I don’t know about you, but cardio has been one of those things that I didn’t really do consistently. That’s until I discovered that it doesn’t simply help you burn calories or improve your cardiovascular health. On the contrary, it has the incredible power to improve your overall energy production. And that’s why, in today’s video, we’re diving into the fascinating realm of improving mitochondrial health with Zone 2 and VO2 max cardio.

Let’s start with a quick recap on mitochondria so that you can get the most out of this video. Mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of our cells and play a vital role in energy production through a process called oxidative phosphorylation. They generate ATP, the fuel that powers our cells and enables various cellular processes.

But mitochondria are not only responsible for energy production. These tiny structures are essential in various cell functions, including aiding cell growth, replication, regulation of aging, and even determining when a cell should die. They also contribute to important processes like breaking down amino acids and fats, maintaining calcium balance in cells, controlling cell growth and division, and even generating heat in the body. Quite a lot of power from these little organelles, right? You would have to agree, then, that maintaining healthy mitochondria is crucial for your health.

Optimal mitochondrial function, in fact, supports physical performance, cognitive function, and vitality. On the contrary, compromised mitochondrial health can lead to decreased energy levels and increased chances of you getting sick. Interestingly, mitochondrial health is closely linked to inflammation and the aging process, something that we’ll cover in more detail in next week’s video. Mitochondrial dysfunction can trigger chronic, low-grade inflammation known as “inflammaging,” which is associated with aging-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, neurodegenerative disorders, and cardiovascular diseases. We for sure want to stay away from all that, and that’s where Zone 2 and VO2 max cardio can help.

Let’s start with Zone 2 cardio to understand why it’s so special for your mitochondrial health. We talked about Zone 2 in our earlier video, so if you want to dive deeper into that topic, I highly recommend you watch that video. Zone 2 involves engaging in cardiovascular exercises at a medium-intensity range, typically around 60-70% of your maximum heart rate.

So, what sets Zone 2 training apart and triggers these remarkable mitochondrial processes? The answer lies in the unique metabolic demands it places on your body. During Zone 2 workouts, your body primarily relies on aerobic metabolism, which means it burns glucose and fat with the assistance of oxygen to generate energy. Here’s where the mitochondria step into the spotlight. The stress induced by Zone 2 exercise acts as a stimulus, prompting your body to create additional mitochondria. This adaptive response leads to an abundance of mitochondria, ultimately resulting in enhanced utilization of glucose and fat, thus fueling the generation of ATP.

With an increased number of mitochondria, energy production reaches new heights, enabling you to perform better and endure longer. It’s like having more powerhouses in your cells, constantly churning out energy to meet the demands of your exercise routine. But the magic of Zone 2 training doesn’t stop there. It not only increases the quantity but also elevates the quality of your mitochondria. This means that your mitochondria become stronger and more proficient at utilizing glucose and fat, improving your metabolic flexibility.

Think of metabolic flexibility as your body’s ability to seamlessly switch between utilizing carbohydrates and fats as fuel sources, depending on the demands of the activity. Here’s an example to help illustrate the concept. Imagine your body as a hybrid car with dual fuel capabilities—carbohydrates and fats. During low-intensity activities, such as a leisurely walk or light jog, your body primarily relies on fat as fuel. As the intensity increases, like stepping on the gas pedal, your body begins to utilize more carbohydrates.

Now, by incorporating Zone 2 training into your fitness routine, you enhance your body’s ability to switch between these fuel sources smoothly. It’s like upgrading your hybrid car’s engine to optimize performance, making sure it seamlessly transitions between gasoline and electric power to deliver a smoother, more efficient ride.

Zone 2 is great, but it’s only a part of the equation. The other part is VO2 max training, also known as Zone 5. We will link our video all about it in the description so that later you can get fully up to speed. But to sum it up, the main difference is that VO2 max training, contrary to Zone 2, focuses on high-intensity intervals alternated with active recovery sets.

As an example, here’s a workout of this kind I did the other day. But to fully grasp the impact of VO2Max training on mitochondrial health, we need to take a step back and understand the relationship between muscle oxygen utilization and bioenergetics. During exercise, our muscles require more energy, resulting in increased muscle oxygen consumption. This increase is directly linked to mitochondrial function within our muscles.

Research has shown that there is a connection between a person’s VO2Max, which measures their maximal oxygen uptake during exercise, and the overall amount of mitochondria present in their body. This means that the more mitochondria we have, the greater our muscles’ capacity to generate energy through oxidative processes. In simpler terms, the quantity of special enzymes present in the mitochondria determines how well our muscles can convert oxygen and nutrients into usable energy. Therefore, increasing the number of mitochondria in your muscle tissue, achieved through training, becomes vital for improving endurance capacity and fatigue resistance.

Let’s see what happens to your mitochondria during your Zone 5 sessions. The high-intensity intervals of VO2Max training impose significant stress on your mitochondria. This stress stimulates adaptations that enhance their efficiency and function. As a result, your mitochondria become even better at delivering and utilizing oxygen to produce ATP. These adaptations include improvements in mitochondrial respiration, oxidative capacity, and even an increase in mitochondrial mass.

To overly simplify this, it’s like your mitochondria are lifting weights. That’s because your cardiovascular system limits maximal oxygen consumption during short, high-intensity exercise, and your mitochondria are forced to become better at using it. It’s clear, then, that the benefits of VO2Max cardio go way beyond cardiovascular fitness. While your overall VO2Max capacity may not change significantly due to genetic factors, the increase in the number and efficiency of mitochondria within your muscles plays a crucial role in enhancing endurance, athletic performance, and overall well-being.

However, the true magic lies in combining Zone 2 and VO2Max training. This dynamic duo holds the key to unlocking your body’s full potential and revolutionizing your mitochondrial health. To fully harness the mitochondrial benefits of Zone 2 and VO2Max training, strategic integration is essential. Embrace a periodization approach, where specific phases are dedicated to each method.

Begin with a base-building phase focused on Zone 2 training until you reach 150-180 minutes per week. This phase establishes a solid aerobic foundation and stimulates mitochondrial abundance. Transition to a VO2Max training phase, where you switch your Zone 2 sessions to high-intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions. These workouts push your cardiovascular system to near-maximal effort. Balance the intensity of VO2Max sessions with adequate rest and recovery between workouts.

Once you have established a solid foundation of Zone 2 and VO2Max training, integrate both methods into your routine. Alternate between Zone 2 and VO2Max workouts throughout the week, maintaining a balance that suits your fitness level and recovery capacity. For example, you can have two Zone 2 sessions and one VO2Max session in a week or adjust the ratio based on your preferences and goals. This continuous stimulation leads to mitochondrial adaptations, enhancing endurance capacity and overall performance, unlocking a more vibrant and energetic version of yourself.

However, remember to listen to your body’s signals and adjust your training accordingly, prioritizing rest and recovery when needed.
