Have you ever made the same mistake more than once and thought, "Why don't I ever learn?" You might feel frustrated, discouraged, or even start questioning your intelligence or self-worth.
But what if I told you that your brain is actually designed to turn mistakes into learning? If you know how to work with it?
I'm Doctor Tracey Marks, a psychiatrist, and I make mental health education videos to help you strengthen your mind, fortify your brain, and build resilience. In our last video, we talked about what happens in your brain during a setback and how to regain forward momentum. Today, we're going a level deeper. We're looking at what happens when things go wrong because of something you did and how your brain can transform that into growth. If you know how to decode the signal.
This video is all about turning errors into insight. And I'll walk you through a technique called mental debugging. It's a simple process rooted in neuroscience that helps you extract the hidden lessons from your mistakes, and actually embed that lesson into your brain.
Let's start with talking about how your brain processes mistakes. When you make a mistake, your brain doesn't just shrug. It notices. And that's because your brain is constantly predicting what's going to happen next. Every action you take is based on an internal forecast: "If I do this, then this should happen." But when reality doesn't match the prediction, your brain registers a mismatch. And this is known as a prediction error.
That prediction error triggers your brain's learning system. First, there's a drop in dopamine. So mistakes can feel discouraging at first. But that drop is part of what gets your attention. It's your brain's way of saying, "Hey, this didn't go how we expected. Something needs adjusting." Think of it like your brain using a GPS. When you're using GPS, you make a wrong turn. It doesn't scold you. The system simply recalculates. Mistakes are that recalculation moment. Your brain reorders, orients, and looks for a better route.
This moment of conflict between expectation and reality creates an opportunity. If you stay open and reflective, your brain starts recalibrating, reshaping neural pathways to better align with the updated information. And that's how growth happens, not in the absence of mistakes, but through them. And this process is one of the most powerful drivers of neuroplasticity. In fact, many breakthroughs, personal or professional, come right after something didn't go as expected.
But that's not always how it plays out. So if your brain is wired to learn from mistakes, why do we often repeat them? The short answer is emotions get in the way. When a mistake triggers feelings like shame, anxiety, or frustration, those emotions hijack your brain's learning system. Your amygdala kicks into high alert, and your prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that helps you reflect and problem-solve, goes offline. You shift from learning mode into survival mode.
Another common block is avoidance. After a mistake, you might just want to move on and forget about it. And even though that can feel like relief in the moment, it skips the most important part of the learning process: reflection. Without that pause, your brain doesn't get a chance to extract the lesson.
There's also something called fixed mindset interference. That's a mouthful. If you believe your abilities are set, like you're either good at something or you're not, then a mistake feels like proof that you're not good enough. Your brain gets so busy protecting your self-image that it misses the learning opportunity altogether.
And then there's the repeat trap. You make the same error again and again, not because you're not trying to do better, but because you haven't figured out why it keeps happening in the first place. Your brain is stuck following the same old pattern because it hasn't been given better instructions.
The good news is this cycle isn't permanent. You can interrupt it. And that's exactly what the mental debugging process is designed to do. Mental debugging is a simple, structured way to pull out the lesson in any mistake before your brain starts spiraling into guilt or avoidance. It works a lot like how a developer troubleshoots broken code. Instead of just feeling bad that something went wrong, you slow down and trace what you were expecting and what actually happened and what needs to change.
There are four steps to this process.
Step one: What did I expect? Every mistake starts with a prediction. You had an idea of how things were supposed to go. Maybe that was a habit that you thought would be easy to maintain, or that someone would respond to you the way you imagined. But those expectations are often built on distorted thinking, like all-or-none beliefs, catastrophizing, or unrealistic standards. You may not even realize that you're operating under these assumptions unless they get disrupted. This step helps surface those hidden thought habits so that you can ask, "What was I expecting that wasn't actually reasonable or likely?"
Step two: What actually happened? This is where you stick to the facts without interpretation, judgment, or self-blame. What did you do? What was the outcome? What was said or not said? This gives your brain clean data to work with. And when you're prone to distorted thinking, getting grounded in specifics is often what disrupts the emotional overreaction.
Step three: What belief or behavior needs recalibrating? This is where the insight happens. You look at where your expectation didn't match reality and ask, "What was off in my thinking or approach?" Maybe the belief was distorted, like, "If I don't get this right the first time, I failed," or "They disagreed with me, so they must not respect me." Or maybe the strategy you used just wasn't realistic, like trying to build a new habit late at night when you're mentally drained. This step is about spotting those blind spots so that your brain can update the internal rulebook that it was using to make decisions.
Step four: What small shifts can I make the next time? Now that you've pinpointed the faulty belief or misaligned behavior, this is where you install the update. What would it look like to respond with a more flexible or realistic mindset? And this isn't about fixing everything all at once. It's about making one small, intentional change that your brain can actually practice. And this might mean rewarding a self-critical thought, adjusting the timing of a routine that wasn't working for you, or trying a different way to handle something that keeps tripping you up.
Now, let me walk you through how this might look in real life. Let's say you lost your cool at work, and I'm not talking about just snapping at somebody, like you really lost it and made a fool out of yourself in front of a whole bunch of people. Later, you're embarrassed and you keep replaying the moment. Instead of spiraling, you decide to debug it.
So the first step: What did I expect? You expected your colleague to go along with your idea, or at least not challenge you publicly. Underneath that, maybe you were operating with the assumption that agreement means respect and disagreement means rejection.
Step two: What actually happened? They pushed back strongly in front of the group. You felt caught off guard, got defensive, and your reaction escalated quickly. Now you're left feeling ashamed and unsure of how others perceive you.
Step three: What belief or behavior needs recalibrating? Here's the disconnect: your brain interpreted disagreement as a threat to your status or credibility. But when you look at it more closely, the belief that "if someone disagrees with me, they don't respect me" doesn't hold up. It's a distortion, specifically emotional reasoning and personalization. You were taking their pushback as an attack when really it was just a difference of opinion in a collaborative setting.
Step four: What small shift can I make the next time? Next time, instead of reacting from a place of perceived threat, you practice pausing and asking a clarifying question like, "Can you walk me through how you're seeing this?" It's a small shift, but one that gives your prefrontal cortex a chance to stay online and keep the conversation constructive. That's how you move from emotional reactivity to reflective adjustment. And the more often you walk through this process, even briefly, the more your brain learns to respond instead of react.
So why does this actually work from a brain science standpoint? First, you're interrupting the emotional hijack. The act of labeling what happened and naming your expectation engages the prefrontal cortex. That alone reduces amygdala reactivity and gives you access to clearer thinking. Second, you're practicing what's called cognitive flexibility. This is the ability to shift mental gears to update a belief or behavior based on new information. People with high cognitive flexibility tend to be more resilient because they adapt faster when things don't go as planned. And third, when you apply a small shift, especially one that you can repeat, you strengthen new neural pathways. The more you reflect and adjust, the more your brain learns to treat mistakes not as threats, but as feedback. It rewires the emotional tone around the error.
So now you've debugged the mistake and identified a new approach. But how do you make sure it sticks? This is where narrative reframing and behavioral rehearsal come in. Narrative reframing means changing the story that you tell yourself. Instead of saying, "I failed again," you say, "I ran a test and I got useful data." The shift might seem subtle, but it changes how your brain encodes the memory. One of the best ways to reframe a mistake is to write it down, not just what happened, but what you learned. And this kind of journaling builds metacognition, which is your ability to reflect on your own thinking. That, in turn, strengthens self-awareness and resilience.

The second part of getting this to stick is behavioral rehearsal. This means imagining or practicing the new response that you want to have. Remember the example where you lost your cool? Rehearsing a calm response ahead of time makes it easier to access that behavior when the moment comes. The more vividly you rehearse it, the more your brain treats it like a real experience. And this is the same technique that athletes use when visualizing high-pressure performance. It builds the mental muscle memory before the next challenge arises.
So here's the takeaway. Mistakes are not signs that you're broken. They're not evidence that you're doomed to repeat the same patterns of behavior forever. They're signals, coded messages from your brain that something didn't match your internal map. And if you decode that message with curiosity and structure, you don't just recover from the mistake. You can grow because of it. You develop adaptive resilience, the kind that makes you wiser with each misstep, not more self-critical.
