeve. This is a really fantastic tool. You're able to change the pads really easily on the Velcro sleeve and it attaches to any traditional style pole. I'm using a very cheap and easy aluminum pole here in this instance. These walnut or coconut pads are really great for agitating the dirt. You can give the lyken here a good scrub and uh it won't cause any damage to the perspects. So, as you can see, I'm using it across the perspects to loosen the algae and lyken and also on the bars in between as well to get those nice and clean.
So, now that I've loosened the worst of the dirt and before the chemical has fully dried out, I'm now going to give it a good scrub with the waterfed pole brush. So, for this part, I'm using tap water. I can use water from the garden hose. I'm using plenty of water to rinse all that dirt away. And by using the hose and the tap water, you'll save your pure water for later, so it's not going to waste. So, I'm going to give it a good wash down and an additional scrub with the brush and see what I've achieved so far.
So, I've made good progress and I've definitely removed the worst of the dirt and algae that was on the roof, but there's still some remaining. So, I'm going to reapply the chemical and leave that again to soak for another few minutes. So now I'm going back over the roof with the stiff bristle brush to remove any finer points of dirt that's still left behind. Making sure we get rid of all those final bits of dirt and debris that are on there. So it's a good idea to keep a separate brush uh especially for stubborn dirty jobs like this. You can see this one has been quite hard on the brush I'm using. And uh it's certainly taken its toll on the brush. So, this is why I like to use a really rugged brush that's got nice stiff bristles. It's nice and robust. And uh it's definitely good to keep it separate from your regular maintenance brush that you use on everyday window cleaning.
So, then finally, I'm going to go over the roof with my regular maintenance brush. These bristles are a little bit softer, which I use uh for more everyday cleaning. I'm using my pure water now. So, I make sure I give the roof a thorough rinse down and a wash down, making sure that just pure water is left behind and it's going to dry, leaving a nice spotless shine.
Then, if I was cleaning a conservatory, for example, I'd go around and clean the guttering afterwards and wash the windows underneath. In this case, I'm just doing the metal framework and uh supporting structure around the underneath of the roof just to finish it all off, making it all look nice and tidy. And there we go. It's taken quite a bit of effort, but we've got there. What a fantastic result and uh a great satisfying clean.
