What then is thought? Do you understand my question? If time and thought are the roots of fear – and indeed they are in reality – what is thought? Why do we live, act, and do all our deeds relying on rational foundations? The amazing cathedrals of Europe, their beauty, their construction, their architecture: all of this was put in place by thought. All religions, their instruments and their attire, all of those medieval clothes, were put in place by thought. All these rituals, reason put them in place or conspired with them. And in our relationships with each other, man and woman; this relationship is based on thought. When you drive a car, you rely on thought. The process of discernment, and all of this, it is thought. So one must examine, if you are not yet tired – and we will finish after we explore the question – what is thought? Most likely, no one has asked this question. Very few ask it. We have been asking this question for sixty years. What is thought? So if we can find what the source, the beginning is, why thought has become so important in our lives; then in this very examination, and for it to happen, a radical transformation may occur. We ask, then, what is thought, what is thinking? Do not expect an answer from me. Look into the question, observe. Thought is the word; and the word is important: the sound of the word, the quality of the word, the depth and beauty of the word. But especially the sound. I will not go into the matter of sound and silence now; we may speak about that tomorrow. Thought is part of memory, isn't it? Search with the speaker, please, do not sit in your seats comfortably, or resentfully. Thought is part of memory, isn't it? If you had no memory at all, would you be able to think? Of course not. Our brain is a tool used by memory, the memory of things that have happened, our experiences and the like, and the entire background of memory. Memory, however, comes from knowledge, from our experiences, doesn't it? So, experience, knowledge, memory, and the response of memory, this is thought. This whole process: we undergo experiences, we gather them, and we store them, which becomes our knowledge. Experience, however, is always limited, naturally. Because – this is another complex matter, because... ah, everything is complex. [Laughter] Is experience different from the one who experiences? Dedicate your minds to the matter, clarify. And if the one who experiences is absent, is there experience? Of course not. So, experience and the experiencer are the same. Like the observer and what is observed: the thinker is not separate from his thoughts. The thinker is the thought. Experience is therefore limited. As you observe in the scientific world or in any other world. They add more and more and more every day; they add to their knowledge through experience, experiments on animals, and all that horror they endure. And that knowledge is limited, they are constantly adding to it. So, memory is limited. And from memory, thought is limited. And thus, because thought is limited, it will always bring conflict. Just look at this pattern. Do not accept anything the speaker says, otherwise you would be foolish. The speaker is not an authority, nor a revered and respected person, thank God. But if we can observe this truth, together, that thought and time are the roots of fear. Time and thought are the same, not two separate movements. When you see this truth, as a reality, that time and thought are the roots of fear; think time – just observe it within yourselves, do not stray from this truth and this reality. Fear is caused by time and thought; stand there, stay with this reality, do not escape from it, do not analyze it logically, it is so, and then it is as if you are holding a precious jewel in your hands. You see the beauty of this jewel. And then you will see for yourself that psychological fear ends completely. And when fear is absent, you are free. And when complete freedom exists, you will have no gods or rituals, you are a free human being.
