NATO fighter jets scrambled over the Baltic Sea this week after three Russian MiG31s violated Estonian airspace in a brazen 12-minute incursion. The aircraft flew dark. No flight plans, transponders off, no communication with air traffic control before they were confronted by Italian F-35s stationed in Estonia as part of NATO's air policing mission.
The jets eventually retreated, but the message from Moscow was unmistakable. Russia is willing to test the alliance's defenses, daring the West to respond. European leaders wasted no time condemning the violation. Kajjakalis, the EU's foreign policy chief and former Estonian prime minister, called it an extremely dangerous provocation. European Commission President Ursula Vandelion said Europe stands with Estonia and promised a firm response.
Estonia's foreign minister described the episode as unprecedently brazen, noting that Russia had already breached Estonian airspace four times this year. Ten summoned Moscow's charged affair in protest and requested NATO consultations under article 4 of the treaty which obliges members to meet whenever an allies independence or security is threatened.
This latest incident follows a series of deliberate Russian provocations, drone incursions over Polish territory, airspace violations in Romania and Muldova, and repeated harassment along NATO's eastern frontier. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zalinski warned allies that these are not accidents but calculated moves by the Kremlin. Strong action must be taken, he said, urging a unified response before provocations escalate further.
What is happening now is the direct result of weakness in Washington. Instead of confronting Putin's aggression, Donald Trump has excused it, mocked NATO, and cast doubt on America's commitment to its allies. He treated Putin like a partner rather than an adversary, praising him while undermining the very institutions created to contain Moscow's imperial ambitions. Trump's naivity and refusal to hold Russia accountable after its interference in US elections, its invasion of Crimea, and its constant threats against Europe sent a clear signal. The world's most powerful democracy would not lead.

It'll all get done right. And likewise, Russia and Ukraine will get done. It's you never know in war, you know, war is a different thing. Things happen that are very opposite of what you thought. You thought you were going to have an easy time or a hard time and it turns out to be the reverse. >>
This vacuum of leadership has emboldened the Kremlin. When Trump undermined NATO by publicly questioning whether the US would defend its allies, Putin heard opportunity. When Trump repeated Kremlin talking points about Ukraine and dismissed Russia's threats as overblown, Putin calculated that the West would blink. The result is a more dangerous world, one in which Russian fighter jets dare to intrude on NATO airspace and Russian drones rain down on Poland.
Britain's intelligence chief Richard Moore put it bluntly. There is no evidence Putin seeks peace. Instead, Moscow is stringing the West along while escalating military pressure. This reality should not surprise anyone. Authoritarian leaders do not retreat when flattered. They advance. Trump's indulgence of Putin did not moderate Russia's behavior. It encouraged it.
The current crisis is not just about Estonia or Poland. It's about whether NATO, weakened by years of Trump's sabotage and Russia's relentless pressure, can deter aggression before it spirals into a broader conflict. European leaders are doing what they can with sanctions and air patrols, but the damage is clear. The credibility of the West has been eroded and Putin is testing the limits of what he can get away with.
The incursion over Estonia is not an isolated event. It's a symptom of a world destabilized by authoritarian aggression and by the failure of Donald Trump to confront it. NATO's jets may have forced the Russians to retreat this time, but unless the West shows real unity and resolve, Moscow will continue to push. Trump's appeasement gave Putin the green light. Now the world is living with the consequences of the shadow of war.
