After 5000 Hours of Mind Mapping, Here's What I've Learned...

I've made over 300 mind maps. Here's one of my first, equivalent to about half a page of linear notes, and here's a more recent one from my master's program—almost 100 pages of notes! In this video, I'll share four secrets to effective mind mapping I discovered over a decade ago. Stick around to learn how to integrate the Feynman technique for powerful learning.

Secret number one: Turn your mind maps into a mind mirror. When I started, I treated mind mapping like note-taking. I read or listened, then tried to put it on the map, simplifying, paraphrasing, and abbreviating. I added lines and arrows, thinking that was it. It was easy, but useless. I stopped for years.

Then, in medical school, a friend was mind mapping effectively. I was falling asleep in lectures, so I tried it. I was heavily into flashcards and felt trapped in a cycle. So, no more lecture slides, Evernote, or typing—just me, my brain, the lecture, and blank paper. It felt like my tools were stripped away. This helped. I had to cut down to keywords, focusing on what was worth writing efficiently. I realized how powerful simple arrows are and how many words weren't helping my learning. Fewer words meant less for my brain to process, allowing more time to think about ideas and their connections. Initially harder, it became much easier than my old technique. I left lectures understanding more, with more questions and a clearer direction for studying. Before, I'd leave overwhelmed and tired, even after sleeping through parts of the lecture.

How does this relate to a mind mirror? Because I focused on writing things meaningfully, my notes reflected my mind more closely. I could visually see knowledge gaps and struggles. A messy map meant a messy brain. For example, this early map shows messy sections. While the ideas were connected, explaining them would overwhelm me. But this cleaner, more organized section was easier to discuss; I could answer questions from any angle. As I cleaned up messy parts, I felt more confident in exams, even with curveball questions. Initially, I aimed for perfect maps, avoiding messy parts and omitting information. The secret: Don't avoid the mess. Put it down; use the map as a mirror. Add connections and arrows. Let it be messy. Then, see the gaps and clean it up. Disorganized sections, messy arrows, or gaps highlight areas needing work. Visualizing this makes it easier than repeatedly reviewing or using practice questions.

Secret number two: Never get it right on the first try. My perfectionism made me want perfect maps. This is incredibly hard; perhaps impossible. There are too many concepts, keywords, and relationships to process perfectly first time. It's much more efficient to put down ideas as hypotheses and build on them. Add words and lines, refine, and revisit. Use mind mapping as a cognitive offload. Consider everything wrong on the first go—a whiteboard or scratchpad. After several iterations, you'll have something accurate, good, and organized. You'll be more engaged, aware of gaps earlier, with deeper memory and understanding. You'll gain more robust knowledge for the same study time.

Initially, I tried to get it right the first time, thinking this would train my brain. While my first attempts are better now, it's still impossible to get it right on the first try. Secret number three: Never start organizing ideas the same way they're presented. Framing bias influences how we judge information based on presentation. In medicine, a junior doctor might describe heartburn symptoms, but it could be a heart attack. Similarly, lectures and textbooks have organizational hierarchies that bias our thinking. The way something makes sense to *you* isn't always how it's presented. An expert might explain something poorly, while a friend makes it click. Two books on the same topic might be presented differently, and one might be more intuitive for you.

It's not about testing. Learning something in one framework doesn't mean it's how you need to apply it. If it makes sense to your brain, it's easier to encode and remember. Then, you can manipulate that knowledge freely. Trying to force understanding for the sake of testing is less effective. Learn it the way your brain prefers, then adapt it. Sometimes, you find a framework that works both ways. In the emergency department, a senior taught me about shock. My textbook approach was slow. He showed a simpler framework, making it much easier to understand and recall. My retention was better; it felt intuitive. It was the same information, just filed differently.

If we assume the presented way is the only way, we limit ourselves. People think, "It's logical; I just need to memorize it." If you need to memorize, it's not intuitive. There might be a different, equally logical but more intuitive way. Look for it. For most topics, there's a better way to package the information.

Here are a few examples. History is often presented as "before, during, after," but "drivers, mechanisms, consequences" might be more intuitive. In medicine or dentistry, "history, examination, investigation, management" is common, but it's unhelpful when every disease is categorized the same way. "Mechanisms, severity, management" might be better. There are many ways to package information. High-level learners find intuitive ways to organize. You can organize information as taught, but it should be a deliberate conclusion after considering alternatives. If you can't think of other ways, think more. There's always another way.

Secret number four: Integrate the Feynman technique. Explain it to a ten-year-old. This complements mind mapping because new terminology can overload the brain. Terminology is like vanilla extract—potent. A word represents complex ideas. Using non-technical words helps deepen understanding by creating mini-analogies and speeding up review. For example, instead of "anaphase," use "pulling apart"—and keep the term in brackets. This is secret number four because it's impossible without secrets one, two, and three.
