Now, I have a question for you. Do you need a job? Because what if I said that you could work for a company that keeps the lights on across the greater Houston area. Yeah, this company is called Resilient Structures and right now it's looking for hundreds of workers.
I went to the company's facility over in Humble to learn how these jobs, maybe your next job, could also help strengthen the power grid. These aren't just utility poles, they're fiberglass composite poles. Built to withstand winds topping 140 mph, the strength of a category 4 hurricane. For reference, Hurricane Barrel, which knocked out power to millions across the greater Houston area in 2024, made landfall in Texas as a category 1.
"I was here. Um, I was fortunate that I only lost power for 12 hours. Um, but I did have family members who lost power for 10 days."
The storm exposed a major weakness in the power grid. Part of the damage was caused by downed utility poles, the structures that carry power lines across entire communities. And since then, CenterPoint Energy has been replacing thousands of wooden poles with stronger fiberglass ones. And many of them are being made right here in Humble.
"This is the production floor where workers create and then build the poles. There are about a dozen workers on the floor right now. It's just a little bit noisy, but Resilient Structures says that as it continues to ramp up production, it will get a lot noisier here."
"So, tell me about these jobs. Uh, how many people are you hiring right now?"
"We're hiring we've hired over 100. We'll be hiring um, at full scale we'll probably be over 300 people. So, we still have hundreds more jobs that we'll be um, hiring here for our Houston facility."
"And for what kinds of positions?"
"Equipment operators, there's some technical skilled work in our filament winding, which is unique to our composite poles. So, they're great full-time career opportunities with quite a bit of a runway as we continue to build and grow in support of the utility industry."
That's music to Alisa Madrid's ears. She's been working at Resilient Structures for a few months and says it feels good to be part of something that could help keep the lights on for other families during future storms.
"I think that's what makes Resilient Structures so special is that you don't I'm able to see the direct impact now um and I'm reminded of that daily."
