Have you ever wondered if something invisible might be draining your energy, clouding your mind, or even stealing years from your life? Heavy metal toxicity might be that hidden culprit. Studies show over 50% of Americans carry a combination of heavy metals: lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic silently accumulating from sources we encounter every day. Our food, water, and even cosmetics.

Today, we'll uncover how these metals affect our health, why they're so dangerous, and most importantly, how you can avoid them in common everyday items. If you've been struggling with unexplained fatigue, brain fog, or stubborn health issues, this is the episode that might be the key for unlocking your vitality. I'm Dr. Hillary Lynn, a longevity physician, and in this episode, we're diving into a surprisingly common yet overlooked topic, heavy metal toxicity.

The tricky part about heavy metals is that their effects can be subtle and often mimic other health issues, making them easy to miss. Despite how common the issue is, it's something we rarely think about or test for. I know as a primary care physician for many years, it was not common and I often had to fight to get heavy metal poisoning for my patients. Now, as a longevity physician, it's something I commonly screen for. But the impact these metals have on our energy, cognitive health, and overall well-being can be profound.

So, what are heavy metals and why should we be concerned about them? Heavy metals are elements with a high atomic weight and density, which makes them persistent in the environment and prone to accumulating in our bodies over time. So, they're found in everyday sources, even our air, our water, our food, and cosmetics. While some metals like copper and zinc are beneficial in trace amounts, others like mercury, lead, cadmium, and arsenic can be toxic. Modern lifestyles have increased our exposure to these toxic metals, putting us at risk for various health issues from chronic fatigue to cognitive decline.

I care so much about this topic because it impacts many people, one and two, and it even impacted me. Yes, even as a doctor working in longevity, I had to learn the hard way to recognize the signs and I had to get screened because I couldn't feel those subtle symptoms. Many people spend years grappling with mysterious symptoms before discovering the root cause. So, I want to empower you to recognize those symptoms and protect yourself effectively.

So, heavy metals might sound really foreign and bizarre, but their effects are very real and can impact every aspect of our health. So, let's dive into what these toxic metals do to our bodies and how they impact each aspect of our cells.

In the short term, heavy metals like lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic can cause symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, headaches, digestive issues, and joint pain. Issues we often dismiss as stress or normal parts of life. But over time, these metals do more than inconvenience us. They contribute to serious chronic health problems. For example, lead exposure is linked to cardiovascular issues such as hypertension, high blood pressure, and increased risk of stroke. While mercury can disrupt our neurological health, potentially increasing the risk of neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

Heavy metals profoundly impact our energy by disrupting mitochondrial function. So mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells. They are responsible for producing energy in the form of ATP. And metals like mercury, copper and cadmium interfere with the mitochondrial processes by impairing with something called the electron transport chain reducing ATP production and increasing harmful reactive oxygen species. This leads to oxidative stress and prevents mitochondria from functioning properly, resulting in chronic fatigue that doesn't resolve with rest. Imagine always running on half battery, never fully recharging. That's what heavy metal toxicity feels like for many individuals.

Cadmium, for instance, inhibits mitochondrial respiration, which means it blocks the ability of mitochondria to effectively generate energy. So, this leads to oxidative stress. This is a condition where harmful free radicals accumulate, damaging cells and making the mitochondrial membrane leaky. This prevents mitochondria from maintaining proper energy production. It's almost like turning the heater on but then opening the windows and this ultimately contributes to cell death. Mercury can disrupt mitochondrial function as well leading to significant impairment in energy production. It impairs it by inhibiting the mitochondrial enzyme complexes which are also crucial for ATP synthesis and increases oxidative damage. And copper while essential in trace amounts becomes toxic when accumulated in excess also impairing mitochondrial respiration and contributing to oxidative stress. This is why no doctor will typically tell you to supplement with trace metals like copper. You can get it from the environment and from your foods.

Heavy metals also trigger that oxidative stress I spoke about. And this is a cellular level damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can harm cells, proteins, and DNA. Free radicals are naturally produced and helpful for normal cellular metabolism. But heavy metals like lead, cm, mercury, and arsenic can cause an overproduction of these molecules leading to widespread cellular damage. It's almost like using pepper spray, which you want to use against your enemies, but if you use way too much, it harms nearby people. So in the same way if you have way too many free radicals that can damage healthy parts of your body. This oxidative stress leads to lipid peroxidation, which is damage to cell membranes, protein oxidation, which is alteration of protein structures, and DNA damage, which all contribute to accelerated aging and increased risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and neurodegenerative disorders. Lead and cadmium have been shown to elevate levels of those reactive oxygen species leading to significant oxidative damage. Mercury similarly also generates RO contributing to that oxidative damage as well as damaging normal cellular processes overall. So all of this cumulative effect of oxidative stress from heavy metals is not just immediate cell damage but also long-term health consequences such as increased inflammation and cellular aging.

Speaking of inflammation, heavy metals activate inflammatory pathways directly, and this causes chronic inflammation that can change our tissues and our body's health over time. Chronic inflammation is like a low-grade fire that never gets extinguished, wearing down the body and increasing the risk of immune-related diseases, accelerated aging, and other chronic health issues. Heavy metals such as lead, cadmia, mercury, and arsenic alter cytokine metabolism. So cytokines are proteins that act as messengers in the immune system and when they're thrown off balance it leads to systemic inflammation. For example, lead exposure disrupts the balance of interleukins like IL6, IL1 beta, and TNF alpha, which are those signaling molecules, and this leads to prolonged inflammation. Cadmium also increases the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines triggering a continuous cycle of tissue damage and immune dysregulation. Mercury affects inflammasome activation. This is a key part of your immune response leading to altered cytokine production and an overactive immune response.

And heavy metals don't just harm our cells. They actually can change how our very DNA functions. They actually can change how our genes function without altering the DNA itself. This is called epigenetic modification and it can influence how genes are switched on or off affecting our health in both subtle and significant ways. Epigenetics refers to modifications that affect gene expression without changing the underlying DNA sequence. Lead exposure can alter DNA methylation, which is a process that controls gene activity. Improper DNA methylation can silence genes that help protect against diseases or activate genes that contribute to health problems. For example, changes in DNA methylation caused by lead have been linked to reduced cognitive function and behavioral issues, particularly in children because their brains are still developing. So it's a really delicate time. Mercury can alter histone modifications. These are proteins that help organize and package DNA. If you imagine DNA as thread, histones are like the spool so that you wrap the DNA around them. And it's very important to organize them well. This affects genes that regulate inflammation and stress responses. And the changes can keep the body in this heightened stress state and lead to issues like anxiety, depression, and heart disease over time. Nickel and chromium also induce epigenetic changes that disrupt normal cellular functions, leaving us vulnerable to immune dysfunction, chronic disease, and even cancer.

Even more concerning, these epigenetic changes may be heritable. So, they're not just affecting you, they can affect your children, your children's children, and so on so forth. So, imagine inheriting not just eye color and hair color, but a predisposition for chronic health conditions due to a grandparent or great-grandparents exposure to toxic metals. Epigenetic changes are like dimmer switches for our genes. Depending on our environment, these switches are turned up or down, impacting our health in powerful ways. So, heavy metal exposure disrupts these switches, leading to health problems that might not appear immediately, but can have lasting effects for both ourselves and even future generations.

Now that we understand how heavy metals affect us at a cellular level, let's explore the diseases they cause. Heavy metal toxicity isn't just a subtle drag on your energy. Over time, it leads to serious health issues affecting nearly every system in your body.

Heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and arsenic create a hostile environment for your cardiovascular system by generating oxidative stress and inflammation as we mentioned. So these metals damage the endothelial cells, which are the cells that line your blood vessels on the side where blood appears, and causes endothelial dysfunction. Think of your arteries as flexible well-paved roads. Heavy metals cause potholes and rigidness leading to hypertension, that's increased blood pressure, as well as increased plaque formation, that's the stuff that we worry about with heart disease. And over time, this damage increases your risk of atherosclerosis, heart attacks, and strokes. Lead exposure has also been strongly linked to elevated blood pressure. And the persistent inflammation caused by lead makes our heart work harder and eventually weakens it. So, it's not the good kind of working hard like when we exercise. That's hormesis or a controlled level of a challenge or stress for your heart and body. When you have something like lead exposure, it's in your body constantly and it's elevating your blood pressure for the long term and that makes your body actually weaker.

Cadmium, which is often found in cigarette smoke and certain foods, contributes not only to endothelial dysfunction but also directly affects the heart by inducing fibrosis or scarring of the heart's tissue. This scarring restricts our heart's ability to pump effectively, increasing the risk of heart failure. Meanwhile, mercury impairs antioxidant defenses and affects the endothelium, promoting coronary artery disease or heart disease. This is not just a theory. The American Heart Association has identified heavy metal exposure as a significant but preventable contributor to cardiovascular disease.

In addition to direct damage, heavy metals also disrupt lipid metabolism, meaning they affect how your body processes cholesterols, lipids, and fats. For example, arsenic increases platelet aggregation, making your blood more likely to clot while decreasing your body's ability to dissolve these clots, setting the stage for dangerous events like clots in your lung or even heart attacks and strokes.

Heavy metals like lead, mercury, and cadmium are particularly damaging to your nervous system. They can cross that blood-brain barrier, which is a protective wall that keeps harmful substances in your bloodstream out of your brain. And that crossing of the blood-brain barrier can lead to long-term neurological damage. Lead exposure has been linked to cognitive decline, particularly affecting areas related to memory, attention, and executive function. In children, lead exposure is associated with ADHD and reduced IQ, showing just how sensitive developing brains are to these toxins. For adults, mercury exposure is especially concerning because of its link to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. So again, mercury creates those reactive oxygen species and those can attack neurons and damage the delicate synaptic connections needed for memory and learning. Think of it as rust slowly eating away at the intricate wiring of your brain. This oxidative damage impairs your neurons' ability to communicate effectively, leading to tremors, memory issues, and eventually the more severe symptoms associated with these diseases.

Cadmium also plays a role in disrupting the brain's internal balance. It interferes with calcium signaling, which is crucial for memory and neuronal function. It also affects astrocytes, which are the supportive cells in the brain, and contributes to neuroinflammation. Neuroinflammation is essentially that fire going on in your brain and it doesn't get put out and leads to chronic issues that can manifest as brain fog, anxiety, or even full-blown cognitive decline.

Now let's talk about our kidneys. These are valuable filters in our body. We've got two of them and they filter out waste which goes out with your urine. They're very delicate and especially vulnerable to heavy metal damage. Cadmium and lead accumulate in the proximal tubules, which are responsible for reabsorbing nutrients after filtration. Over time, this buildup causes tubular dysfunction. That's where the tubules in your kidney start to malfunction and the kidneys lose the ability to properly reabsorb nutrients and filter out the toxins. So basically, it stops being able to do its job. Chronic exposure leads to chronic kidney disease, CKD, which is a silent but deadly condition that often isn't noticed until significant damage has already been done. Symptoms like fatigue, swelling, and high blood pressure often go overlooked and misattributed to other conditions. But when kidney function declines to a critical level, you might even need dialysis or even a kidney transplant. Lead exposure exacerbates this decline through oxidative stress, damaging those kidney cells directly and causing the progressive loss of function.

Your liver, the body's primary detox organ, also takes a significant hit from heavy metal exposure. So again, lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury induce hepatotoxicity, which is a fancy word for liver damage. But what does that mean for you? It means that your liver's ability to detoxify is compromised, allowing the toxins to build up, which further contributes to systemic inflammation and oxidative stress. Cadmium is notorious for promoting liver fibrosis. It scars the liver tissue and that can progress to full-blown cirrhosis and liver failure. Arsenic disrupts cellular structures in the liver cells, impairing detoxification and even contributing to liver cancer. The liver is densely packed with those mitochondria we spoke of and the heavy metals disrupting the mitochondrial function and impairing ATP production increasing that ROS production sets off a vicious cycle of damage in the liver as well. The inflammation in the liver can also become chronic. So heavy metals activate inflammatory pathways like NF-kappa B and NLRP3 inflammasome leading to the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF alpha and IL1 beta. And this kind of inflammation leads to conditions like NASH or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. We call it fatty liver disease nowadays because most of the time it's due to increased levels of fat. And if this is left unchecked, this progresses to cirrhosis and even cancer.

So we spoke of the immune system to some extent. But I also wanted to mention that when heavy metals impact with cytokine production, it makes your immune system become sluggish or overactive, leaving you more vulnerable to infections or autoimmune diseases. Cadmium, for example, will contribute to the apoptosis of immune cells, particularly lymphocytes, which are white blood cells essential for mounting an effective immune response. So your immune system is therefore left with fewer defenders, making infections much more likely. And cadmium exposure also increases the risk of autoimmune diseases. Conditions where your immune system accidentally attacks your own body leading to chronic inflammation that can severely impact your quality of life. Smokers who are exposed to cadmium a lot through the cigarettes end up having a lot of trouble with infections and sometimes autoimmune disease. Not only because of the direct toxin itself, but also because of the heavy metals found in cigarettes.

Heavy metals also have a significant impact on a topic we all care about, our reproductive health. Lead, cadmium, and mercury are endocrine disruptors. So that means they interfere with hormone production and function. In men, lead exposure leads to reduced fertility, affecting sperm quality and count. Cadmium disrupts hormonal balance, affecting testosterone levels and leading to sperm abnormalities. For women, lead exposure can lead to menstrual irregularities and reduced fertility. And cadmium is particularly concerning because it can cross that placenta, exposing developing fetuses to toxins that can lead to birth defects or developmental issues. Mercury has been linked to infertility in both men and women, affecting everything from sperm motility to menstrual cycle regularity. So these heavy metals can cause problems not only for our current health, but also as we mentioned with epigenetic changes, the health of future generations.

It's probably no surprise to you, but heavy metals can also cause cancer. They are carcinogens. The heavy metals initiate cancer development through oxidative stress by damaging DNA and proteins and lipids. And this damage increases the risk of mutations that can lead to uncontrolled cell growth. So for instance, cadmium interferes with DNA repair processes, preventing the body from correcting the damage caused by free radicals. And we mentioned epigenetic changes before. So the DNA methylation and histone modifications are common with heavy metals and that can lead to tumor suppressors being switched off and those that promote cancer growth getting switched on. Chronic inflammation triggered by metals creates this ideal environment for cancer cells to thrive. So heavy metals hijack that cellular communication and pushes cells into unchecked proliferation. Specific cancers linked to heavy metal exposure include gastric cancer or stomach cancer, often linked to arsenic exposure, and bladder cancer, which is linked to cadmium and arsenic. So, that's why smokers are linked to having bladder cancer more frequently. The list doesn't stop there. Lung cancer, liver cancer, and prostate cancers have also all been linked to heavy metal exposure, underscoring how widespread their effects can be.

Finally, the heavy metals impact our mental health as well. Studies link metals like cadmium, lead, and antimony to depression and anxiety. Cadmium exposure in particular has been associated with increased rates of depression, particularly in people with a higher BMI, likely due to compounding oxidative stress and inflammation. Heavy metals also disrupt neurotransmitter function by damaging our neurons and altering neurotransmitter balance. This leads to lower levels of serotonin and dopamine, which regulate our mood. And this disruption can lead to depression, anxiety, and chronic fatigue. Sleep quality also suffers as heavy metals like lead will affect your sleep cycle, contributing to a vicious cycle of mood disturbances and mental health challenges. The good news is physical activity can actually counteract the effects of heavy metal exposure. So, exercise has been shown to boost antioxidant defenses and reduce inflammation, helping to mitigate the mental health impact of these toxic metals.

And of course, we wouldn't be here on the longevity show if we didn't talk about heavy metals and how they accelerate aging. So, heavy metals induce oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, which leads to faster telomere shortening. Telomeres are the protective caps on our DNA, and when they become too short, cells lose the ability to divide healthily, and exposure to metals like arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead speeds up telomere loss, essentially putting your biological aging on fast forward. The heavy metals also again by impacting our mitochondrial health impacts our overall cellular health and people with high exposure to metals often have accelerated aging because of that, including cognitive decline and reduced energy levels and the impact on epigenetic age acceleration is profound. Heavy metals essentially disrupt the gene regulatory switches that keep our bodies young.

I actually recently got my blood screened and I was a little bit surprised that my biological age was a little bit higher and I'm not too fussed about it because it's still a decade or more below my actual age. But, you know, doctors tend to be perfectionists. When I was taking a closer look, I actually noticed that my mercury levels have been creeping upwards. So, ideally, our mercury levels would be quite low, zero even, but at least lower than about 10 nanograms per milliliter. Mine was creeping up to 10 in my last blood check and then most recently it even creeped up over to 12. So that's at a level that's fairly concerning and it may be related to the changes that I've been seeing with my biological age calculations.

Understanding all of these effects on our health and taking action to reduce exposure is key if you want to stay vibrant and healthy for as long as possible. So heavy metals aren't just hiding in factories or chemistry labs. They're actually in everyday items all around us affecting us in ways we often overlook. Let's uncover where these hidden toxins lurk from our homes to the products we use daily so you can take steps to minimize your exposure.

It may come as a shock, but actually a common place we find heavy metals are in children's toys and jewelry. They can have dangerous levels of lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, and arsenic. And studies show that metallic toy parts often have the highest concentrations of these metals. And in some samples, the levels exceed established safety limits by a considerable margin. So don't trust labels. This is particularly concerning because children often put toys and jewelry in their mouths, increasing the risk of ingestion. So if you're a parent, choose toys that have been thoroughly tested and certified for their safety to protect your children.

Acrylic paints, particularly those used by school children or hobbyists, are another surprising source of heavy metals. Colors containing manganese, cobalt, nickel, zinc, arsenic, cadmium, and lead can vary significantly in their metal content depending on the shade. The vividness of certain colors often comes from the addition of these metals. For example, cadmium is used to produce bright reds and yellows. And while acrylic paints for general consumers are not intended for ingestion, repeated skin contact or accidental inhalation when mixing or spraying paints can contribute to cumulative exposure. And remember, kids tend to stick things in their mouths.

So many of us use disposable food containers because they're just so convenient. However, disposable food containers can release heavy metals like zinc, barium, iron, manganese, nickel, copper, antimony, chromium, selenium, beryllium, lead, cobalt, vanadium, and cadmium. Oh my god, so many heavy metals. And this is even worse when they're exposed to hot liquids. This means that reheating food in those containers or even just packing hot meals in them can lead to leaching, allowing these metals to enter our food. So, this is a clear reminder to reconsider how we use disposable packaging and opt for alternatives. Use glass or stainless steel whenever possible and cook at home if you can.

Did you know that your favorite wine or liquor bottle could also be a source of heavy metals? So, the enamel decorations found on some glass bottles, particularly those used for alcoholic beverages, can contain high concentrations of lead and cadmium. While the glass itself might be safe, the colorful decorations can actually leach these metals, especially if they chip off or wear down over time. So, it's best to choose plain glass bottles, especially when considering reusing them for water or other beverages. And you thought you were safe trying to get glass instead of plastic.

Ceramic dishes and glazed pottery can also contain heavy metals like cadmium in their decorative finishes. Cadmium pigments are often used in ceramics to achieve the bright colors we mentioned, particularly in the enamels of decorated drinking glasses and dinnerware. Acidic beverages like orange juice or wine can cause these metals to leach from the ceramic surface, especially if the glaze is old or cracked. If you're a fan of vibrant handmade ceramics, make sure they're marked food safe or have undergone proper testing.

Household dust may seem innocuous, but it's actually a source of heavy metals as well. Dust particles in your home can contain cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, and zinc originating from outdoor pollutants, deteriorating paint, or even traffic emissions that make their way inside. This is particularly relevant in older homes where lead paint might still be present. Regular cleaning, particularly using a vacuum with a HEPA filter, can help reduce exposure to these harmful particles, particularly if you have young children in your home because they spend a lot of time near the floor.

Water is another very common source of heavy metal exposure, particularly arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, and chromium. So these contaminants enter our water supply through industrial discharges, agricultural runoff, and even natural processes like the weathering of rocks. This means that even well water or groundwater could be at risk depending on your local geology and nearby industrial activities. The World Health Organization highlights these metals as contributing to severe health issues like we mentioned, heart disease and renal injuries, particularly after chronic exposure, which if you live in one of these places with toxins in the water, you're going to get chronic exposure. Investing in a high-quality water filter designed to remove heavy metals is an important preventive step.

The products we use to make ourselves look good might be doing the opposite for our health. Cosmetics like lipsticks, foundations, face paints, and even nail polish have been found to contain heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, arsenic, and mercury. So, lead is particularly common in lipsticks, which is worrying given how much of it is inadvertently ingested over time. Nickel and chromium are also found in eyeshadows, where mercury is sometimes used in skin lightening products. Nail salon technicians are particularly at risk due to repeated exposure to airborne dust containing metals like manganese, lead, nickel, chromium, and cadmium. These metals can exceed recommended safety levels posing both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks. It's a good practice to look for cosmetics labeled heavy metal tested and to avoid those with vague ingredients lists or made in regions with lax safety regulations.

Cookware is another hidden source of heavy metals. Artisanal aluminum cookware, often made from recycled scrap metal, can release lead, cadmium, and even aluminum into your food, especially with prolonged cooking or when preparing acidic dishes. Long-term exposure to aluminum has been associated with neurotoxicity and has been linked to Alzheimer's disease. Even stainless steel cookware can leach nickel and chromium, particularly when cooking acidic foods like tomato sauce. If you're sensitive to metals or have a history of allergies, it may be worth investing in high-quality low-leaching cookware like ceramic-coated or stainless steel without added coatings. Copper cookware lined with tin or stainless steel is also commonly used, but it's important to avoid letting the copper itself come in direct contact with food as too much copper can lead to gastrointestinal distress and liver damage.

Heavy metals of course are also in our food. Fish and seafood in particular are well-known sources of mercury, arsenic, and lead. Predatory fish like swordfish, tuna, and shark have some of the highest mercury levels due to bioaccumulation, where mercury becomes concentrated as it moves up the food chain. I know this is my downfall because I love tuna. I have it once or twice a week and I'm pretty sure I had it within the week. I recently checked my blood levels for mercury. So, that can impact your blood levels and it does go down over time. So, most likely what I'll do first is repeat my blood check and see if it's just naturally decreased. It can also get processed as you eat nutritious foods that contain helpful products like selenium. Shrimps, oysters, and other shellfish are also prone to accumulating arsenic, which can contribute to systemic toxicity and even cancer over time. So, if you're a seafood lover like I am, choose lower mercury options like salmon and keep an eye on consumption frequency. I love seafood because of the benefits you get from omega-3s. So, I will still keep eating seafoods no matter what, but it's just crucial to keep an eye on your mercury levels and choose the safer options like the salmon. I also like seaweed. It doesn't tend to hold as much of the bad stuff like the heavy metals.

But even vegetables, particularly leafy greens and root vegetables, absorb cadmium, lead, and arsenic from contaminated soil. So this is exacerbated by the use of fertilizers and pesticides containing heavy metals. Rice, which is obviously the staple food in so much of the world, is particularly notorious for absorbing arsenic from the soil. The health risks associated with arsenic and rice involve both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects, including increased risk of lung, bladder, and skin cancers. Non-cancer health effects include adverse impacts on respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. So to reduce exposure, rinse your rice thoroughly and cook it in excess water that is drained off to help lower the arsenic levels.

Finally, hobbies like jewelry making, welding, and stained glass work can lead to increased exposures to heavy metals like lead and cadmium. Similarly, occupations such as construction, mining, or manufacturing often involve regular exposures to heavy metals. So, if you are a hobbyist or work in these environments, use personal protective equipment, PPE, and ensure proper ventilation. And this will make a huge difference in reducing your risk.

Now, I wanted to spend some time to dive into some of the less obvious environments where heavy metal exposure can occur. Places you may not think of, but which can still pose significant risks.

Children's playgrounds are meant to be safe spaces, but if they're located near bulk mineral transport facilities or port operations, they can be hot spots for heavy metal exposure. Studies have proven that the dust in these areas significantly exceed safety benchmarks. This is so risky, especially for young children who might ingest the dust through hand-to-mouth activities. Abandoned metal mines are not just relics of the past. They continue to pose environmental and health risks long after their productive life. So, people who live near historic mining sites can have elevated levels of lead and cadmium in their blood and urine just due to the environmental contamination. The soil and water around these areas are contaminated for many decades leading to the direct exposure through skin contact or indirect exposure through gardening, hiking, or just living nearby. Even casual activities like exploring these seemingly harmless places can lead to exposure.

Playgrounds and homes that are located near highways are also incredibly contaminated by heavy metals like copper, arsenic, and nickel. Traffic emissions are a significant source of these contaminants. And the small metal particles released from tire and brake wear settle in the nearby soil, turning your homes or yards and playgrounds into potential hot spots for these heavy metals. And they're inhaled again as dust or ingested if children are playing around and sticking their hands in their mouth. And this can lead to potential long-term health risks.

Some farms are also situated in some of these dangerous areas, especially if there's those highways or other sources of contamination like I mentioned or even a history of artisanal zinc smelting. The soils will retain high levels of heavy metals. And this is really concerning because the metals will get into the food and enter the food chain, thus contaminating our food sources. So even today, vegetables and grains grown in these types of regions will have higher than safe levels of heavy metals. If you can buy produce from local farmers' markets or directly from the farms, it's worth inquiring about the land's history and the soil's quality.

So lately, we've been hearing so much about wildfires. Recently, we even had a wildfire in New Jersey, which is very bizarre. They're obviously destructive themselves, but they can also transform naturally occurring metals in the soil and plants into more toxic forms. During a wildland fire, metals like chromium can become hexavalent chromium, which is a highly toxic form that is then dispersed in smoke and dust. Firefighters, as well as people living downwind of large fires, can be at risk of inhaling these transformed metals. Inhalation of smoke containing these toxic forms can lead to respiratory issues and long-term health problems. It's an underappreciated risk, especially as wildfires increase in their frequency and severity.

Public gardens, particularly those in urban areas that might have been created on previously industrial land, can also have elevated heavy metals. The soils, they may look beautiful. I know we've got some here in New York, too. But unfortunately, the toxins still persist. This is really concerning because a lot of people like to use these as community gardens and grow produce, which they eat, and this can lead to heavy metal contamination.

Surprisingly, tattoo inks can be another source of exposure to heavy metals. Inks may contain lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, and titanium to create the vibrant colors. For example, cadmium is often used in red, orange, and yellow pigments, while nickel and chromium are used in other colors. And these metals obviously enter your skin and therefore the rest of your body. And long-term health impact is still unknown. We do know that chronic exposures can certainly increase the risk for skin irritation, allergic reaction, or even systemic toxicity. So, if you're getting a tattoo, it's worth asking about the ink's safety certification.

Imported spices and herbs are a less obvious but increasingly recognized source of heavy metal exposure. So, spices like turmeric, chili powder, and curry have been found to contain concerning levels of lead, often due to contamination during processing or from adulteration to enhance their color. So if you're buying adaptogens or supplements or any type of herbs and they're coming from overseas, then watch out in particular because oftentimes there is not the proper testing of such substances. Lead exposure from spices can accumulate over time, particularly for people who use them frequently in their cooking. So ensure your spices, herbs, and supplements are coming from trusted reputable brands to help mitigate these risks or even if they're tested by third parties. That can definitely help.

Vintage and thrifted furniture or decor items are super trendy and sustainable, but they may come with hidden health risks. Older furniture, particularly painted pieces or glazed ceramics, often contain lead or cadmium in the paints and finishes. And as these items age, their surfaces can degrade, releasing those metal particles into the air or dust. So before you bring any vintage piece into your home, it's really wise to test for lead, especially if it's something that children might come into contact with, like a toy box or a chair.

Candle wicks, particularly those on imported or older candles, may also contain lead. Burning these candles releases lead particles into the air, which can then be inhaled. So some scented candles have also been found to contain zinc or nickel in the scent additives or dyes. I know we were worried about additives and dyes in our food, but then we forgot to think about our candles. So to avoid this, opt for candles with braided cotton wicks and those labeled as free from heavy metals.

Lead crystal glassware is prized for its brilliance and its weight. But it can also leach lead into our drinks, particularly if it's acidic like wine or juice or if the liquid is left in the glassware for an extended period of time. While using lead crystal occasionally is considered safe, regular use, particularly for storage, can increase the risk of lead exposure.

Renovating an old house might seem exciting, but old buildings, particularly those built before 1978, are likely to contain lead-based paints. During renovation, these paints can release lead dust, which can be inhaled or ingested. Copper pipes with lead solder can also be an issue in older plumbing systems. The renovation process itself can turn your home into an exposure risk zone if proper precautions like sealing off areas and wearing protective equipment aren't taken.

So, heavy metal exposure can come from common places and places you'd never expect. But with some foresight, you can reduce these risks.

Check your playgrounds. Avoid playgrounds near major roads or industrial sites. Choose play areas that are well away from potential sources of airborne contaminants. Be cautious with your vintage items. Test them for lead-based paints before bringing them into your home. Garden smartly, especially if you live in a city or a historical area. Test your soil for contaminants like lead or cadmium. And stick to candles that are safe. They have cotton wicks and avoid those that don't specify being heavy metal free. Ask your tattoo parlor if their inks have been tested for heavy metals as well.

For children's toys and jewelry, look for products that are labeled as lead-free and cadmium-free. If they are produced by a company that's trusted, typically they'll have certifications from third-party safety organizations. Avoid cheap imported toys or jewelry that lack the proper testing. And choose your paint carefully. Non-toxic heavy metal-free paints should be tested. So, the products will be labeled AP non-toxic or it conforms to ASTM D4236, which means that they meet certain safety standards.

Avoid reheating your food in disposable containers and instead use glass, steel, or at least if you have to use plastic, make sure that it's clear plastic, it's BPA-free. So, these alternatives are far less likely to leach harmful metals into your food. For ceramics and glassware, opt for the plain ones. Unpainted ceramics and glassware are safer. Avoid using lead crystal glassware for everyday drinking and storing liquids, particularly acidic beverages.

Improve your indoor air quality by vacuuming often with a HEPA filter to clean your carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture. And dust your surfaces with a damp cloth to avoid spreading particles in the air. Remember those feather dusters? I don't know if anyone uses those anymore, but they suck. They're terrible for you. They just spread the dust everywhere. They don't really capture the dust like they're intended to.

Renovate safely. So, if you are renovating an older home, take precautions to limit exposure to lead-based paint and dust. Hire professionals who follow lead-safe practices and ensure that work areas are sealed off to prevent contamination of living spaces.

And be mindful of what you're consuming. Reduce your mercury exposure by choosing fish that are lower in the food chain. Typically, they're smaller. Salmon aren't that small, but they're small enough and safe. Sardines and mackerel are also tiny fish, so they don't have as much mercury buildup. Larger fish like tuna, swordfish, and shark are pretty high in mercury. So limit your intake to one serving a week or one a month even if you're particularly sensitive. And arsenic is a common contaminant in rice. So reduce your exposure again by rinsing it thoroughly and cooking it with a method that involves boiling with excess water and draining that and incorporate other grains like quinoa or barley into your diet to diversify your intake. Or just be like me. I'm pretty low carb. I don't eat starches generally like rice, pastas, and bread. So that decreases my exposure significantly. And purchase your spices and supplements from reputable sources that conduct heavy metal testing. Remember, a lot of imported spices and herbs have elevated levels of heavy metals. So, it's really, really important to be safe.

You can use safer cookware by replacing artisanal aluminum or questionable non-stick cookware with stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic-coated alternatives. Be cautious with stainless steel when cooking acidic food because it can leach nickel and chromium. Avoid copper exposure if you're using copper cookware. Just make sure that it's lined with tin or stainless steel so that the copper doesn't leach into your food.

For cosmetics, choose the ones that have been labeled as tested for heavy metals. Brands that are transparent about their sourcing and production processes are generally safer. And avoid products that have vague ingredient lists or manufactured in areas with lax safety regulations. I love how Sephora actually has a clean label now. I buy only clean labeled cosmetics myself.

Finally, make sure you're using a high-quality water filter that removes your heavy metals like lead, arsenic, and mercury. Look for filters that have been certified by the NSF International for reliable performance. And stay informed. Stay updated on product recalls and safety advisories related to heavy metals. Everything from medications to products that you buy or use on your body can be contaminated and sometimes we discover it years later. So, government agencies and consumer protection groups often will publish warnings and guidelines that will help you stay safe.
