What's up, mga kaguro at mga mag-aaral?

By the end of this lesson, hindi lang kayo basta may alam, dapat may direction.

Before we start with our discussion, the teacher may implement this proactivity in their classroom: role-playing. We have here career role-play out scenarios from different professions, for example, teacher, engineer, chef, to understand their responsibilities.

Now, let's discuss first the higher education pathways. Bakit nga ba mahalaga ang higher education? Higher education is not just about getting a diploma. It's about building skills, confidence, and direction sa buhay.

What are higher education pathways? And that's okay.

First, we have academic pathways. These are traditional roots focused on theoretical knowledge and academic disciplines.

We also have undergraduate degrees. Undergraduate degrees include associate degree, for example, associate of arts or associate of science, usually 2 years at a community or technical college. Al sa bachelor's degree, for example, um bachelors of accountancy, bachelor of education, usually 3 to 4 years at a university or college. Associate degrees are shorter, pang-jump start.

We also have graduate degrees. We have master's degree, for example, master of arts, master of business administration, master of education, master of arts and nursing, 1 to 2 years after a bachelor's degree. And we also have doctoral degree, for example, doctor of philosophy, doctor of education, etc., 3 to 7 years naman ito after a master's or directly after a bachelor in some systems. Graduate studies are for specialization and leadership. Usually kinukuha ito kapag may work experience na at gusto mong mag-level up sa field mo.

And we also have vocational or technical pathways. These are focused on practical skills and job-specific trainings. We have certificates and diplomas, often 6 months to 2 years in technical schools or community colleges. Apprenticeship, work-based learning with classroom instruction and skilled trains and trains. Similar to apprenticeship but often shorter and less technical. Kung mas gusto mo ang hands-on at mabilis pumasok sa trabaho, vocational pathways might be for you. Kung hands-on learner ka, this pathway might be for you.

Also have pathway or foundation programs. Hindi pasado agad. Okay lang. This programs exist para tulungan kang mag-catch up. Hindi ito delay. Preparation ito. This is designed for students who don't need direct entry requirements. We have university foundation year, one-year programs preparing students for undergraduate studies. We also have English language pathways for international students who need to improve their language skills before starting a degree. And bridging courses, short programs help students meet academic prerequisites.

Next, we have transfer pathways. This allows students to begin their studies at one institution and complete their degree at another. We have here 2+2 programs. Start with an associate degree at a community college, then transfer to a university for the final 2 years. And we also have articulation agreements, formal partnerships between institutions that simplify credit transfer.

We also have online and distance learning pathways. Microcredentials are great kung gusto mong mag-upskill habang nagtatrabaho. These are flexible remote learning options available full-time or part-time. We have MOOCs or massive open online courses which are free or low-cost courses. Some offer credentials. We also have microcredentials, short programs or courses that offer a targeted, focused approach to learning a specific skill. These are designed to provide practical, indem skills that can be applied immediately in the workplace or specific professional context. We also have online degrees. These are fully accredited programs available remotely and blended learning, mix of online and on-campus instructions.

We also have alternative pathways. May skill ka na from work or life experience? Hindi sayang iyan. Some schools actually recognize what you already know. This allow entry or credit based on life experience, work experience, or informal learning. We have portfolio assessment, demonstrating knowledge through a portfolio of work. Credit for work experience. Some institutions grant academic credit for relevant job experience. And of course, 'yun nga 'yung recognition of prior learning (RPL).

And we also have specialized pathways. These are tailored for specific student groups or career goals. Ito 'yung para sa may very clear goals like medicine, law, or research. Challenging pero rewarding. We have honor programs for high-achieving undergraduates, often involving research. Dual degrees or double majors, earning 2 degrees simultaneously. Accelerated programs, faster completion, for example, 3-year bachelor's, combine BA or MA, or professional programs for careers like medicine, law, or education.

Just remember, pathways are not always linear. You can change major, transfer school, or stock credentials. Many students change major, transfer institutions, or return to education after working. Or stock credentials, for example, certificate, then diploma, then degree.

Next, we discuss the higher education modalities. What are learning modalities?

First, we have face-to-face learning. This includes activities that focus on in-person interaction and immediate feedback. This includes lectures and discussion or live classroom teaching with question and answer. Group work, which includes collaborative projects, case studies, or role plays. Laboratory or hands-on work, which includes experiments, simulations, or workshops. And seatwork and written exams, which includes quizzes, tests, reflection papers. Field trips or immersion, which includes community visits or industry exposure.

Online learning. Online learning includes activities that rely on technology and virtual platforms. Flexible pero kailangan ng self-discipline. Perfect sa independent learners, which includes synchronous sessions, live video lectures, breakout group discussions, and asynchronous tasks, recorded lectures, self-paced modules. We also have online discussion boards, which includes forums, blogs, and peer feedback. Digital assessments, which includes online quizzes, e-portfolios, and project submissions. And virtual labs and simulations, which include software-based experiments and case scenarios.

We also have here the activities that combine the best of both worlds. Best of both worlds ibig sabihin may flexibility pero may face-to-face support. Examples of these are flipped classrooms, where students review content online then apply it in class. We also have online-enhanced lectures, pre-class digital modules plus in-class problem-solving. We also have hybrid group work. Some group members collaborate online while others attend in-person. We also have case studies or projects, partly research online, partly presented face-to-face. And mixed assessment, when which includes online quizzes plus classroom presentations.

We have distance or modular learning. This is self-paced. Print or digital modules are distributed. Activities focus on independent study and self-directed tasks. This includes module-based readings and exercises, which includes worksheets and guided questions. Self-assessment quizzes, which includes practice tests within modules. Portfolio development or compilation of outputs and reflections. Research-applied projects, which are community-based or workplace-based tasks. And regular check-ins via SMS, phone calls, or occupational consultation. And now online, 'di ba? Minsan din naman. Okay.

Lastly, we have financing options. Why this matters? Education is an investment, kaya kailangan pag-isipan. Hindi minamadali. Financing matters because of rising costs of tuition, books, and living expenses. We also consider the impact of financial decisions on long-term goals, importance of planning early, and major financing options.

First, uh help to the students are the scholarships. Scholarships are merit-based financial aid that doesn't require repayment. We can get scholarships from schools, government, private organizations. For example, academic, athletic, artistic, and community service scholarships. Kung may talento o mataas na grades, grab this opportunity.

Wills of grants. These are needs-based aid that also doesn't require repayment. For example, we have government, which includes the CHED, UniFAST, and NGOs. Example of these are Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES), Student Financial Assistance Program (StuFAPs). Okay, let me share nung ako ay college, then naging grante rin ako ng StuFAP ng CHED. And I'm still very grateful to our uh government agency, uh specifically CHED, which uh serve as a big help nung ako ay nagka-college.

Borrowed money that must be repaid with interest. We have government loans, for example, GSIS or SSS, private bank loans. And the consideration for this is interest rate, repayment terms, and grace periods. Helpful pero may responsibility. Dapat planado ang pagbabayad. Usually 'yung mga parents nag-a-avail nito, and also 'yung mga ah mga government employees na bibigyan sila ng chance para ma-apply 'yung kanilang anak sa student loans.

Work-study program. This includes part-time jobs offered to students to help pay for education. The benefits include income plus experience. Examples of these are campus jobs, ba may mga student assistants na ah nag-a-assist sila sa mga school activities o kaya sa mga offices, and then in return, they are given financial aid for their school fees. Internships with stipends also included in this program. Kung gusto mong makatulong sa gastusin habang nag-aaral, work-study is a smart option.

Sa personal and family support, of course, ito naman talaga 'yung first and foremost na tutulong sa school financing, using personal or family resources to fund education. So, it includes saving early, budgeting, and financial planning. Mahalaga ang usapan sa pamilya tungkol dito. Team effort kasi ang education.

So, that's our discussion. Now, uh punta na tayo sa mga activities and assessment.

Activity 1: My Learning, My Way. So, answer the following question and write a reflection on the various modalities that you encountered throughout the pandemic.

Activity 2: My College Game Plan. Choosing My Course and Funding It. So, students will create a personal college plan that includes their chosen specialization or college course, a list of possible schools or institutions offering the course, estimated cost, two financing options, and a brief discussion or justification of their choices. So, to make it more concrete, let me give you the steps that you can follow this activity.

Step 1: Research and Planning. So, you will be given 15 to 20 minutes to do this. So, each student will choose a college or course specialization that aligns with their interests and current goals. Then, identify two colleges, universities, or tivet institutions that offer the course that you have selected. Research the estimated tuition and fees, including enrollment fees, books and materials, transportation, boarding, if applicable. Identify at least two financing options they can consider, such as government programs, for example, CHED scholarships, TES, UniFAST, or Tulong Dunong. Private scholarships, partner jobs, student loans, or family support or savings.

Then, Step 2: Output Creation. You will be given again 15 to 20 minutes to finish this uh part. Students will present their research as a visual or written output. You may use a poster, a slide presentation if digital, or recorded version. You may also do a written report or planner-style worksheet. The required sections for your report are the following: First, my chosen specialization, why I chose this course, school options plus estimated cost. How I plan to finance my education. And of course, hindi mawawala, may backup plan.

Then, Step 3: Sharing (Optional Activity, 10 minutes). Select students may present their plan to the class. Peer feedback or gallery walk for students to explore different plans and options. You will be needing here internet or printed materials for research, pen and paper, digital tools, calculator for cost estimation. So, your output will be created according to course and specialization alignment (5 points). Accuracy of school cost research (5 points). Relevance of financing options (5 points). Clarity and presentation of plan (5 points). Reflection and justification (5 points), for a total of 25 points.
