Let me say something that might sound controversial. AI is not going to destroy music, but it is going to destroy the way music careers used to work. And most artists haven't realized that yet.
Because the real shift happening right now isn't about technology. It's about who controls creativity. This is the moment that we're living in.
For most of the music industry and for most of music history, creating a song required a lot of infrastructure. You needed a studio, engineers, expensive equipment, labels, marketers, distribution deals. Music creation was limited by access. If you didn't have the tools, you just couldn't compete.
But something changed. Today, a single person with a laptop can create songs, beats, music videos, visual content, entire albums, social posts, and tools like Sunno and Gemini and Google's Vo and all these other AI engines are accelerating that change at an incredible speed, which means we're entering into a completely new era of creativity.
So, this is the real shift. When people talk about AI and music, the conversation usually focuses on the one question that I hear everywhere I speak, panels that I'm on in communities of creatives, musicians, and entrepreneurs. Will AI replace artists?
But that's actually the wrong question because AI isn't replacing artists, isn't replacing songwriters or musicians. AI is replacing friction. The friction of creating music, the friction of producing videos and editing videos, the friction of generating content.
See, in the past, creativity was limited by production. Now, creativity is limited only by ideas, which means the advantage is shifting towards something very different. The old system, the advantage belonged to people with resources: the label budgets, industry connections. But in the AI era, the advantage belongs to people with vision. People who understand how to combine tools, how to tell stories, how to create experiences, and how to build audiences of raving super fans.
You see, the creator who understands systems will outperform the creative who understands production. Now, that is a massive shift because historically artists focused mostly on making music. Now, they must understand entrepreneurship, distribution, content, community, and AI technology.
Think about what's already possible today. With AI, you can generate a song, lyrics, instrumentals, vocal performances. You can create music videos, you can create visual worlds, marketing assets. What used to require a full creative team can now be done by one person experimenting with prompts and tools.
And that changes the economics of creativity because when production becomes easier, the scarce resource becomes something totally different. So, in a world where everything is possible, what becomes valuable? When tools become abundant, taste becomes valuable. That's right, taste, vision becomes valuable, story becomes valuable, your story becomes valuable, and your audience relationships and super fans become valuable.
Because if everyone can create content, the creators who succeed will be the ones who know what to create, when to create it, and why it matters. This is why some artists are thriving in the AI era. A lot of entrepreneurs that I'm working with, a lot of creatives that I'm working with are thriving in the AI era. They aren't competing on technical skill alone. They're competing with their ideas, on concepts, and on emotional resonance.
So, the creator economy is completely transformed. And AI isn't just changing music creation, it's accelerating something much bigger: the creator economy. For the first time in history, artists don't need to wait and ask for permission for their music careers. You can distribute music globally. You can build communities online. You can sell products direct to your fans. And now with the AI tools, you can produce content at a scale that was completely impossible a couple of years ago.
Which means the real opportunity isn't just making songs anymore. It's building creative ecosystems and universes. The artists who succeed in this new era will do three things well.
First, they'll experiment constantly, like AI rewards curiosity. The creators who explore the new tools and workflows will work faster than those who just are in the well-worn path, who resist the change.
Second, they will build communities. Fans are becoming the most valuable asset in creative careers because algorithms change, those platforms change, but communities remain.
And thirdly, they'll develop a clear creative vision, a crystal clear creative vision. Because when production becomes easy, originality becomes the real currency.
So, there's a danger that artists face. Some artists will try to compete purely on volume. They'll generate endless songs with AI, flood the streaming platforms, and just hope and pray that something goes viral. But the internet already has more content than anyone can consume. The creators who stand out won't be the ones producing the most content. They'll be the ones producing the most value, the most meaningful experiences, which requires something AI can't automate: the human connection.
If you're a musician or artist watching this, you're actually in an incredible position because artists already understand something many creators struggle with, and that is emotion. That is story. That is identity. See, music has always been one of the most powerful human connection elements. And when you combine that emotional power with modern creative tools like AI, the possibilities expand dramatically. Artists can now create worlds around their music, visual narratives, interactive communities, experiences that go far beyond a single song.
So, the future for music careers, the next generation of artists won't just release songs. They'll build universes. Their music will connect with videos and stories and communities and interactive experiences. And the creators who understand how to combine all of these elements together will shape the future of music. AI is simply the tool that accelerates that transformation.
So, instead of asking, "Will AI replace artists?", a better question is, "How can artists use AI to expand their creative power?" Because the creators who embrace this technology early will have an enormous advantage. They'll move faster, experiment more, and discover new creative possibilities before everyone else.
