The 1988 Book That Turned Magick Into Physics

There is a kind of drawing physicists make to describe what cannot otherwise be drawn. Two arrows, a vertex, a wavy line. The arrows are electrons. The wavy line is a photon. The vertex is the moment one becomes the other. Or more precisely, the moment one passes a force to the other. The drawing is read like an equation. Every line corresponds to a particle. Every vertex corresponds to a mathematical term. Together, they describe with eerie precision how the universe negotiates between its parts.

The diagrams are called Feynman diagrams, after the man who invented them. Without them, modern physics cannot speak. With them, it can describe what happens between two electrons at the instant they decide to repel each other. An event that before Feynman, no one knew how to describe at all.

In February of 1988, a man named Stephen Mace published a book with a Feynman diagram on the cover. The diagram was not chosen for ornament. The book's central argument was that the same lines and vertices physicists use to describe two electrons exchanging force describe with the same accuracy what happens when a sorcerer casts a spell. The book was titled Sorcery as Virtual Mechanics. It argued and tried to prove that magic has a mechanism, that the mechanism is identical to the one that mediates every electromagnetic interaction in the universe, and that this mechanism can be operated by anyone willing to learn the protocol.

On the day Mace placed copies of the book on a shelf in a New Haven bookstore, Richard Feynman died. Mace did not know. He learned of it from an obituary 2 days later. The author of a book whose central diagram came from Feynman, publishing on the day Feynman died, without any chain of cause that connects the two events. The proof for the book's thesis had already happened before anyone read the first page.

What follows is the framework that book laid out. Not metaphor, mechanism. Not ritual, protocol. Not faith, testable structure. There are three fields to walk through. Quantum electrodynamics, the synchronicities Carl Jung spent 40 years documenting without knowing why they happened, and the chaos magic of an English artist named Austin Osman Spare, who built a working method a full century before the framework that would explain why it worked.

Here is the problem with every magical tradition that has ever existed. Each one has rituals. Each one has results or claims results. None has a mechanism. A spell is performed. An outcome arrives, sometimes. Between the two, there is a space that no system has ever described in operational terms. Some traditions fill that space with a god. Others fill it with a spirit, an angel, a demon, a force. But naming the agent is not explaining the mechanism. If a spirit caused the outcome, then how does the spirit cause anything? The question only steps back one level. The black box remains a black box, just with a new label.

This is the wall every serious magician eventually hits. Crowley hit it. The Golden Dawn hit it. The medieval grimoires hit it. They left behind enormous quantities of ritual, careful records of result, beautiful systems of correspondence, and no explanation for how any of it actually transmits force across the space between intention and event. Mace looked at that wall and decided not to add another layer of mythology to it. He looked instead at the only field that had ever described force transfer at the most fundamental level, physics, and asked whether the mechanism there might also be the mechanism here. What he found was that physics had been describing the mechanism of magic in technical language for 40 years. No one had noticed because no one had thought to look. Physicists do not read books on sorcery. Sorcerers do not read papers on quantum electrodynamics. The two fields had spent a generation describing the same phenomenon and not speaking to each other.

Consider what happens when two electrons meet. They come close enough that their charges interact. They repel each other. This is the simplest possible event in electromagnetism, and yet the mechanism of it is not obvious. Charge is a property. Repulsion is an event. How does a property cause an event? How does one electron know the other is there? How does the force actually pass between them?

The answer that quantum electrodynamics offers is strange, and when first proposed, it was met with serious resistance. The two electrons, the theory says, exchange a particle. One emits it, the other absorbs it. The momentum carried by the particle pushes them apart. This particle is called a virtual photon. The word virtual is the key. The photon does not exist in any way an outside observer could detect. It cannot be measured. It cannot be photographed. It is not part of the universe in the ordinary sense. It is part only of the interaction that gives rise to it. The reaction contains it entirely. When the reaction completes, the photon is gone, leaving no trace except the change in the electron's direction. And yet, without it, no electromagnetic force is ever transmitted. Every push, every pull, every interaction between charged particles in the universe, and that includes nearly every interaction that happens in matter at all, operates through this exchange. The visible world rests on a layer of unseeable events. Virtual photons mediate the structure of atoms, of molecules, of cells, of everything one has ever touched.

Hold this for a moment. The mechanism that builds the visible world is invisible. The mechanism that transmits force between two simple particles is itself not a particle in the ordinary sense. It appears from nothing. It does its work. It disappears. Where does it come from? This is the part that matters. The two electrons cannot adjust their own charge. Their charge is fixed. 1.602 * 10 to the negative 19 coulombs forever in every electron [clears throat] in the universe. They cannot, by changing their own nature, resolve the tension between them. Something must resolve it, and that something cannot come from inside them, because their interiors are not the kind of thing that can change. So, the resolution comes from outside. The vacuum itself spawns the photon. The inability of the electrons to self-adjust creates a stress. The stress, having nowhere to go inside the interacting particles, opens a door in the surrounding emptiness. Through that door, something appears that did not exist a moment before, transfers the necessary momentum, and vanishes again.

This is the pattern Mayce built his framework around. Tension between two entities, inability of those entities to resolve the tension internally, spontaneous creation from no apparent source, of an entity that mediates the resolution, disappearance of that entity once the work is done, stress, inability to adjust, creation from emptiness, resolution.

The pattern will appear next in a place no physicist would have expected to find it. It will appear in a therapist's office between Carl Jung and a patient he could not reach. The patient was a woman of remarkable intelligence and even more remarkable defensiveness. She had built around her interior life a kind of armor made of impeccable reasoning. Every move Jung made toward her emotional center was deflected, often elegantly, sometimes ruthlessly. She knew everything that could be known about her own condition, and her knowing was itself the obstacle. She could describe her feelings in such precise abstract language that she never had to actually feel them. The therapy was, by Jung's own account, going nowhere.

Jung did the thing experienced practitioners eventually learn to do when force will not work. He stopped pushing. He let the sessions drift. He waited for something with enough weight to break through, knowing he could not generate that weight himself. In one session, the patient began to describe a dream. Someone in the dream, she said, had given her a golden scarab, an expensive piece of jewelry, ornate, >> [music] >> antique. She was still speaking when Jung heard a small tapping at the window behind him. He turned. A beetle was striking the glass repeatedly, trying to get in. He opened the window and let it in. It was a scarabaeid, a rose chafer, a member of the same family as the Egyptian scarab. Its carapace was iridescent gold-green. He cupped it in his hand. He turned to the patient and held it out. "Here is your scarab," he said. The session and the therapy broke open at that moment. Years of armored rationalism dissolved in a way no argument had managed. The patient could no longer deflect what had happened because there was nothing to deflect. There had been no argument. There had been only the impossible coincidence of a real beetle, of the right species, at the right window, at the right moment, in a sentence about that exact beetle in a dream. Jung did not arrange it. He could not have. No causal chain connects a beetle's flight pattern to a description of a dream. A materialist would shrug, call it chance, and move on. Jung did not shrug. He gave the phenomenon a name, synchronicity, and he spent the rest of his life trying to describe what kind of event it actually was. He never quite managed it.

Now look at what happened in that room through the lens Mace would later supply. Two entities, Jung and the patient, [music] bound in a therapeutic interaction. Attention between them building and unable to discharge. The patient could not change the architecture of her defenses by an act of will. Her rational armor was deeper than her decision-making. Jung could not penetrate that armor by direct force. Every move he made was already accounted for by her reasoning. Both parties were in their own way charged particles unable to resolve the field they had created together. The tension accumulated. And then, from outside the interaction entirely, an event appeared that no one had caused. A beetle at the window. Created, as far as any analysis can determine, from nothing. The event passed through the room once, did its work, and left no trace except the change in the relationship between Jung and his patient. The virtual photon, the framework would say, had fired.

There is a second case that follows the same pattern with even more force. And for our purposes, the case is more useful because it involves a physicist. Wolfgang Pauli was one of the most rigorous theoretical minds of the 20th century. He won the Nobel Prize in physics in 1945. He was responsible for the principle of quantum mechanics that bears his name. He was, by every measure physicists use, a serious man. And yet, the laboratories he visited had a tendency to break. This happened often enough that it became a kind of inside joke among Pauli's colleagues. Instruments that had worked all day would fail when he entered the room. Glass would crack. Apparatus would slip from supports and shatter. The phenomenon was so consistent that physicists in Zurich and Hamburg began to speak openly of the Pauli effect, the apparent ability of his mere presence to cause technical disaster. One famous account holds that a major equipment failure at a Göttingen Institute, originally blamed on Pauli's anticipated visit, turned out to have occurred at the moment his train was passing through the local station without his ever stepping off. Pauli, to his great credit, did not dismiss this. He took it seriously. He thought about it. He talked about it with Carl Jung. The two became close friends and correspondents and helped Jung develop the framework that would eventually become the essay on synchronicity.

Here was a man who understood, at the deepest possible level, the mathematics of how the visible world is built, who knew the physics of virtual photons better than nearly anyone alive, who could derive, from first principles, why two electrons repel each other, and who could not explain why glass shattered when he walked into rooms. He never got to read Macy's book. He died in 1958, 30 years before Sorcery as Virtual Mechanics was published, but the framework applied to his case fits precisely. Two charged entities, Pauli's intense theoretical clarity, and the laboratory equipment around him, instruments whose function depended on a stability he himself, by his very presence, seemed to disturb. A tension neither could resolve internally. Equipment cannot adjust to be invulnerable to a passing physicist. A physicist cannot suspend his own existence to pass safely through a lab. So, the tension found its own outlet. A capacitor blew. A photographic plate fogged. A vacuum tube failed. The interaction discharged its momentum, and Pauli passed on.

So, here is what the framework has so far. Two electrons in a beam repelling each other through a particle that does not exist. A beetle striking the window of a Zurich consulting room at the moment of a dream. A capacitor failing as a Nobel laureate steps off a train. Three different orders of phenomenon, each described in its own technical language, each unconnected to the others by any chain of cause. And yet the same skeleton lies underneath each of them. A pair of entities in tension. An impossibility of internal resolution. A spontaneous event from outside the system. A change in trajectory.

What Mayes proposed, and this is the leap that earned the book its reputation, is that this skeleton is not a metaphor that links the three. The skeleton is the actual mechanism. The same dynamic that spawns photons from the vacuum to mediate electromagnetic force is also what spawns beetles at windows and cracks in laboratory glass. The vacuum, in this view, is not just the source of virtual particles. It is the source of every event that resolves a tension which the participants in the tension cannot resolve themselves.

If this is true, then magic is not what magicians thought it was. Magic is not the imposition of will on reality. Magic is the deliberate construction of tensions that the vacuum will resolve in a predetermined direction. This is the proposition. The rest of the framework is the protocol for doing it.

The protocol was constructed, in essence, almost a century before Mace named the mechanism that made it work. His name was Austin Osman Spare. He was born in London in 1886 and died in 1956. Too early to read about virtual photons in any popular form. Too early to encounter quantum electrodynamics outside the most technical journals. He was, professionally, an artist. Privately and obsessively, a sorcerer. He drew strange portraits, exhibited at the Royal Academy as a young man, and spent most of his adult life in poverty, producing thousands of drawings that almost no one bought.

Spare had a brief involvement with the most famous magician of his era, Aleister Crowley, who tried to fold him into the Golden Dawn tradition. The relationship did not last. Crowley wanted obedience and the use of inherited symbols. Spare wanted neither. He left and constructed a method that contradicted Crowley's at the deepest possible level.

Spare's first claim was that no magician could safely use someone else's symbols. The symbols Crowley used, the cabalistic associations, the angelic names, the elaborate Hebrew letter correspondences, had been built by a particular culture for a particular psyche, and they would not transmit cleanly into another mind. Every practitioner, in Spare's view, had to construct his own symbolic vocabulary from nothing. Borrow nothing. Inherit nothing. Build it yourself in private, and use it only with yourself.

The second claim was deeper. Spare had noticed something about belief. He understood that what shapes a person's life is not their stated opinions, but their unconscious presumptions. The assumptions installed by upbringing and culture so early >> [music] >> that they feel like reality itself rather than belief. A man might claim to want wealth and yet [music] act in every meaningful way like a person who believes wealth is shameful. [music] The stated belief is a surface. The operating belief, the one that actually runs his actions, is somewhere beneath. Spare proposed that the surface of belief is irrelevant to magic. What matters is the operating layer. And the operating layer cannot be changed by ordinary effort. One cannot decide to believe something deeply by deciding to. The decision, being conscious, lives in the surface. The belief one wants to change lives below it. They never meet. This is why most attempts at wild magic fail. The magician makes a conscious decision. The conscious decision conflicts with the operating belief. The two cancel out. Nothing happens.

Spare's method was designed to circumvent this entirely. The technique he became known for is called a sigil. It is a simple procedure that does something not at all simple. You begin by writing the desire as a sentence in the most direct terms possible. I will have the strength to finish the work. A will appear before the end of summer. The grammar matters less than the clarity. Then you strike out every letter that appears more than once. What remains is a small set of unique letters, usually six or seven. Then you draw those letters together, >> [music] >> combining them, overlapping them, distorting them, until they fuse into a single small abstract symbol. The symbol should look like nothing in particular. It should not resemble any object. It should not, >> [music] >> when looked at later, suggest what it was made from. If you can glance at the symbol and read your wish back from it, the symbol has failed. Its job is to be unreadable.

This is the sigil. The purpose of the unreadability is precise. The sigil has to carry the intention past the conscious mind. If the conscious mind sees the intention written plainly, it generates automatically and without permission the opposite intention. Every desire produces a counter desire as a kind of reflexive antibody. You want money. The conscious mind quietly produces the suspicion that you do not deserve money, or that wanting it is shameful, or that you will fail at obtaining it. These counter thoughts cancel the original charge. Spare called this the dual principle, the tendency of every pole to generate its opposite. The sigil bypasses the counter. Because the symbol is unreadable, the conscious mind cannot generate an objection to something it cannot identify. The intention slips through untouched into the deeper layer where actual operating belief lives. Then the sigil is forgotten. Not metaphorically forgotten, actually forgotten. Memorized for an hour or two, then deliberately ignored. The practitioner is forbidden for a period of days or weeks from thinking about either the symbol or what the symbol meant. Every conscious thought about the desire bleeds energy from the working. It is the equivalent, Spare wrote, of opening the oven door while the bread is rising.

This is the first half of the protocol, containment. The second half is fuel. Spare's term for the fuel was free belief. The phrase is awkward, but precise. The energy that powers a sigil is the emotional charge that ordinarily holds together one of your beliefs. To free that energy, you have to take a belief apart. Spare's technique for taking a belief apart is called the neither-neither. It is the closest thing in the history [music] of practical magic to a particle accelerator. You begin with a belief you hold strongly. Not a superficial opinion, a real one. A belief about yourself, your body, your worth, your situation. You bring it fully to mind with all its emotional weight intact. Then you find its true opposite. Not a weak counter-argument that does not threaten the original. A real opposite with equal weight. If you believe you deserve a good life, find the part of you that suspects you do not. If you believe you are talented, find the part that suspects you are not. The opposite must be authentic, the kind that one has actually felt at some point. A theoretical opposite will not work. Then you hold them simultaneously. Both at once. The full weight of the belief and the full weight of its opposite pressing against each other in the same mental space. The belief, Spare claimed, will not survive this. Beliefs hold their structure by suppressing their opposites. When the opposite is brought forward with equal force, the structure dissolves. What remains is the emotional charge that was holding the belief together. A quantity of psychic energy now uncontained with nowhere to go. This is free belief.

This is the same energy, in Spare's framework, that physicists later identified in a particle accelerator. When matter and antimatter collide, both annihilate. The mass that was locked into their forms is released as pure energy. That energy, set free, then reactualizes whichever virtual forms are available. New particles emerge from the wreckage, spawned by the same vacuum that spawned the original photon between the two electrons. In the accelerator, the new particles are determined by which virtual forms have enough strength to absorb the released energy. In the magician's working, the new event is determined by which form has been prepared to absorb it. The sigil is the form. The neither neither is the energy. The unconscious is the vacuum.

What the protocol does, in summary, is replicate at the scale of human life the exact dynamic that produces particles from annihilation in a laboratory. The particle being produced is a virtual event in your life. A meeting, an opportunity, a coincidence, an opening. The form of the event has been specified in advance by the sigil. The energy that fills the form has been freed from a belief that no longer holds. This is, mechanically speaking, conjuration.

There is one law operating across the entire framework, and Spare made it the cornerstone of everything else. For every force, an opposite force. For every particle, an antiparticle. For every belief, a buried opposite. For every action in the world, a reaction equal to it in magnitude and inverse in direction. This is not a moral principle. It is a mechanical one. It applies whether anyone acknowledges it or not, the way the conservation of momentum applies whether one knows what momentum is.

For the magician, the dual principle has direct and unforgiving consequences. The cleanest workings are those that have the dualities built into them from the beginning. The most catastrophic workings are those that try to extract one pole of a duality while suppressing the other. A magician who tries to get something for nothing, wealth without offering any value, love without offering any presence, success without offering any work, is producing one pole of a duality. The other pole arrives eventually in the form he did not want. The wealth that arrives is from a death in the family. The love that arrives is desperate and corrosive. The success arrives in a field that requires what he has refused to develop. A magician who targets a specific person, "I want this exact human in my life." is locking the working to a single pole. The opposite pole arrives in some form attached to the same person. The relationship begins, then fractures, then mutates into what was suppressed. A magician who sends destruction against an enemy is supplying the enemy with energy. The energy goes through, takes its form, and returns by the most direct route, which is back to the sender. The dual principle does not distinguish between offense and defense. It only conserves.

The corrective Mace draws out of Spare's work is small but absolute. Do not force outcomes. Define forms. Build the necessary opposites into the design from the beginning, so the conservation operates inside the working rather than against it. The elegant spell is not the one with the most power behind it. It is the one with the cleanest symmetry.

Spare finished writing Sorcery as Virtual Mechanics in late 1987. He arranged for five copies to be carried at a small bookstore in New Haven, where he had a contact who agreed to take them. He drove there himself on the 15th of February, 1988, and placed the books on the shelf personally. He did not know that Richard Feynman, the man whose diagrams had given him the visual vocabulary of his entire argument was in his final hours that day. Feynman died in Los Angeles of complications following a second surgery. He was 69. Two days later, Mace read the obituary in the paper. He sat for some time with the coincidence. The man whose mathematical language he had used to argue that omens follow a physical law had died on the day the argument went public without any cause connecting the two events. The framework had just been demonstrated in front of him by the universe in the form he had spent 400 pages describing. Attention built between his work, which depended entirely on Feynman's apparatus, and the field of physics, which had not noticed his work and would not have endorsed it. Attention neither side could resolve internally, and from outside the interaction entirely, an event appeared that altered the field permanently. Feynman, who could have read the book, never would. Mace's argument, which would have been embarrassing to the physics establishment if defended in person by the man who validated its core diagrams, would never be tested that way. What was a coincidence by every materialist standard had also been a perfect demonstration.

Mace spent the rest of his life arguing that the mechanism extended further than physicists were willing to admit and further than magicians were willing to investigate. He did not gain much ground in either camp. Physicists who read the book read it once and dismissed it. Magicians who read it found the physics impenetrable and went back to their grimoires. The book remained for almost 40 years in a kind of private circulation between people who had stumbled on it and recognize something they could not unrecognize.

The framework is not difficult. The protocol is not exotic. The mathematics are the mathematics every undergraduate physicist learns. The technique was developed by an artist in a London bedsit a century ago and refined by a synchronicity Jung witnessed in a Zurich consulting room. What was missing was someone willing to look at all three at once. That book exists. The mechanism does not require permission. It does not require initiation. It does not require belief in anything except what physicists already prove every day with instruments. It only requires that the work be done.
