[Music] hey kids let's learn about one of the most fascinating fish of the ocean sea horses. they are tiny fish that are named for the shape of their head which looks like the head of [Music] yes a horse.
but technically seahorses are fish. many people may not consider sea horses fish at first due to their unique shape and lack of scales. but they are indeed. sea horses are fishes. their scientific name is hippocampus. let's find out more about seahorses.
let's start with seahorse's body. it's covered with tiny spiny plates all the way from their head down to their curled flexible tail. on top of their head they have a group of spines called coronet because it looks like a crown. they have excellent eyesight and their eyes are able to work independently on either side of their head. this means they can look forward and backwards at the same time. another interesting fact is that seahorses do not have teeth. they suck in their food and swallow it whole.
seahorses are carnivores and will eat a diet of a smaller shrimp and other small meals they can vacuum into their elongated snouts. also their curl flexible tail can grasp objects which comes in handy when these cool creatures went to anchor themselves to vegetation. [Music] [Applause]
seahorses get their exceptional flexibility from the structure of their bone plates which form its armor. [Music] to move forward seahorses use their fan shaped back fin and they swim upright. [Music]
there are around 50 seahorses pieces. among them we can find the thorny [Music] seahorse, the leafy sea dragon [Music], the pikmin seahorse that are as tiny as a nail [Music], and the common seahorse. what they all have in common is that they can be found in tropical and coastal waters like in mangroves [Music] and coral reefs. [Music]
seahorses get along with many other fishes like the clownfish, the jellyfish, the sea turtle, the octopus, and the puffer fish. the common enemies of the seahorses because they are their predators are crabs [Music], penguins, fish, and rays. [Music]
to protect themselves from predators seahorses can change colors like chameleons. these fabulous fish can be incredibly difficult to spot. can you find any seahorse? do you see them? [Music]
the seahorse life cycle is one of the most fascinating nature has to offer. do you know who is the only male animal in the world that can be pregnant? yes, that's right, the seahorse. where dads are the ones that give birth to babies. a female seahorse lays dozens, sometimes hundreds of eggs in a pouch on the male seahorse abdomen. it's a bit like the pouch of a kangaroo. the eggs remain in the pouch for up to 45 days until the eggs are ready to hatch. the new baby sea horses etch about the size of an m m. find other baby seahorses and float together in small groups clinging to each other using their tails. i hope you have learned a lot about seahorses. see you in the next video.
