Full Halo CME | Eruption Analysis

Hey folks, my heart started racing a bit here today when I peaked in on the Soho Corona graphs and saw this full Halo ejection. It's one of the key signatures of a solar eruption that's heading directly at the Earth.

So I immediately went over to the Solar Dynamics Observatory to see absolutely nothing. There were no flares or eruptions near Center disc during the time frame when the eruption occurred. There was a minor filament release on the north, but this was not the source of the full halo coronograph images. It's not big enough and it's directed fully northward.

And for folks getting to space weather data, here's one of the more annoying aspects of the analysis. A full Halo CME either means it is heading directly at Earth, or it erupted on the exact opposite side of the Sun and is heading directly away from the earth. That is the case here, and the endless spiral confirms the CME heading out the other way, completely in the opposite direction of Earth.

It's an excellent learning moment for those who are new to this concept. Full Halo CMEs are always worth checking, but in this case, it is the lesser dangerous of the two possibilities. This CME will miss.
