Hey, I am Daniel Adelio. Today, I will be sharing the emerging technology in the food industry, particularly in the coffee industry, by introducing a robot barista with emotions.
The total coffee consumption in the Philippines in 2009 was about 3.4 million bags. The illustration shows the long-term increase in coffee consumption over the years in the Philippines. Through this, we need to have coffee shops where in it serves more in the shortest time possible with the usage of advanced technology.
In a report published by the World Economic Forum, it said the rise of machines and automation would eliminate 85 million jobs by 2025. But at the same time, the World Economic Forum expects 97 million new jobs to be created because of technology, meaning an overall addition of 12 million jobs. It is stressed the need for reskilling and upskilling from employers to ensure staff are sufficiently equipped for the future of work.
I am proposing to combine Sophia and Sawyer in order to create a robot barista with emotions. Hansen Robotics' most advanced human-like robot, Sophia, personifies our dreams for the future of AI as a unique combination of science, engineering, and artistry. Sophia is simultaneously a human-crafted science fiction character depicting the future of AI and robotics, and a platform for advanced robotics and AI research. The character of Sophia captures the imagination of global audiences. He is the world's first robot citizen and the first robot innovation ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme. The behind-the-scenes complexity of Sophia helps her build emotional connections and hold meaningful conversations with people. These interactions can each hear about what you care about and what you got.
On the other hand, the robot named Sawyer debuted in 2008 at a cafe in U.S. downtown business and shopping district of Shibuya. The single-armed robot barista scans certificates purchased from a vending machine and greets the customers. "Would you care for a delicious coffee?" the robot barista, with a screen showing a pair of cartoon eyes, says in a flat tone and will proudly say, "I can make one better than any human beings around here."
They say that preparing food requires love and human touch. That something as making you a cup of coffee surely be handled by a robot with emotions. Think of a robot barista that can recognize human faces, see emotional expressions, and recognize bias and gestures. Think of a robot barista that can estimate your feelings during a conversation and try to find ways to achieve goals with you. A robot barista can adapt to your needs through intra and interpersonal development. A robot barista that has its own emotions too, roughly simulating human evolutionary psychology and various regions of the brain. Perfect cup every single time. No dealing with chatty baristas. And lastly, not worrying about having your name spelled wrong on a to-go cup.
The biggest advantage: 24/7 coffee shops because you don't have to worry about human labor. Also, no tips. The disadvantage: less motivation to go to the coffee shop because the cute barista you were hitting on got replaced with the robot barista. Of the sophisticated a robot barista, it's an expensive investment.
Intelligent machine systems are transforming our lives for the better. As these systems become more capable, our world becomes more efficient and consequently richer. However, there are some ethical issues in the implementation that we need to consider, such as unemployment: What happens after the end of jobs? Inequality: How do we distribute the wealth created by machines? Humanity: How do machines affect our behavior and interaction? Artificial Stupidity: How can we guard against mistakes? Racist Robots: How do we eliminate AI bias? Security: How do we keep AI safe from adversaries? Evil Genies: How do we protect against unintended consequences? Singularity: How do we stay in control of a complex intelligence system? And lastly, Robot Rights: How do we define the human treatment of AI?
For the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, it contributes to sustainable development in relation to the following goals:
First, Goal number eight: Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all, wherein it targets to achieve higher levels of economic productivity through diversification, technological upgrading, and innovation, including two of focus and high value-added and labor-intensive sectors.
Second, Goal number nine: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation, wherein it targets to support domestic technology development, research, and innovation in developing countries such as the Philippines, including by ensuring a conducive policy environment for industrial diversification and value-added commodities.
Lastly, Goal number 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, wherein it targets to support developing countries which strengthen their scientific and technological capacity to move towards more sustainable patterns of consumption and production.
