He's a miracle working God. And I'm, I'm fishing after some people who've never seen his hand work in their life. I'm talking about seeing God working in your life. Get this. On a regular.

When I see him fixing things that I thought were unfixable. When I saw him solve problems that I never thought in my lifetime could be solved. Can I get a witness from somebody here today? We serve a God that will show you his power and show you his might and show you he is God.

The Lord is righteous in all his ways, gracious in all his works. The Lord is near to all who call upon him, to all who call upon him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear him. He also will hear their cry and save them. The Lord preserves all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy. My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord and all flesh shall bless his holy name forever and ever. Amen. Amen. The word of God is already blessed.
Family, would you pray with me? Eternal and all wise God, we come to give your name the honor. We come to glorify your name. And we say thank you, God. Thank you for your grace and your mercy, 'cause you canceled out the plot of the enemy last night. We thank you in advance for that which you've done, God. We thank you just for being who you are, not just for all that you've done, God, because you're holy. We thank you, God.
Now, God, have your way in this service today, God. Move throughout the Holy Spirit throughout every aisle, every pew. Cancel out every attack, every distracting spirit, every demonic imp. We bind it and send it back to the pit of hell for which it comes for. Father God, someone today who is unsaved, let them come forward today to say, "What must I do to be saved?" Someone who is unsure, backslidden, or unchurched. Let the word fall on fertile ground and not deaf ears. Speak to and through your man of God today, God, let him stand 10 toes down to deliver the word of truth and such a reign of word that all heaven shall prevail and the glory shall be upon him. Dr. Tony Evans is one of the country's most respected leaders in evangelical circles. He's a pastor, best-selling author, and frequent speaker at Bible conferences and seminars throughout the nation. Dr. Evans has served as the founding pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship for over 40 years, witnessing its growth from 10 people in 1976 to now over 10,000 congregants with over 100 ministries. Dr. Evans also serves as president of the Urban Alternative, a national ministry that seeks to restore hope and transform lives through the proclamation and application of the word of God. His daily radio program, The Alternative, with Dr. Tony Evans, broadcasts to millions of active listeners across hundreds of radio stations and digital outlets across the nation and around the world. Dr. Evans holds the honor of writing and publishing the first full Bible commentary and study Bible by an African-American. The study Bible and commentary went on to sell more than 225,000 copies in the first year. Dr. Evans was married to Lois, his wife and ministry partner, of over 50 years until Lois transitioned to Glory in late 2019. They're the proud parents of four, grandparents of 13, and great-grandparents of five. Dr. Evans is currently married to Carla Evans. The couple wed in November of 2023. Thank you so much. Thank you. May be seated. It's always a joy and a privilege for me to come to First Baptist of Glenn Arden to be with my great friends. Not good friends, great friends. The Jenkins is your great pastor and his wife. And I want to thank the Glenn Arden family for how you've wrapped your arms around me and my family during the good times and during the difficult times. Thank you for for loving us and uh, it. I've never been here during the summer before, so I, I was included that I, I didn't have to get all suited and booted. Uh, but I am honored to be here and uh, delighted for the privilege of being in this pulpit of this great church led by this great pastor and and to see the great work that you as the congregants are doing.
If you were, and when you go to a restaurant, they hand you a menu. That menu is a written description of what is offered. Sometimes you can salivate just reading the menu. It just, everything just looks so good. Then there is a waiter or a waitress that will come to take your order and will explain the menu to you. If there are things that are unclear, that waiter waitress will clarify and ask you, "Do you have any questions?" After you've read it and after you've heard it explained, you then do not get up and leave because that's really not why you came. You didn't come to read about it only or to hear about it only. You came to experience a meal. And without the experience, you leave lacking. Something is missing because what you came for you didn't get.
God just doesn't want you to read his word. Nor does he want you only to hear it explained to you. He wants you to leave with an experience where you've experienced the reality of his word. And far too many people are satisfied reading a menu or hearing a proclamation when they don't have an experience. And so I thought I would spend my moments with you this morning telling you the three ingredients for experiencing the word of God so that it's not merely something read or heard but something transforming in your life, my life and our lives.
In James chapter 1 verse 19, James says this, "You know, my beloved brethren." So he's speaking to Christians, "my beloved brethren." He has just said in verse 18 that you were saved by the word of truth, by the word of God. So he starts by telling you, "My beloved brethren, the way you got saved and experienced forgiveness of sins and eternal life was by the word of truth."
I want to take a moment and explain why the word truth is so important. Because you can have facts but still not know the truth. Let's say I have a headache, and I need this headache resolved. It's a fact. I know if my head is hurting, I go to Walgreens or CVS pharmacy and then I get some Tylenol or Excedrin because I need this fact of my headache addressed, but it doesn't resolve my problem. So, I go to the doctor and tell him, "I've done the best I can, but my head is still hurting." He does a brain scan and discovers a tumor. When I went to Walgreens, I was speaking to a fact, but I didn't know the truth. And so, merely having the facts couldn't resolve my problem because I didn't get the root to change the fruit of my experience. And that's why you don't just need to know the facts, you need to know the truth.
And he says, "You've been born again," verse 18, "by the word of truth." And now he wants to tell you, now that you're my beloved brethren, having been born again, how you are to experience this in an ongoing way. The first thing he says if you're going to experience the reality of the word of God at work in you, through you, for you, and from you, is that you must resign yourself to the word. He says in verse 19, "Be quick to hear." Quick to hear what? Quick to hear God's point of view first. Let the first thing you go after is what does God say about this? What does God think about this? What does his word reveal about this? Don't go to God after TikTok. Don't go to God after Instagram. Don't go to God after Twitter. Don't go to God after chat rooms. He says, "Be quick to hear." In other words, run to God's perspective first.
There's something you need to know about God, and that is there's some things he cannot do. I know it's, it's popular to say God can do everything, but that's not true. There's some things he can't do. For example, the scripture says by two immutable things, it is impossible for God to lie. So, he can't lie. The Bible says he's the same yesterday, today, and forever. So, he can't change. Let me tell you something else God can't do. He can't be second. Whenever God is second, that means whatever is first is God. The Bible calls that idolatry. An idol is any noun, person, place, thing, or thought that you look to as your source. So when you're not quick to hear God's point of view, but you want to hear your posse's point of view, your relatives' point of view, your friend's point of view before God's point of view, that means he has been reduced at the starting gate. So be quick to hear God's perspective, the word of truth.
Then he says, "Be slow to speak your point of view." Don't say what you think before you say what God says. Because if you start with what God says, it may change what you have to say. Be quick to hear God's point of view. Be slow to communicate the human viewpoint, man's point of view. Because when the two conflict, God is right. The Bible says, "Let God be true and every man a liar." So whenever you or anybody else disagrees with God, God is not the person wrong. Be slow to speak. Many of us grew up in homes where our parents told you to be slow to speak. And the reason they said that is because, "I'm talking now. So you be quiet till you hear what I have to say. 'Cause when you hear what I have to say, you may not have to say anything at all. I may have totally canceled out." But what we wind up doing is canceling out the word of God with human viewpoint because the Bible says you can cancel its effect when you introduce human perspective that trumps him. So be quick to hear God's point of view. Resign yourself. I want to know what God says and how God thinks about whatever the matter is.
The second thing is be slow to speak the human point of view until you've heard God's point of view. Then the third thing he says is be slow to anger because once you hear God's point of view that contradicts your point of view, it might tick you off. Because God has been known to tick people off, to tell you stuff you don't want to hear, to tell you things you don't prefer to adjust to. Amen. And he says, "Be slow to anger. Don't get ticked off when you and God disagree." I remember my father whenever he ticked me off and I got a little attitude, he would say, "I'll give you something to cry about." In other words, I am not going to adjust to your tantrum. And that's why he says in verse 20, "The anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God." You getting mad is not going to make God change his mind, reverse his word, cancel his thoughts. So he says, you must be quick to hear what I have to say, slow about what you have to say, and don't get mad when we disagree, 'cause your anger is not going to change me. You must resign yourself, that is, if you want to experience the word, to the word and to the word as a first resort, not last resort. God's perspective first.
Then the second thing you must receive the word. Verse 21, "Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness in humility. Receive the word implanted which is able to save your soul." He says, "Receive the word implanted which is able to save your soul." On the day you were converted, your soul was not saved. I know that's how the lingo goes in Christianese, but on the moment you were saved, it was your spirit that was saved. Your spirit is saved immediately. Your soul is saved progressively. That's why he tells people, "my beloved brethren," people who are already saved, "your soul is saved."
You have three parts to you. 1 Thessalonians 5:23. You have body, soul, and spirit. Your body allows you to communicate with the physical world. Your soul allows you to communicate with yourself. The reason why you know you're here and seated in this seat is not because you have a body, but because you have a soul informing your body. That's why when a person dies and their soul leaves, the body can't do anything because there's nothing to inform it. So the life principle is the soul. The spirit allows you to communicate with God. So the body you can communicate with your environment through your five senses. Your soul lets you know that you're yourself. Your spirit allows you to communicate with God.
When you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal substitute, the Holy Spirit entered your human spirit and quickened you and made you alive spiritually. Your human spirit which has been now infused with the Holy Spirit resides inside your soul. It is the job of your human spirit now that it has been quickened by the Holy Spirit to give new information to your soul because everybody is born with a defective soul. That's why you don't have to teach your children how to lie or how to be selfish. Where did that come from? Came from you because we transferred to them a sin nature. And so the soul is damaged and based on what a person is informed with and how a person is influenced, some souls are more damaged than other souls. But all souls are damaged and need to be saved even though you've been born again. So the Holy Spirit that's now infused the human spirit, the human spirit is infused inside the soul to bring about the transformation called saving that is able to save your soul. Even though you're already saved in terms of your conversion, there needs to be a transformation that occurs. So he says, "In order for that to happen, you must remove all filthiness." Verse 21 says, "You must have a spiritual colonoscopy." Colonoscopies are nasty situations. I think you would call them filthy. Even getting ready for them is filthy. It is a nasty situation that is absolutely
necessary because the doctor cannot see the polyps or the cancer if there's filth in the colon. So there must be a cleansing prior to him putting the scope up there so that the correction can occur in the colon. Without the colonoscopy, there will be no correcting of the problem in the colon. Without the spiritual cleansing, the word can't work its way through. That's why the Bible says first John 1:9, if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
The biblical word for that is repentance. It is where as I'm coming to church, Lord, I want your word to work today. So, I want to identify all the things in my life that are dirty before holy God so that my soul has been cleansed so that the word can reach its destination. So, he says, "Receive the word in humility." And the reason why it must be in humility is because if you're too uppidity to confess where you're wrong, then you're too proud for God to help. So he says, removing the filthiness, receive the word implanted.
Notice that the word implant is not present tense. It's past tense. Implanted. It's already been planted. The Holy Spirit when you are converted enters your human spirit and it is planted inside your soul. The word of God is outside of you. It's it's in the book. It's in the Bible. That's outside of you. The word of God that's outside of you in the book, the Bible, has got to reach the spirit inside of you. When the word of God that's outside of you, you hear it being preached or taught gets to the spirit that's inside of you, the spirit inside of you, expands in your soul like blowing up a balloon. It expands in your soul so that the spirit begins to take over more control of your soul. If the word of God that's outside of you doesn't reach the implant that's inside of you, it will not get deep enough to bring about the change for you.
Until the sperm of a man reaches the egg of a woman, there will be no life. The egg is there prepared to receive it. But if the sperm does not get to it, it dies and the life that could have come can no longer come because it didn't get deep enough far enough. Receive. The Greek word receive means to welcome and embrace tightly. So don't just hear it, grab it. Receive it, embrace it. He says, "I want you to grab the word so that it reaches the destination."
Many Christians suffer from uh spiritual anorexia. An anorexic refuses to eat. Other Christians suffer from spiritual bulimia. A bulimic eats, but then they throw it back up. Whether you don't eat or whether you regurgitate it, it still means you didn't get the nutritional benefit. So, some Christians won't even listen to the word of God cuz they're anorexic. Other Christians are bimic. They'll hear it, but by the time they hit the parking lot, they throw it up. So the person who throws it up and came to church is no better than the person who never heard it, who didn't come to church cuz in both cases it never reached this destination.
Many people are like the way I chew chewing gum. I chew it for the flavor. That's all I want. I want the flavor. I'm going to chew it and chew it and chew it until all the flavors gone. Then I'mma spit it out cuz I I don't have use for it. Now, once I get the juice, I'm done. A lot of folk come to hear the word of God for the juice. They want the choir to give them some juice. They want the preacher to give them some juice. But after the juice is over, they go. They're through with it until they pick up another stick of church next week and chew on it some more, which means it's not reached its destination.
He says, "Receive the word that's implanted." So, the spirit, human spirit that's been now infused by the Holy Spirit is hungry. It wants to be fed. It is waiting to receive the word outside of you to reach the spirit that's been implanted inside of you so that the spirit can expand in the soul to bring about the change that's needed for the life. And that he says is absolutely necessary if you want your soul to be saved. Meaning, if you want your life to be changed, if you want victory, if you want deliverance, if you want to overcome, he says, if you want to be saved, because he's already talking to people who've been converted, my beloved brethren, if you want to see God work, the word outside of you has to reach the implant inside of you.
So, first of all, you know, if if I know many of you after church are going to go out and you're going to find a place to eat for your Sunday meal, but that's not going to be your only meal for the week. That's just starting your week off. But if if nothing else is done, you're going to starve. Because God is not interested in you coming to an event. He's interested in the event coming inside of you and me and us. So you must receive the word, but you must first resign yourself to the word because the Bible is not simply words about God. It is the voice of God in print that the Holy Spirit uses to feed the spirit to expand the soul because once the soul expands, it changes what you do with your body.
See, a lot of people want to change their body when they got a jacked up soul. And if the soul is not changed, well, well, here's what happens. You you wind up wearing spiritual Spanx. You know, Spanx make you look thinner than you really are. Spanx can trick you. It can it can make you look like you're slim, look like you're put together, look like you're tight, but the moment you take them off, reality shows up. See, church can make you look like you're spiritual. Having a Bible can make you look like you're committed. Waving your hand in the air like you just don't care makes you look like you're a praise person. But when the spiritual Spanx come off, it's clear all that was was show.
But he says if you receive the word and it gets to the implant, it is able to bring about rescue. The word save means to be rescued or delivered. Even though you're already see when you accept Christ, you were delivered in eternity, but when you receive the word and plant it, you deliver delivered in history. When you accepted Christ, that gave you heaven. When you receive the word and plant it, heaven gives you help. So it is getting the word to work.
So, you must first of all resign yourself. I need to know what God says first. Then I want to grab what God says. I'm not going to just hear what he says. I'm going to grab it and I'm going to welcome it. You know, a lot of us uh have welcome signs, mats at the front door, which usually is a lie. [Applause] It's a lie. It's a lie. It's a lie, but it's polite. It's a polite lie. Welcome. The lie is expanded on when the person comes in the house. Cuz then we'll say, "Make yourself at home." That's lie number two. Cuz what we really mean is you you ain't going all over my house now. You make yourself at room. This room, the living room, the kitchen, and the bathroom. You ain't going in my bedroom and my closets in my attic in my garage. You ain't You ain't doing all that, man. Don't take me literal. Make yourself at home. You ain't that welcome.
But what he wants you to do is embrace it. He wants you to say, "Okay, God. Uh, I hear what you say. I I I don't I I I don't like it. I don't even want it, but I'm going to grab it anyway. I'm going to embrace it cuz it's the word of truth." So, you start off resigning, then you receive, and then you respond. Look at what he says. But prove yourself, verse 22, doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror, and once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.
Once you resign yourself to it, this is what God says. Once you embrace it, I'm going to accept it even if I don't want it. Now, there must be an action associated with it. A doing. He says, what am I going to do in light of what I just accepted, whether or not I liked it? What action am I going to take in obedience to what God has said to activate the word reaching the destination of the implant. The word will lay dormant until there is a corresponding action. It's there.
You know, back in the day, like many of you, I wore a Jerry curl. A Jerry curl. You know, back in the day, getting a Jerry curl was no joke. I mean, they put these chemicals in your hair. They roll your hair, put you under the dryer cuz you want that shiny, slick look. Jerry curl. The problem with the Jerry curl is it dried up. Your hair would get dry. So if you got a Jerry curl, you bought curl activator. You had a Jerry curl, you done gone and got some curl activator cuz your curl would dry up. Now the chemicals were still in your hair. It was just dried up. But once you do, bam, things became alive again because an activation occurred. The word of God is the word of God. Even if it's not activated, but once you activate it, bam, God begins to do the work with the work in the soul by the spirit. And so he says you must be a doer. There must be an action taken. Once the action is taken, the activation occurs. If there is no action, there is no activation. That's why he says be a doer, not just somebody who heard it, a hearer of the word.
And then he gives you an illustration. He says, ' Don't be like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and quickly turns away and forgets the kind of person he was. Now in the Greek text, the word man is the word male. There are a number of Greek words for man. One of the most noted one is pronounced anthropos and that means mankind. So that's male and female human race. So that's one use of man. But that's not the Greek word used here. The Greek word used here is the word for man as a male as opposed to a female. He says, "Don't be like a male, a man who looks at his face in a mirror and quickly turns away." Why does he say that? Because women don't look at a mirror and quickly turn away. Women meander in a mirror. They hang out in a mirror. Okay. Men go to the bathroom mirror, get the washcloth, get the soap. [Music] Bye. Not women. No. No. First of all, they go to mirror number one. That's the bathroom mirror. They see how messed up they got last night and the hair all over the place and all that. Okay, that's mirror number one. Mirror number one shows them the problem. Then they go to mirror number two, aptly called the vanity mirror, cuz there's a lot of vanity that's taking place in front of that mirror. So, she's fixing her hair and getting the makeup on and putting her lipstick on at mirror number two. She even got a chair in front of mirror number two, which front so she can sit down and take her time. Then she goes to mirror two and a half. This is the hand mirror. She turns around to see what's back there in that mirror. This this mirror this mirror mirror number two and a half. [Applause] Then she goes to mirror number three. That's the full length mirror. That's [Applause] then she goes to the car and pulls down the visor to see the next mirror. [Applause] She's trying to figure out what went wrong between the house and the car. [Applause] [Applause] Then she got a compact and a purse so she can look in the mirror all day long. dust all day long. [Applause]
He says, "If you want the word to work, don't be like a don't be like a man who just glances and turns." No. See, here's the deal. You got some married sisters. You got a miss. Was that your husband? Cuz he got married. Okay. So, in biblical days, they did not have glass mirrors. They hadn't been invented yet. Glass mirror is glass with silver in it. So, that's where you get the reflection. Okay? That didn't exist in biblical days. Mirrors were brass. Brass. So the only way they could see themselves clearly with brass is they had to hold the brass up against some form of light like a candle or they would hold it up during the daytime by the sun and they would manipulate it until they could see their face clearly in it because they didn't have this where you walk up and look in the mirror like we do. They had to work it until the light hit it just right so they could get a reflection of their face in the mirror.
He says if you want the word to work, he says you must look at yourself verse 23 intently, manipulate it until you see yourself in it. In other words, until you see the word of God speaking to you, relating to you, dealing with you. In other words, manipulate the word until the Holy Spirit lifts it off the page and says, "I'm talking to you. I'm not just talking to y'all. I'm talking to you." He says, "But to do that, you've got to work with the word and not just, oh, read a verse, run, but manipulate whatever that issue is you're dealing with with the word until he shows you you, till you see your face in the mirror because God wants you to deal with your reality and my reality and all of the reality is not good."
So that's why he calls it the law of liberty. In verse 25, he says, "Look intently into the perfect law of liberty." Now, he's still talking about the word of God, but now he gives it a different name. He calls it the law of liberty. Meaning to be liberated means to be released from something. Something that is holding you hostage. Something that won't let you go. Something that you're paying a psychiatrist $300 an hour for them to tell you why you need to come back next week. He says this law is so powerful that if it reaches its destination, it liberates. He whom the son sets free is free indeed because Jesus is now personally involved because Jesus's word has reached the destination. So now Jesus the liberator can do liberating to those who need to be liberated. Set free from addiction. Set free from a habit. Set free from a vice. Set free from an attitude. Set free from a relationship, you need to be set free. He calls it the law that liberates.
But because we have such a weak view of the word, we want to hear it preached and then we want to spit it out rather than letting it go to its destination. Rather than taking the pastor's Sunday sermon and say, "No, I'm not going to just wait for next week for a new sermon." No, what I'm going to do is I'm going to meditate on that word. I'mma think about that word till that word gets down so that the Holy Spirit can grab it.
You ever you ever you ever go to a vending machine and you know you want to buy Coke or candy or chips and you put the dollar bill in there and it goes it kicks it back out it kicks it back out. Usually that means it's all wrinkled up. It's all wrinkled up and so it can't it can't smoothly take it in. Now it goes in for a while but it won't stay there. It just comes right back out. You know what that means? You're not getting no chips. You're not getting a candy bar. And you're not getting a soda because the machine didn't receive it. The receiving machine didn't take it all the way in. And because it didn't take it all the way in, it doesn't deliver what you're looking for. You can be in church but not be delivered what you're looking for cuz you didn't take it all the way in. So that the law of liberty didn't do its job.
And so he says, "Receive the word, abide in it." That means to hang out, not being a forgetful hearer, but an effectual doer. You keep doing whatever the word is calling you to do because it drives it down to the implant, and that man will be blessed in whatever he does. Turn the word into a crockpot, not a microwave. See, what we want is we want microwave transformation. Put it in there, push 30 seconds, and let me be hot. God says, "You better let that thing simmer and slow cook so that it's not hot for 5 seconds, but it's it's permeated the whole. It's not just hot for a minute. You put something in the microwave, soon as you take that out, 5 seconds later, it's cold again." You know why? Cuz it only touched the top. It didn't get all in there. A crockpot lets it simmer and work its way in there until it can produce the liberation that you're looking for. And so he says, he says, "And that man will be blessed in whatever he does."
You know, uh, we all grew up with Soul Train. It was the hippest trip in America. As it rolled across the tracks of your mind. And when when Soul Train came on every week, they had the scramble board. This young man or young lady, they were at the scramble. They they had to get the word right. It was a song, a singer, or a group, and they had to get the word right so that so that they could dance again. But they couldn't dance till they got the word right. It was all scrambled up, but they worked with it and they worked with it and they worked with it until they got the word right. And when they got the word right, they went back to dancing again. They went back to dancing again.
See, what God is saying is, I need you to get the word right. And if you ever get the word right, you spend the time to work with the word and you get the word right, then you can you can you can you can answer the question, you know, where those fans at? Where those fans at? You can you can you can work it now because you can go back and dance again because you'll see that God is working when you get the word right. So get the word right, resign yourself to it, embrace it, act on it, and then watch the liberation of the saving of the soul occur. [Music] [Music] Some of them young people don't know what Soul Train is. Y'all missed it cuz at the 8:00 service, Dr. Evans said, "Where them fans at?" Pop. Let's thank the Lord for the tremendous message. Phenomenal work. [Applause]

Right now is the perfect time for you to say yes to the Lord Jesus. It is the right time and the perfect time. Or maybe you're backsliding and you need to rededicate yourself to the Lord. He always starts with it, but he had like five million in the midst of it. And and I love it. I think it just gave us more to be able to lean back and be like, "Oh, that's how you activate God's word. Oh, I got to respond because I had to receive it." Because, you know, like I I feel like, man, I love when he comes. He just makes you want to just be like, "Tell me how you got this from here." But I like figuring out how people think, right? And so, okay. So listen now. It makes me wonder cuz he dropped this nugget. This it was we were talking back back in the office and it was like a Brinks truck, right? This spiritual tantrum. My God. Listen. How what we hear and what we think don't match. Right. Right. But we we have to slow down. He said something. He said um there are certain things God cannot do, right? And if you jump too quick, you would miss what he was saying, right? Because it there is a reality and he mentioned it. God cannot lie. You know, God cannot change. And and so we we we have to I think we have to be mindful of our relationship both with God and with the word. Yeah. Because we'll believe in God, but we don't read his word and or receive his word. We'll read it. We don't always receive it. And I think, you know, we just I don't know. It's a lot. It's a lot. I got a lot of thoughts, obviously. Um, family, tell us what you thought.
