Say, "Heavenly Father, I thank You that tonight, because I've drawn near to You, the Bible promises that You will draw near to me. I'm ready, Lord, for a fresh encounter. Holy Spirit, open my ears that I might hear something new. Holy Spirit, open my eyes that I might see like I've never seen before. Holy Spirit, move on my heart that I might believe at a whole 'nother level. In Jesus' name, Amen."
I'm making if you believe that prayer, give God one more great shout! Give Him a faith clap like in faith tonight. Something's gonna shift, something's coming loose, something's gonna change, break through. His mind! Amen! Give it two or three people a high five. In fact, while you're grabbing a seat, would you put your hands together and just thank the musicians and the singers? You guys were unbelievable tonight, absolutely incredible. And then Zeke and the team that were dancing before. Can we give those guys a great round of applause wherever you guys are? Gone! I saw Zeke this morning, unbelievable with our pastor band at Logan. Logan was rocking this morning. And I such a privilege. It's kind of sad that the weekend's come to an end, but on a positive note, this is the best message I'm gonna preach all weekend. So God always saves the best for last. I thought I may as well just join God on this one. So I want you to come with me. If you do have your Bibles, if not, don't worry, you can follow it on the screen. But if you do have your Bibles, come with me to Joshua chapter 2. And just as you're turning to Joshua chapter 2, and as it's about to come up on the screen, let me just help you because I didn't grow up in church. I got saved on a beach. I didn't get saved in a church. I think because God knew I wasn't gonna go anywhere near a church, He had to kind of find me on a beach and save me. And so I kind of got into Christianity and began to realize that the Bible, when I first started reading, it appeared to be a book of words. It appears that every page has words on it. But I found out 33 years later that the Bible is actually a scrapbook. It's actually a picture book. It's actually, it's more like God's Instagram account because all the way through the Bible, there are pictures. And there are pictures of the thing that is the most dear to God, and it's Jesus. And there are magnificent patterns. Now, how many people here have ever heard that, you know, that God moves in mysterious ways? And this, I just need to let you also understand that my theology, based on my experience with God, is that God has done this. So this is my Bible. And God, God has done this. This is how we have a Bible. God has done this. He has actually imprinted himself into print. The Bible says, "This is the Word," and "the Word became flesh." This Word, this Word is God in print. Not only is it God in print, but the Word has very, very distinct and predictable patterns. And so what I've discovered in my life is that God is not mysterious. God is not indifferent. God is not ignorant. God is, God is not precocious. I have found that God is not only incredibly loving and engaging, but God has actually created formulas and patterns throughout scripture so that you can know that if my people who are called by my name humble myself and pray, turn from then, I will hear from heaven and I will heal their land. That, that you'll find that God is a God of promises. All of these promises are preceded with a premise. For every premise, there's a promise. For every promise, there's a premise. But God wants him. God wants you to find Him. God doesn't just want you to find Him, but God wants you to walk Him. God wants you to know that as you walk with Him, you can begin to discover His ways. Now, you need to understand that His ways aren't your ways, and His thoughts aren't your thoughts. As, as the heavens are higher than the earth, so His ways higher than our ways, and His thoughts higher than your thoughts. So the beautiful thing is, God says in Jeremiah 29:11, "I know the thoughts that I think toward you." I want you to notice, God doesn't think thoughts about you, or He doesn't limit His thoughts to just being about you. God doesn't just sit in heaven going, "Huh, yurts." He actually, He actually thinks thoughts toward you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, seven days a week. God is broadcasting His thoughts toward you, toward me, hoping that just one of those thoughts will be captured, that we'll just believe just one of those thoughts. And as soon as you believe one of His thoughts, it elevates you from the path that you've previously been on into a celestial, or into an extra-dimensional path. So that's just kind of taken for whatever. But I just want to also just take a quick moment before we jump in and just thank your amazing pastors, Pastor Wayne and Lynn Alcorn. I've just been so blessed. I love Pastor Wayne and Lynn. They've been heroes of mine. Even more heroes to watch Ryan get up the whole weekend and just lead like a boss. You're an incredible. And Shannon's just done a great job looking after me. And just what an amazing team you have. And I gotta tell you, Pastor Wayne, when I was at Logan this morning, Ben and his beautiful bride and beautiful family were healing it down there. The worship was extraordinary down there. And just, you know, everything you seem to touch just seems to her. I know it, you make it look like it was gold, but I know that there's been a lot of great hard work and leadership behind it. But you're an extraordinary human being, and it's an honor to her to know you and be your friend. All right, you're ready, Ken? Come with me, Joshua chapter 2. Preaching to the on-fire crowd. Now, you need to understand this in the Bible. So, so don't, don't start throwing stones at me when I start reading, okay? It's in the, I'm only reading the Bible. All right. Joshua chapter 2. Now, Joshua the son of Nun, not the son of a nun, the son of Nun, the son of Noon, I think it's pronounced, sent out two men from Acacia Grove to spy out secretly, saying, "Go view the land, especially Jericho." The next verse says, "So they went and they came to the house of a harlot named Rahab and lodged their." Awkward silence. So they, when they came to the house of a harlot named Rahab, and they lodged there, it was told the king of Jericho, saying, "Behold, men have come here tonight from the tune of Israel to search out the country." So the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, "Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered your house, for they have come to search out all the country." Then the woman took the two men and hid them. So she said, "Yes, the men came to me, but I don't know where they were from. And it happened as the gate was being shut, when it was dark, the men went out. Where the men went, I do not know. Pursue them quickly, for perhaps you may overtake them." But she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them with the stalks, stalks of flax, which she had laid in order on the roof. Then the men pursued them by the road to the Jordan, to the fords. And as soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate. Now, therefore, they lay down. So now, before, excuse me, now before they lay down, and she came up to them on the roof and sent to the men, "I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and on all the inhabitants of the land. They are faint-hearted because of you, for we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the other side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. And as soon as we heard these things, our hearts melted, neither did they remain any more courage in anyone because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and earth beneath. Now, therefore, I beg you, swear to me by the Lord, since I've shown you kindness, that you will also show show kindness to my father's house and give me a true token, and spare my father, my brothers, and sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death." So the men answered her, "Our lives for yours, if none of you tell this business of ours, and it shall be when the Lord has given us this land that we will deal kindly and truly with you." Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was on the city wall. She dwelt on the wall, and she said to them, "Get to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you. Hide there three days until the pursuers have returned. Afterwards, you may go your way." So the men said to her, "We will be blameless of this oath of yours which you have made us swear, unless when we come into the land, you bind this line of scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you bring your father, your mother, your brother, and all your father's household to your own home. So it shall be that whoever goes outside the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we will be guiltless. And whoever is with you in the house, his blood should be on our head if a hand is laid on him. And if you tell this business of ours, and we'll be free from the oath which you made us swear." Then she said, "According to your words, so be it." She sent them away, and they departed, and she bound the scarlet cord in the window.
Let me pray, and we'll get into it. Heavenly Father, I thank You for this Word tonight. I ask though that You speak through Your servant to these magnificent sons and daughters of Yours. This would be a Word that would just bring transformation, life, faith, hope, meaning, and a breakthrough tonight. In Jesus' name, everybody said, Amen.
The title of my message tonight is, "The Scarlet Cord." The Scarlet Cord. I love this story because it's, it's, it's fun to read in church because it's awkward. It has a number of elements in it. The first element that I find in here is what I call the tension. The tension. You and I don't, you do very good with tension. God lives in in perfect tension. The Bible teaches us that before the throne of God, there is righteousness and justice. The Bible teaches us that there is mercy and truth. God has both of them. God, God, God is merciful, but He's also truth. God is righteousness, and He's also justice. The Bible teaches us that our God is the lion and the lamb. He's the lion and the lamb. There's a tension. Which one do I meet when I get to heaven? Or depends which one you accept or rejected down here. If you accepted the, the lamb down here, then He'll be waiting in heaven. But if you rejected the lamb, you're gonna meet the lion. So just say, "Meet the lamb." Just putting it out there. God, God, God is unlike men. Psychologists tell us that you and I are only capable of one dominant emotion at a time. That's why they suggest, don't go shopping when you're hungry, because all of a sudden, I'm putting tofu in my, my shopping cart in my trolley, and then I get home, and once I've eaten, I'm like, "What the heck was I thinking?" But when you're hungry, it's like everything looks good. Stuff that's expired, she, it's past, it doesn't matter. I'm happy, you know. And you'd put, so, so when our good, when we're not good, you know, don't, don't they say, you know, cool down before you send that email when somebody write the email when you're angry, then once you've written it, delete it, don't send it, because you'll regret it. Well, we're not, we're not good with tension. God is perfect. God is able to in judgment bring redemption. God, God is able to destroy the world with a flood and yet have Noah find grace and be saved. God is able to wipe out Sodom and Gomorrah and yet send rescue to Lot, his wife, and his children. God is able to hang on a cross for judgment and save the whole world. God is able to do both. God, God is able to live in attention. This is important for me because in this story, there's a tension. The tension is this: that we know that this city is the city of Jericho. For any of you that did Sunday school, Joshua fought the Battle of Jericho. Jericho, Jericho, Joshua fought the Battle of Jericho, and the walls came tumbling. So we know the walls are gonna come tumbling down. Here's the issue: Rahab's house is in the wall. The judgment of God is going to hit Jericho, and Rahab is in a precarious position. She's not just in a precarious position because her house is situated in the wall, but her lifestyle. The Bible teaches us here that this woman is a prostitute, that she's a madam, that she, she has a house of ill repute. The, the spies go and lodge in that house because, number one, there's lodging there, but number two, it's usually, it's usually a place where these people will try and make it as easy for men to find secrecy. Even though this report goes after the two Jewish men to his relax, have come in, and the report gets all the way to the king, but yet they lodge there. She asks these two men if, if she could be saved, but not just her, her mama, her papa, her brothers, and her sisters. If they could be saved. This intrigues me because right now, if I was honest with you, we moved from tension into truth. And the truth is that she doesn't deserve to be saved. She, she's a prostitute, which means that she violates any, any covenants that God has set in place. In fact, she exploits and capitalizes on the weaknesses of men and only promotes promiscuity. And so it's not like this, this young lady, well, you know, Rahab, she is the inventor of the polio vaccine. So therefore, it's not like she's the founder of Habitat for Humanity, or, you know, she built a center for children who can't read good and want to do other things good too. She doesn't, she doesn't, there's nothing going for her that merits her salvation. Now, let, let me go next level. God sends to Joshua's sins to spies. God, Joshua sends two spies. Two is the first number in the Bible through which multiplication can happen. Two is is symbolic of the Word of God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The second person of the Trinity is the Word. The reason it's the Word is because the Word is the agreement, is the Amen to the will of God. You will hear that, you know, well, you know, "If it's God's will," you know, "God willing." There is a theology that believes that everything that happens is God's will. I don't subscribe to that theology. I don't believe it because if you go into Genesis 1:2, you will find that there is the Holy Spirit is hovering over the face of the waters, and then Genesis 1:3, God says, "Let there be light," and light was. So God, God said, "Let there be light," and then light came. God said it, but before He said it, He willed it. But just because God willed it, the light didn't come. Just because He willed that there be light, the light didn't automatically turn up. It was only when the will of God was Amen, was echoed by the Word of God, did it happen. So, so two spies coming, they represent the Word of God, because the Word of God is always in agreement with the will of God. And so, so when the Word comes, she does this. She hides them. Psalm 119 says, "Your word have I hidden in my heart that I may not sin against You." We know it's, we know it's symbolic of the Word of God, because the king of Jericho is like the spirit of this age, like the spirit over this world that wants to drive out the Word of God. It hates the Word of God. Doesn't want it in our schools, doesn't want it in our colleges, doesn't want it in our communities, doesn't want it in our government, doesn't want it in our legislation. And so, "Bring out the two men. We want to take care of them. We want to kill them. We don't want them in this city," because the two men will fulfill, will carry the promise of God. But she, because she's received the two men, faith has risen up on the inside of her, and she has the audacity to ask. She has has the audacity to ask that that she is saved, that her daddy is saved, that her mama is saved, that her brothers, her sisters are all saved. So they give her a scarlet cord. I said, "All right, I'd say you tie this scarlet cord in the window that you led us out of, and it'll come to pass that when we come back, if you have that scarlet cord, bring your family into that house, and nothing will happen to them." So if we, if we were to cross over to Joshua chapter 5, the baby would see our Joshua chapter 6, excuse me, verse 5, we find that they are circling the walls of Jericho, and then they blow the trumpet, and the walls come down. As the walls come down, Joshua gives the command, "Each man go up and plunder the city." As they do that, Joshua continues, and he talks to that, one of these two spies. It says, "Now go into Rahab's house, bring out the harlot, let's bring her out, and everyone that's in her household." And the Bible says that, that Rahab, her mom, her dad, her brothers, and sisters are all rescued. This is incredible, and it's quite disturbing if you keep reading verse 6, because Joshua keeps referring to her as "Rahab the harlot." And I'm like, "God, I wish you would just quit it. We get it. We get it already." So here now is another level of truth. The truth is, I am Rahab. The truth is, we are all Rahab. The Bible says, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." You and I didn't get saved because we deserve it. You and I got saved because Jesus wanted it that way. We didn't deserve to get saved. Jesus came down 2,000 years ago and hung on a cross and made an exchange on that cross. He made an exchange where He took my sin upon Himself and gave me His righteousness. So I begin to see Him here, that, that, that I am Rahab. Not only that I am Rahab, but but Rahab has received the Word of God. What you do with the Word that you receive is important. Because you're only ever in one of two phases. You're either in a test, or you're in a trust with God. You're either in a test or in a trust. If God is trusting you, get ready because He's gonna test you to see whether He can trust you with more. And so He sends, He sends the spies, and she receives the spies. She receives you. She says, "You know what? I know God is giving you this land, and under that, your God is the true God. He's the God of heaven." And then she throws herself at the mercy. She says, "Please, when you come back, remember me. The God shown kindness to you, remember me, save me." Now, this is perplexing to me because she's saying, "Save my dad and my mom." So I'm like, "Hang on, whoa, whoa, whoa, timeout. How does a young girl end up in prostitution, and a mum and dad's good with that?" But you got to understand, she's in Jericho. She's not in Israel. She's in the spirit of this world, which, which exploits, which perverts. And I'm trying to think, you know, I've got a little ten-year-old daughter, and when she was two, when she was three, she loved all the Disney movies. And we had to watch Cinderella and Snow White and Beauty and the Irby. We had to watch them one after another. Little Mermaid. We were, we would watch them all. And she had every single, "Let it go, let it go." Like she had every single dress like Elsa. She had every single dress. And we would watch that, the Disney movie. And one of her favorites was Cinderella. And at the end, with Cinderella, she'd say, "Daddy, marry me," because she thought that dancing was because, you know, they were dancing and it was the wedding. So I would pick her up, because, you know, she was, and I would, you know, kind of spin and dance with her. And she just loved it. And twirl around and give her a kiss on the cheek and put it down. She goes, "Daddy, marry me again." And so, so we'd have to keep, you know, going back and and watching it over and over. My daughter, when she was a little, I'd say, "You know, what do you want to be?" "I want to be a princess." She wouldn't be a princess, she wanted to be a princess. I'm sure Rahab the harlot, when she was a little girl, didn't grow up saying, "I want to be someone that exploits." Something was very, very broken in this family. Something was very, very broken in this world.
Now, here's where it gets good. Come with me to the book of Matthew chapter 1. And we're about to land. Matthew chapter 1, verse 5. Matthew chapter 1, verse 5 says this. It says, "Salmon begat Boaz by Rahab. Boaz begat Obed by Ruth. Obed begat Jesse. Jesse begat David the king." One more time. "Salmon begat Boaz by Rahab. Boaz begat Obed by Ruth. Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David the king." I love this because it starts with the tension, it moves into the truth, but it finishes in triumph. See, the scarlet cord that she was asked to to tie into the window. Scarlet is all the way through your Bible. There are patterns that aren't accidents. Scarlet represents three things in scripture. It represents blood. It represents sacrifice. And represents suffering. Blood, sacrifice, suffering. It is a pointer to Jesus. It is a pointer to Jesus. It is also, it is also symbolic of the Passover lamb that had to be put on the lentils of the doorposts. When the judgment hits Jericho, and the walls of Jericho come down, the walls come down somehow because of the scarlet cord. Somehow Rahab's house is completely intact. With every single, every single person walks out unharmed. God saves Rahab. But watch this. He doesn't just save Rahab. Rahab gets married, and she marries a guy called Salmon. She marries Salmon. So it's interesting. I did a study on Salmon. Who is Salmon? I find out that Salmon was a prince in Judah. The girl whose life has become broken, and she's a woman of the night. God doesn't just save her from judgment. God doesn't just save her from destruction. He takes a little girl that probably once had a dream of being a princess, and God says, "This is how powerful my salvation is. I don't just save you, sweetheart, from judgment, but watch this. You're gonna marry the prince. You are gonna marry the Prince of the tribe of Judah." Because when you marry a prince, guess what that makes you? That makes you a princess. Now, watch this. The Bible says that because she marries Salmon, they have a child, and the name of their child is Obed. Anybody remember Obed from the Bible? Obed means servant. Obed begat Jesse. Jesse begat David the King. So God doesn't just save Rahab. He saves her. He delivers her from her past. He restores broken dreams. But then God so elevates that in just two generations, a king would come from her line. But not only then, thousands of years later, a carpenter's son would walk through the street, and a blind man would hear about this carpenter's son, and he would cry, "O Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" And the Son of David would pray for this blind man, and he would receive his sight. A seer, a Phoenician woman heard about Him, and her daughter is severely demon-possessed, and she comes and she says, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy. My daughter is severely." And the daughter gets delivered from the Son of David. God doesn't just save. God doesn't just heal. God doesn't just deliver. God doesn't just restore. But forever, throughout all eternity, Rahab is in this book. You know what she's in this book doing? She is in this book pointing to Jesus Christ, the Savior, the Savior, the Redeemer, the fulfillment of the scarlet cord. My question to you tonight is, do you have the scarlet cord hanging in your window? Because the scarlet cord speaks of suffering, sacrifice, and blood. Here's the deal. Here's the truth. If I try to get into heaven, the Bible teaches me that God is a righteous judge. Jesus is my defense attorney, and the devil is my accuser. He's my prosecutor. And the truth is, the truth is, when the devil says, "Father God, I want to present evidence in the court this day that this man here, Yurga Matthias, does not deserve to enter into the kingdom of God. Exhibit A." And the truth is, if I look at Exhibit A, I'm like, "I'll shoot, guilty." Then the devil goes, "Exhibit B, Exhibit C, Exhibit all the way to Exhibit Z." And then he starts with like hashtags and symbols, and I mean, it's just, and then it's like page after page after, and I'm like, "Oh man, I'm completely jacked." And everything he's saying is a hundred percent right. Everything he's saying is a hundred. And I'm gonna be like, "You know what, Father, I got a he, I was present, I did every single, every, every." He's a hundred percent right. I don't deserve. I like CSI, you know, there's a, there's a crime, some guy gets, you know, kills somebody, and it looks like he got away with it. He was wearing gloves, and he's got an alibi, and he reset the clocks, and you're like, "Man, has this guy ever, has justice ever gonna take place?" But then she scratches him behind the ear, and just under her nail, so they put it on a demon-living DNA match. DNA match. Now, here's the deal. The highest concentrate of DNA is in blood. Highest concentrate of DNA is in blood. On CSI, what they do when there's a crime, they put tape around it, and it's a crime scene, and it's cordoned off because they're going to take DNA samples. It's cordoned off because they don't want anybody to contaminate the crime scene. 2,000 years ago, the scarlet cord. 2,000 years ago, the fulfillment of the scarlet cord, Jesus Christ saw my case before God in heaven that I was think, that I was guilty of Exhibit A, Exhibit B, Exhibit C to Z and beyond. So what Jesus did was, He stepped across crime scene tape. He went in and He shed His blood all over my crime scene, over every single sin that I committed. Then Jesus says to the Father, "Father, the prosecution has presented its case, but Father, I want to produce some compelling evidence that if you examine the DNA, there was, there was present every single one of these sins. The DNA is my DNA, Your Honor. I'm the one who is guilty." And you need to understand. I'm like, "What? You weren't even there?" "No, no, all of these are mine." But the Father, when He examines the evidence, the DNA is overwhelming. It is a smoking gun. It is convincing. The man who is guilty for all my sin is Jesus. And Jesus takes the wrath, He takes the judgment, so that I can be free. But I got to tell you, for 33 years, I've been following Jesus. He didn't just save me and say, "Try harder." He saved me. The little dreams I had as a little boy, He began to restore. The dreams, the hopes that I had that I did not even believe. He began to do. He began to elevate. He began to set up. The same thing in this. He does with Rahab. He does with me. And God is no respecter of persons. If you will walk with Him, if you surrender your life to Him, if you'll let Him disciple you, if you make a decision, "I don't want to just come to church once, but I want to be a disciple, a follower of Jesus." I can tell you, He doesn't just save. He doesn't just heal. He doesn't just deliver. But He restores. He elevates. He promotes. He sets up. The best of your days are still in front of you. He is just that good. Come on, when you give God a great clap tonight! Come on, give God a shout tonight! How good is God? How good is God?
Would you close your eyes and bow your head? Maybe a here tonight, you've never surrendered to God. Maybe you've never heard the gospel preached like this. I was reading this story in my quiet time about three years ago, and then God said, "You're so upset about a word that you missed what I did." And then it began to show me this message, and I was on a plane, and I just began to weep and weep and weep at the goodness of God. I'm not sure where you're at tonight, but I got to tell you, God is so good. Jesus loves you so much. The scarlet cord is Jesus Christ, His blood, His sacrifice, He is suffering. If you're here tonight, you've never surrendered to Jesus, friend, tonight, would you surrender to Christ? If you hear and you once did surrender, but you know tonight you're away from God, you've backslidden, you've moved away, turned away, run away, and you need to come back, friend, tonight. If you're here tonight, you just not sure. You're like, "Man, I think I'm so, I think I'm going, but I'm not." Friend, you can be sure. I can lead you in a prayer tonight. You can know 100%, "I am saved. I am saved." Or maybe you're here tonight, and you're just like, "Oh God, I'm so far from You. I want to come back. I want to be close." If you're any one of those four categories of people, well, every head is bowed, every eye closed. Would you quickly raise your hand, and I'll see your hand, and I'm gonna pray for you tonight. Who are those ones? Quickly lift your hand up. Hi, thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Who else is there? Quickly, would you raise your hand? Thank you, darling. Up the back there, I see your hand. Who was there? Thank you, sweetie. I see your hand. Still somebody else? Who else is there? Quicker, would you lift your hand? I'd love to pray for you. We are out of time, but I want to pray. This is what we're going to do. I wanted to pray for people. Anybody that responded tonight personally and individually. But logistically for me to kind of climb down here and go up into the sides and into the middle here, it's just gonna be a logistical nightmare. So I'm gonna ask you to do something. I'm gonna ask you to meet me halfway. Kind of halfway. I'm actually gonna get down off this platform. I'm gonna stand down here on the ground, and then the band's gonna sing a song, and those of you that raised your hands, would you grab the person you're sitting with and ask them to come and walk with you and to be down here? But if you brought someone that raised their hand, say, "Hey, come on, I'll walk with you." Just, if you're sitting with someone that should have raised their hand, you can bring them. If you would have raised your hand, but I kind of rushed this thing, you can still come. If you raised your hand, or maybe you're not sitting with anyone, you still come because I'm gonna shake your hand, I'm gonna be your friend tonight, and I'm gonna pray for you.
