I’m Josh, and on today’s episode of The Infographics Show, we're exposing the insane Epstein files conspiracy theories that turned out to be true.
“His island was like an evil villain’s lair”
Countless conspiracies painted Epstein Island as being like some sort of evil villain’s secret lair - complete with spy cameras, eerie decorations, and other disturbing details. For years, people called those claims far-fetched… until now. The Epstein files painted a very different picture of life on the island. Numerous pictures, search warrant records, videos, and other documents exposed just how sick and strange it really was… in more ways than one.
There are records of numerous secret cameras scattered across the island - possibly used to covertly record some of the guests’ most private and intimate moments. We’ll get into that a little deeper later on. The island was also filled with bizarre decorations - creepy masks hung on the walls and artwork depicting young women in states of undress. Similar pieces appeared in Epstein’s other properties as well. His multi-million dollar New York townhouse had some of the strangest artwork of all- including a statue of a bride hanging from a noose in the hallway, and two eerily realistic statues of crying babies. Back on the island, investigators found guns, sex toys, role-play outfits, a dentist’s chair, and other disturbing paraphernalia. One room even had a trapdoor - an escape route that led straight into the water. It may not have been used for anything nefarious, but given what we know about Epstein and his associates, it’s still incredibly unsettling - which leads us onto the next theory.
“He didn’t act alone”
For years, the story went that Epstein was just a lone wolf - a depraved man committing heinous crimes in secret. Meanwhile, he somehow maintained the facade of a quirky billionaire to his high-profile friends around the world. But conspiracy theorists pushed back against that idea. Critics argued there was no way Epstein could have carried out his crimes - abusing hundreds of victims - without other people not just knowing… but actively helping him. Others felt that it was impossible for one man to have that much power and influence - urely people wouldn’t just go along with his every whim.
But thanks to the files, the ‘lone wolf’ theory has been completely shattered. It wasn’t one man abusing his power and wealth. It was an entire ecosystem of illicit activity. Records show that there were dozens of staff members working for Epstein - plane crews and pilots to cleaners, serving staff, gardeners and so on. There’s no direct evidence they knew the full extent of what was happening. But the signs suggest many of them must have at least suspected something. The rulebook for Epstein’s island has numerous strict instructions for staff to not talk about anything they might see during the course of their employment. Some staff members acknowledged seeing young women on the island. Victim statements also suggest that some of Epstein’s staff must have had a suspicion of what he was up to. His plane crew were told not to enter the cabin without knocking first, but they still have seen “half-dressed teenagers” getting on board. investigators uncovered signs of a global network of recruiters - operating in a number of countries - who allegedly targeted young women and pressured them into traveling to Epstein Island for so-called ‘massages’ and other abuse. Then, of course, there were all the famous faces that Epstein associated with, including princes and princesses.
“He had connections to royalty”
We already knew Epstein had ties to royalty. His friendship with the former prince, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor - once second in line to the British throne - is well documented. However, many conspiracy theorists felt that the pedophile’s royal connections went even deeper, and when the files finally came out, their suspicions were proven correct.
Firstly, the files revealed just how close Epstein and Andrew were. The former prince’s name comes up thousands of times in email chains and conversations. There were also many email exchanges between Epstein and Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York. She asked the convicted sex trafficker for money on multiple occasions, and he helped her evade bankruptcy back in 2011. The files also show that Epstein paid for Ferguson’s travel expenses, while the former Duchess labeled Epstein a “dear spectacular and special friend.” She even wrote “marry me” in one of her emails to him - though that may have been more of a joke rather than a proposal.

It wasn’t just the British royals that Epstein had ties to. Records show that the expected future queen of Norway, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, remained close to Epstein even after his 2008 conviction, calling him a “crazy friend” and “a sweetheart.” The human trafficker also exchanged crude and sometimes disturbing messages with Raafat Al-Sabbagh - a key adviser in Saudi Arabia’s royal court and a close friend of the Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman. There’s no concrete proof these individuals knew the full extent of Epstein’s activities. But many of their messages suggest they were aware of his obsession with sex - and his particular interest in young women And they certainly weren’t the only ones.
“Powerful people knew what he was doing”
One of the biggest conspiracy theories around Epstein is that many of his long-term friends and associates knew exactly what he was doing, But plenty of people refused to believe that. If people knew about a sex trafficking pedophile, they would have reported him, right? Well, the files seem to suggest otherwise.
There are many messages in the emails that fall into the “disturbing” category, with many of them directly mentioning young girls, like one email from a redacted individual to Epstein which states: “your littlest girl was a little naughty,” or other messages that speak about the ages of certain girls – some of whom were only in their teens. There are also many messages from famous people to or about Epstein in which they mention his tastes or lifestyle choices. It’s important to note that none of these messages directly implicate the people involved. Many of the high-profile figures named in the files have denied any wrongdoing or knowledge of Epstein’s crimes.
There was one message from health and wellness influencer Peter Attia, in which he wrote to Epstein: “The biggest problem with becoming friends with you? The life you lead is so outrageous, and yet I can’t tell a soul...” Billionaire Richard Branson also wrote in an email about what he called Epstein’s “harem.” Meanwhile, Hollywood movie director, Woody Allen, famously compared Epstein to Dracula and spoke of the young women at his dinners and events. There are also historic quotes from other high-profile individuals, including US President Donald Trump, who said of Epstein: “It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”
Again, none of this means that these people knew Epstein was a pedophile. But the fact that so many people continued to engage and maintain friendships with him even after his 2008 conviction for child sex crimes raises a number of questions. The next theory explains why some of these people might have decided to stay silent about Epstein’s activities.
“He hid cameras to film people at his island”
Another long-running conspiracy claimed that Epstein had dozens of spy cameras hidden throughout his properties - capturing intimate encounters involving himself, his victims, and the high-profile guests who visited his estate. Again, this was an idea that people pushed back on. Critics argued that if videos existed showing famous billionaires, presidents, or world leaders, they would have leaked by now.
Well, the Epstein Files do contain several thousand videos. Many have been redacted, and many are pornographic. While none implicate famous figures, they provide clear evidence that secret cameras were installed across Epstein’s properties. There’s even an email exchange between the disgraced financier and one of his staff members, asking them to purchase a set of motion detection cameras from a spy store. The staff member goes on to note that they’re in the process of concealing the cameras inside Kleenex boxes. Some of the released videos also seem to have been captured by these hidden cameras - or ones like them. One grainy black and white clip, for example, shows Epstein’s office, seemingly filmed from a corner of the room..
There’s no telling what Epstein might have captured on these cameras. But given all the other evidence - like the massive collection of sex toys and paraphernalia scattered throughout his properties, his reputation for hosting sex parties and introducing young women to his famous friends - it’s not hard to connect the dots. And, as the next theory shows, there’s also plenty of evidence that Epstein used these cameras – and other means – to possibly blackmail some big name individuals.
“He had dirt on powerful people”
The more the world learned about Epstein, the more they saw how he was able to almost miraculously get away with his crimes for so long. Even when he was caught and convicted of sexual crimes in 2008, he seemed to get a remarkably light sentence - spending a mere 13 months in total behind bars. This was despite the fact that investigators identified dozens of young women that he had allegedly abused. Large parts of the public believed that this was simply because Epstein was so wealthy and powerful, with friends in high places and enough money to afford the best lawyers.
Some conspiracy theorists, however, argued that the explanation for this was that Epstein had dirt, or “kompromat” – the type of compromising information used to blackmail important individuals, like politicians. The Epstein Files don’t show any specific examples of blackmail. But they do suggest that Epstein gathered information on others, looked for opportunities to collect even more compromising material, and acted like someone who had influence over well-known individuals.
In a famous New York Times interview, for example, Epstein claimed to have dirt on powerful people. He also seemed to know the secret habits of billionaires, entrepreneurs, and other famous figures. There is evidence of law enforcement officers recovering quantities of CDs and storage media, like hard drives, many of which were labeled with names or identifiers. The contents of these items have never been disclosed. Investigative reporters have also painted Epstein as someone who used his connections to gather information. Even though there’s no clear evidence of him using information to coerce or threaten others, it’s not too hard to imagine him doing so. And, as the next theory shows, Epstein’s circle extended far and wide, into numerous fields.
“He had connections in Hollywood”
Many conspiracy theories revolve around Hollywood in some form or another. There have been suggestions that A-list actors and Oscar-winning directors are all part of some secret Illuminati-style cabal, or that they regularly engage in illicit, unspeakable activities. Well, the Epstein files don’t back up any of that, in particular. But they do prove the long-running theory that Epstein had ties to Hollywood and knew some of the some of the industry’s biggest players.
Chief among them was acclaimed director, actor, writer, and comedian, Woody Allen, who, like Epstein, has also been plagued by sexual abuse claims. Allen and his wife, Soon-Yi Previn, were New York neighbors of Epstein and often dined together. There are also many email exchanges between the couple and Epstein in the files, including one particularly disturbing exchange that speaks about eating hearts and bones. Epstein also had a close friendship with film publicist, Peggy Siegal; veteran producer, Barry Josephson; media mogul, Casey Wasserman; actor, Chris Tucker; and director, Brett Ratner, among others. There’s no evidence that any of these individuals knew about Epstein’s activities or were involved in any wrongdoing. But the sheer number of famous people who knew him, met him, and even formed friendships with him shows just how far his influence reached. That influence also extended into the world of politics.
“World leaders flew on his plane”
Many conspiracies focus on Epstein’s circle of friends and associates - including U.S. presidents, billionaire entrepreneurs, world-leading scientists, and other famous figures. The Epstein files contain detailed flight logs for his private planes - including the infamous ‘Lolita Express.’ Thanks to these logs, we now know exactly who flew with Epstein, when they flew, and how many times they traveled to his island resort and other locations around the world
In September 2002, logs show that former U.S. president Bill Clinton was on board, along with Hollywood stars Chris Tucker and Kevin Spacey. Records show that Clinton was one of the most common passengers on Epstein’s flights, traveling on his jet on 27 occasions to more than a dozen different locations. Epstein’s brother, Mark Epstein, has also stated that President Donald Trump, took at least one trip on Epstein’s Lolita Express. An email within the files mentions Trump being listed as a passenger on at least 8 flights between 1993 and 1996, sometimes traveling with his daughter, Tiffany, and son, Eric. Other notable passengers included former United States Secretary of the Treasury Larry Summers, businessman Ron Burkle, supermodel Naomi Campbell, and lawyer Alan Dershowitz.
And with high profile friends, comes high profile secrets.
“He used his influential associates to get top secret information”
One possible reason Epstein built such a vast network of high-profile friends was to extract sensitive - or even top-secret - information from them. He could exploit their positions of privilege to enrich himself. Now, there’s evidence to support that claim. Epstein was clearly close with the British politician, Peter Mandelson, with the two exchanging numerous emails and correspondence over the years. This included periods when Mandelson held various, prominent positions within the UK government. Not only does Mandelson, at times, describe Epstein as his “best pal” and a “naughty boy,” but he has also been accused of leaking important governmental information to the financier. In 2009, it’s alleged he shared high-level Downing Street documents with Epstein. In 2010, he forwarded confidential minutes of a meeting between the British Chancellor of the Exchequer and the director of the US National Economic Council. He also gave Epstein advance notice of a €500bn bailout from the EU to save the euro, and let him know that the former Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, was about to resign before it was officially announced.
So, why did Epstein want all this info? That leads us on to the next frightening theory.
“He may have been an international asset”
This is one of the most controversial and potentially important theories surrounding Epstein. While it hasn’t been proven true or false, there is increasing amounts of evidence to support it. The theory states that Epstein may have been secretly working for an international government or intelligence agency - Russia and Israel being the two countries most frequently named by conspiracy theorists.
While there are no obvious smoking guns, there are multiple emails that show Epstein’s interest in Russia and eagerness to meet with its president, Vladimir Putin. Several emails speak of face-to-face meetings between the two men, and Putin’s name appears around 1,000 times in the files. Some exchanges involve Epstein inquiring about a Russian visa or sharing his plans to reinvent the Russian financial system. Other messages involve Epstein offering to help the Russians better understand President Donald Trump, or to share other valuable insights with Kremlin officials. There are also emails between the trafficker and former Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Barak, some of which also talk about meetings with Putin and Russian representatives. The theory also gains weight when you consider that the father of Epstein’s closest associate – Ghislaine Maxwell – was Robert Maxwell, a man accused of being an asset for the Soviet KGB and the Israeli Mossad.
Next, let’s look at some of the frightening theories about Epstein’s death.
“The jail falsified records the night he died.”
Arguably the most famous conspiracy theory surrounding Epstein is the “Epstein didn’t kill himself” theory. Those four words have been seen on countless message boards and blog posts, as well as being uttered by famous figures during interviews. It’s even been used in memes and merchandise since the sex trafficker’s death in 2019. Some theorists have even taken the concept further, suggesting that Epstein might not have died, at all - he’s actually still out there somewhere, living the life of a free man.
There’s no clear evidence in the files to support that, though there are a few mysterious items that have been interpreted as potential clues. There isn’t any direct evidence that he didn’t commit suicide, either. One thing that has been confirmed, however, is that the jail where he died – the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City – falsified records regarding the night of his death. There were two guards on duty that night that had been tasked with checking up on Epstein: Tova Noel and Michael Thomas. They failed to follow jail policy that night, forgetting to check in on Epstein, and even falling asleep at their desks. In an attempt to cover up their mistakes, both guards signed false certifications and created fake log entries to make it look as though they’d completed their rounds. This doesn’t mean they – or the prison at large – were involved in any sort of secret scheme to murder Epstein or let him escape. But it does seem suspicious, and the next proven conspiracy is even more concerning.
“His death was highly suspicious”
Immediately after Epstein’s death was announced, the internet was awash with theories about what had really happened. Many conspiracy theories claimed Epstein’s death was highly questionable. Detractors, on the other hand, argued there was nothing unusual about a sex trafficker - one facing the prospect of life in prison - slipping into depression and taking his own life.
That doesn’t mean that there’s any definitive proof about Epstein’s death, there were a lot of strange coincidences and suspicious circumstances in the days and hours leading up to it. There was the issue of the two guards failing to check on him. That meant that his body wasn’t found until several hours after he’d died. There was also the fact that two surveillance cameras situated outside his cell stopped working the night of his death - meaning that there was minimal footage for investigators to work with. Epstein had recently been placed under constant supervision after a prior suicide attempt. When that supervision was lifted, the prison ordered that he always have a cellmate - someone who could alert the guards if his life was in danger. On the night of his death, however, Epstein was alone in his cell. The prison also removed Epstein’s body from his cell without taking any photos beforehand, and there were inconsistencies in the official accounts of how he died.
And the next theory isn’t going to make the “Epstein didn’t kill himself” theory go away, any time soon.
“He was about to name names just before his death”
Conspiracy theorists have, for years, scrutinized the timing of Epstein’s death. Many speculate that he must have been preparing to reveal some of the important, influential people who took part in his illegal activities. They also argue that he must, therefore, have been killed as a way to silence him. For years, that theory felt like a bit of a stretch, but the Epstein files have provided a powerful piece of evidence to support it.
According to the files, just days before Epstein died, FBI and Southern District of New York agents met with his attorney. They discussed, in general terms, the possibility of Epstein cooperating with authorities. They didn’t go into detail about what cooperation might entail and what evidence or information Epstein would be willing to provide. But the fact that he appeared ready to talk is enough to question the timing and nature of his death. There’s no hard evidence that he was killed, but it all adds to the suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. The next theory concerns one of the people Epstein was closest to in the days leading up to his death.
“He had a secret girlfriend”
Epstein reportedly abused hundreds of victims over the years, with some surmising that he couldn’t possibly have had time for genuine relationships, given the nature of his crimes. However, there was a long-running theory that he had a secret long-term girlfriend in the weeks before his death - even from behind his prison cell bars. Now, we know that theory was true, and we also know her identity. Her name is Karyna Shuliak. She met Epstein when she was just 20 years old, remaining loyal to him until the end.
Records show that the first encounter between the pair was in 2009, when Shuliak was studying dental medicine at Minsk University in her home nation of Belarus. Epstein, who was 36 years her senior, paid for her trip to the United States. He also offered to cover the costs of her studies and support her visa application. She became a big part of his life, and he kept his promises, helping her into Columbia University's College of Dental Medicine after making a $100,000 donation to the dean. He also lobbied his contacts to help her get a residence permit and even organized her marriage to one of his acquaintances to help her stay in the U.S. after her permit expired. Shuliak was clearly smitten with Epstein. In various emails, she profusely expresses her love for him and calls him the “purest man out of all men.” She also stood to inherit an enormous fortune at the time of his death. Epstein left her $100 million in his will, as well as his various properties and a collection of diamonds, plus a 32-carat diamond ring. However, she is unlikely to see a single penny of that, as Epstein’s assets have been frozen and will instead be used for a victims’ compensation fund.
The next theory is perhaps the most unsettling of them all, in terms of what it means for the real way the world works.
“Many of the world’s richest and most powerful people know, help, and protect one another”
A lot of big conspiracies center around the idea that the so-called “elite” of the world operate on a completely different level to the rest of us. They have their own laws, systems, and privileges that everyday people can’t even imagine. Some theories suggest that elites exploit their positions to get away with heinous crimes, or that they secretly met up in clandestine, cult-like gatherings. The most sinister conspiracies go further, talking about the likes of human sacrifice, cannibalism, and other inhumane, unimaginable acts.
There’s no evidence of that sort of thing in the files. There is evidence that the most powerful people in society often know, help, and protect each other - regardless of differences in background, career, or politics. We’ve already covered the countless influential figures Epstein knew - and many of them likely interacted at his parties, on his planes, or during dinners and other events. They come from different circles, including politics, the media, entertainment, science, and the arts - but many of those circles seem to overlap. There are numerous recorded instances of people in the files reaching out to Epstein to ask him for money to save their businesses, fund their research projects, help them with legal matters, or help their kids get into college. All this paints a picture of a world where powerful people get to do whatever they want, covering each other in times of crisis and funding each other’s hobbies and projects.
“He wanted to start his own baby factory”
Again, this theory sounds more like something from a movie villain, instead of something that would happen in the real world. However, there is plenty of evidence to show that Jeffrey Epstein at least thought about the idea of setting up some sort of “baby-making facility” at his New Mexico ranch.
Records show that he was obsessed with genetics. He seemed to believe DNA was the key to determining someone’s future success, at times making deeply racist claims that Black people were less intelligent because of their genetics. He even discussed plans with prominent scientists to modify genes - to create ‘designer babies,’ make people smarter, or even increase women’s libido. But that’s not the creepiest part. In several discussions with scientists and academics, Epstein also admitted that he wanted to impregnate women at his ranch, ideally having up to 20 pregnant women at a time. This was part of his deep-seated desire to spread what he thought were his “superior genes” as much as possible. While there’s no evidence that the baby ranch plan ever came to fruition, the next theory suggests that Epstein may have had at least one child that the wider world didn’t know about.
“Epstein had a secret child”
Given the enormous amount of women Epstein is believed to have sexually abused, there have long been rumors and conspiracies about him fathering secret children/ Those rumors have often been dismissed, but the Epstein files gave us at least some clear indicators that Epstein may have had at least one child.
One of the most disturbing elements in the files, for example, appears to be the diary of a young woman. She wrote many of her entries in code, and included photos, newspaper clippings, and other materials alongside her text- items that investigators and online sleuths have spent significant time decoding. They found multiple passages where the girl talks about being pregnant, allegedly with Epstein’s child, and giving birth with Ghislaine Maxwell in the room. Minutes later, her newborn was reportedly taken away, never to be seen again. She also included a pregnancy scan image in her journal, as well as references to Epstein treating her like a “human incubator.” There were also emails suggesting that Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell attempted some sort of fertility procedure together, along with a message from Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York, congratulating Epstein on his “baby boy.” There are no further details, as of yet, about the identities of these secret children, what happened to them next, or where they are today, but the clues are clear to see.
“He grew plants that could alter people’s minds”
This is, without doubt, one of the strangest conspiracies about Epstein that has turned out to be at least partially true. In a March 2014 email from the files, Epstein asks an associate named Ann Rodriguez about some “trumpet plants at nursery.” It might not sound particularly concerning or suspicious. But to a plant expert, the term “trumpet plants” should send alarm bells ringing. Why? Because it more than likely refers to Angel’s Trumpet plants, which have also been nicknamed “Devil’s Breath” plants.
These plants produce one of the scariest chemical compounds in the world: scopolamine. Epstein knew all about what this drug could do, because another email shows him being forwarded a Daily Mail article all about it. The article, titled “Scopolamine: Powerful drug growing in the forests of Colombia that ELMINATES free will,” details what the drug can do. It notes how it has the potential to cause hallucinations, memory loss, and can even make people lose their free will, becoming like “children” or “zombies,” and easily swayed to do things they wouldn’t normally do. In the worst cases, extensive exposure can even cause death.
There aren’t too many more explicit references to scopolamine or trumpet plants in the Epstein files, but there are many victim statements in which victims note that they were drugged prior to being abused. Some of them also report seeing bizarre things after being drugged, which could be scopolamine-induced hallucinations.
