Stop Missing Easy Shots: The 5-Minute Consistency Fix

Feeling like your swings are too big or you're struggling a little bit with that repeatability. Often times when we come from other sports, we have these big motions that take away our power in pickle ball. We're going to be talking about this push through concept that really simplifies things so you can do less to get more out of your game.

All right, we are here with Chelsea. Tell us a little bit about your background and some of your pain points in your pickleball game.

Yeah. So, I've been playing pickball a few years, but I don't have tennis experience. The sport I come from is baseball. So, I feel like I'm [music] good at defense and I can get low and I really like I can get to any ball. That's kind of fun for me. But sometimes I struggle to do what next? Like, what do I do next? Once I dig the ball, then what?

>> And so, it sounds like you're getting to the ball and now we're going to have some more intentionality. So we can really push that advantage because of your speed and your ability to get there. And now we can start putting our opponents in uncomfortable positions. [snorts]

So the three things that we're going to kind of think about on these shots are one is staying grounded with our lower body. So if we think about in baseball kind of you catch it and you have this hop, but then when you're throwing the ball we're balanced. [music] So we want to take away this little hop in that kind of whole like thought process. So, we're hopping to get to the ball and then we're pushing through it is going to be kind of the thought here. So, this is what engages that push through. Feeling grounded with those legs.

Second thing is our shoulders. We want to keep these shoulders down. The moment they pop up, this is kind of adding an extra variable. If we keep these down, we can really keep our energy going towards our target.

And then the third thing is really just like extending and keeping our ch our head down until our shoulder hits our chin. So it's just this really simple like move finish and then look up. So we're really simplifying what we're trying to do with this ball. If we can take away this back swing here, then we're getting this consistently like consistent contact point that you're hitting all these the same. And then when we focus on this push through, now you're going to be able to really place this ball.

So the goal of what we're doing here is to create a more precise shot. So it's taking that from aiming here like we're going to aim in the middle of this box here towards the back to now we're going to aim right over here. And so we're just adding that level of placement the more we take away from this back swing and just push forward through the shot.

Wait. That I love that one. Wait. Love that. Wait. Nice. That one was awesome. Nice. Nice. That's a really good call out. Keeping it within your sight is a really good way to take away that back swing. And the more we take away that back swing, the more consistent we are on that contact point. So, that was looking really good with this push through.

A lot of times players take these big back swings or try and swipe at this ball. So the more that we can simplify it as we saw there, it just creates this consistency that really allows us to be precise and dominate on that court.
