Would you bow in prayer with me? Of all the gifts you've given to us, oh God, the one we give you thanks for the most is our savior Jesus Christ. We thank you, oh God, that you've seen fit by your grace and your mercy to grant us the privilege of your presence. We know that we're not worthy, God, but we are grateful. Pray now that your word would be the lamp unto our feet and the light unto our path to continue to guide us to live a life that shows how grateful we truly are. In the name of our Christ, our King, our Savior, our Messiah, our Lord Jesus, we do pray. Amen.

On this third Sunday of Advent, I ask your permission to connect this sermon with where we were last week. Last week, as you know, we began listening to God speak to us as the angel spoke to those who are involved in the birth of Jesus Christ. Last week, we were in Luke chapter 1, listening to a Christmas conversation between Gabriel and Mary, and I tried my best to persuade you what Gabriel shared with Mary, that nothing is impossible for God. Today I'm asking you to journey with me as we follow the chronology of Christmas and move from Luke 1 to Matthew chapter 1 where Joseph is now brought into the picture. Matthew chapter 1 beginning in verse number 18. I ask you if you're physically able and willing to do so to join us as we reverence the reading of the word of God. For Matthew chapter 1 beginning in verse number 18. This morning I'll be reading out of the New International Version of God's word.
This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about. His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph. But before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph, her husband, was faithful to the law and didn't want to expose her to public disgrace, he had it in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you to give him the name Jesus, as he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet. The virgin will conceive, give birth to a son, and they will call him Emmanuel, which means God is with us. When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
You may be seated in the presence of the Lord. Allow me to as we contemplate this dilemma that Joseph faces, allow me to dig into the annals of R&B music and put a title on this sermon from Frankie Beverly and Maze. Before I let go, Before I Let Go. Beyonce made it popular in 2019. But this song, originally recorded in 1981, as you know, is the signature iconic song of Frankie Beverly and Maze. It didn't rise above number 13 in the Billboard charts, but it's always been number one in any reputable gathering of suntan folk. Listen, listen to me y'all. I If if your family reunion, if your college homecoming, if your wedding reception, if your birthday party, if the funeral repass for big mama back at home, if it don't sound like this, something's wrong. So y'all are not God. All right. Thank you. Somebody knows that's the anthem of a good black get together. If that ain't playing, your DJ needs to be fired and your black card needs to be revoked. We love that song. It caused us to get up and dance and celebrate. But the irony of that classic R andB song is that it's more B than R. It's more blues than rhythm. It's a breakup song. Matter of fact, Frankie Beverly, who produced it and sang lead, confessed that he wrote it thinking about a woman named Dolores Warren. Frankie loved Dolores, but he had to break up with her because he was in a relationship with another woman. Right up there with neither one of us. You're telling on your age now. Right. Right next to At the End of the Road, right alongside I will always love you is this song by Frankie Beverly and Maze. Now we've had our good times. That's what they say. But we're hurting each other. Girl, it's a shame. And I won't be foolish. No. No. Cuz I want to know. I got to make sure I'm right before I let go. Frankie Beverly wrote a song because he knew he was in a difficult position with a difficult decision to make. Decisions that would not only affect his life but the life of Dolores and other people around him. And all he wanted to do was make certain he was right before he made the decision. I I don't know if Frankie Beverly knows the Lord, but I can guarantee he was reading Matthew chapter 1. Because if anyone ever had a dilemma about letting someone go, it's his brother named Joseph.
Come back to Matthew chapter 1. You know the context. Mary and Joseph are engaged to be married. And in that day and age, an engagement was not just a love affair. It was a legally binding contract between a bride and a groom. It was contract that was sealed by what was called the dowy or in Jewish culture the mohar. Everyone say mohar. Mohar. M o h a r. Mohar is a little bit different than a dowy. Mohar is not a payment to a bride's father for the daughter. Mohar is literally a financial gift from the groom's family to the bride's family for financial protection for the bride in case of divorce. It was not buying the bride. It was giving financial assurance to the bride's family that if the marriage doesn't work out, the bride who has now lost her virginity would still have financial assurance because there's been money given by the groom's family. In a real sense, a mohar is alimony given up front. It's protection. The mohar has been given. The wedding's been planned. And everybody in Nazareth knows about it. Cuz at that time when Mary and Joseph are engaged, Nazareth only has 200 residents. It's as small as this church. Everybody knows Mary and Joseph are getting married. Now, in an engagement, the soontobe bride would live with her mother and father for a year after the engagement while the groom's family prepared to receive her in. So, Mary and Joseph get engaged and for a year she's living with her mama and her daddy. Which means in Luke chapter 1, when Gabriel comes to her to tell her, "You're going to conceive and have a baby," Mary's not living with Joseph at that time. She's been with her mother and her father. And you'll recall from Luke chapter 1 that after Gabriel tells her, "You're going to get pregnant," he sends her immediately to Jerusalem to visit Elizabeth. She's there for six months. Please stay with me. She finds out she's going to be pregnant in Nazareth at her mama and her daddy's house. She then goes 70 miles out of town to Jerusalem where she hangs out with Elizabeth for six months. And guess what happens in those six months? She starts to show. Everyone knows she's pregnant. And the Bible says in Matthew 1:18 that Joseph found out she was pregnant. You're so holy you can't even picture it. Uh, she didn't tell him she was pregnant. He found out. Well, how'd he find out? Cuz she's in Jerusalem and she's now showing. And although there's no internet, there is a Negro net. And once she started showing, people start talking and word traveled 70 miles from Jerusalem to Nazareth to find Joseph. And somebody knowing how folk are was messy. Somebody came to Joseph said, "Boy, guess what I heard? I heard Mary, that girl you supposed to marry, she's in Jerusalem and she's pregnant." Now, when Joseph hears it, there's one thing he knows for certain. It ain't mine. We ain't got to go on Mory Povich for this. I know I am not the father. But the news of her pregnancy causes a deep dilemma for Joseph. What am I going to do with Mary? This is a serious serious question. This isn't some trivial decision. I'm not trying to figure out what I'm going to wear. This ain't about where we're going to dinner. This is a lifechanging decision I've got to make about what I'm going to do with Mary. It's going to affect my family, my friends, my fiance, my finances, my feelings, my future. All of it is wrapped up in this one decision.
Beloved, have you ever been in a moment where you had to make a decision that you knew would define the narrative of your life? Have you ever stood at a crossroad and knew whatever choice you made was going to impact you, your family, and the people around you, and all you want to do was make sure you got it right? Have you ever had options in front of you, and you didn't know which one to take, but you wanted to make certain that whatever road you went down, God's hand was on the path you chose? Yeah. Have you ever stood in a situation where you knew a lot was at stake and you really didn't know which way you ought to go, but you WERE PRAYING FOR GOD TO make God's will known unto you because you knew that once you made this decision, there was no turning back. I mean, have you ever just really prayed, God, don't let me mess this up. TOO MUCH IS AT STAKE. MY FUTURE is at stake. My family's at stake. My career is at stake. My money IS AT STAKE. GOD, I NEED YOU TO GUIDE ME BECAUSE I GOTTA GET THIS thing right. It's exactly where Joseph is. And we learned in the 8:00 service that when you stand in this place of a difficult decision, a tough choice, when you want to make certain you're getting God right, we learned at 8:00 that Joseph paused and was not driven by his emotions. One of the worst things you can do in life is make a lifechanging decision on your emotions. Hear me beloved. Feelings are real, but they ain't always true. Feelings are not always based on all the facts. And feelings change. And you should never make a permanent decision on a temporary feeling. Go on, preach, Pastor Wesley. So, in the 8:00 service, we talked about the four emotions, feelings that Joseph had to overcome that you cannot control you when you've got a difficult decision to make. You can't be guided by your pride. You will always get God wrong if you care about what people think about you. You cannot be guided by anger. Anger will cause you to miss the will of God every time. You cannot be guided by vengeance. You can't simply want someone to feel what you felt and get even with them for what they did for you. If being petty is on your agenda, you going to miss God. And you can't be driven by greed. Money cannot be the only thing that governs the decision you are going to make because all money ain't good money. And sometimes the money you earn will cost you more than what you earned. And there are a whole lot of things in this life. Money will not be able to buy you. Money cannot let you lay down at night and go to sleep. Money cannot reconcile a relationship with someone you love. Money cannot give you peace and joy within your heart. There are some things money cannot buy. And if you walk in the will of God in any difficult decision you've got to make. I just believe that if you're in God's will, God will take care of you. God will provide. God will open a door. God will take care of your needs. As a matter of fact, can I pause? Is there anybody here that's ever had to make a difficult decision and you went where God told you to go AND WHAT GOD did for you was better than you ever could have imagined. that God made a way, God provided, God took care of you. Don't let money and the pursuit of money be the only thing that drives you as you weigh out this decision.
Well, I want to pick back up right there. We talked about the emotions. Joseph, the Bible says in verse 20, has taken time to think these things over. In his heart, his first emotion was get rid of her. But he pauses to think things over. Now, I suggest to you that one of the things Joseph does in this pause is that he prays. And family, you ain't Christian if you didn't see this one coming. I cannot express to you enough how important it is when you stand at a critical crossroad in your life when you know a lot hangs in the decision that you've got to make. I can't stress enough how much you need to bathe that decision in prayer. I'm going to say it one more time while you write it down. I cannot stress to you enough how important it is for you to take this thing to God. Lay it at the feet of God. Open your heart to the will of God and ask God to lead you and guide you. The Proverbs says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Don't lean to your own understanding, but in all your ways acknowledge GOD, CALL ON GOD, PRAY to God, and God will direct your path. You've got to put this thing in prayer. Now, you're not going to like what I'm about to tell you, but sometimes it's going to take more than one prayer. There's some stuff too critical for you just to kneel down in 30 seconds and tell God what you need and get up and think that everything is going to be all right. Sometimes you got to labor in prayer. Sometimes you got to lay out at the altar in prayer. SOMETIMES YOU GOT TO BOW DOWN MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE DAY AND ASK GOD TO LEAD you and TO GUIDE YOU AND TO DIRECT YOU. IF ALL YOU KNOW IS JESUS WEPT, BABY, YOU AIN'T GOING TO GET THROUGH THIS SEASON. YOU GOT TO KNOW TO CALL ON THE LORD. FATHER, I STRETCH MY HAND TO THEE. NO OTHER HELP. I know there's some things you just got to keep praying about. Prayer clears your heart of emotions that confuse you. Prayer opens your eyes to see the will of God that you may have missed. Prayer makes you RECEPTIVE TO WHATEVER GOD IS CALLING YOU TO DO or to call you to be. AND YOU CANNOT GET GOD right without prayer.
Y'all, if you don't believe how necessary prayer is, just look at the life of Jesus, the son of God, God himself, who can work miracles. And look at how often Jesus prayed. There he is standing at the graveside of Lazarus about to raise him from the dead. And you know what he does? He prays. There he is in the Garden of Gethsemane trying to figure out if I'm going to yield to the call to go to the cross. So, you know what he does? He prays. The night before he chooses the 12 who are going to walk with him and carry on his ministry. You know what he does when he's on the Mount of Transfiguration and he's showing his glory. You know what he does? He prays when he gets ready to break bread and feed 5,000 folk. You know what he does? He prays when the crowd presses in on him and he needs to get a way to get some clarity. You know what he does? He prays when he's getting ready to go on the cross and die and surrender his life. You know what he does? He prays when he's there at the Jordan River about to be baptized by his cousin John. You know what he does? He prays. When he sits DOWN WITH HIS DISCIPLES, the very first lesson he teaches them IS HOW TO PRAY. BECAUSE YOU CAN'T GET GOD right if you don't know how to pray. And I'm so tired of hearing Christians say things like, "Well, all I can do is pray." You talk about prayer like it's some experimental drug. You talk about prayer as if it's just some last option that you reach out for when you haven't gotten everything you need. That's the problem. Your prayer life is your last option rather than your first priority. When you really know the power of prayer, let me PAUSE REAL QUICK. IS THERE A WITNESS IN THIS HOUSE THAT WHEN YOU CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD AND YOU BOW DOWN AND SURRENDER AND TALK TO THE LORD THAT GOD WILL HEAR AND GOD WILL ANSWER AND GOD MOVES ON OUR PRAYERS. Somebody tell them you need to pray. You need to pray.
Now, now there are two things I need to tell you about prayer in order for it to be at its best in your life. The Bible tells us that Joseph was a righteous man. As a matter of fact, one version says he was dedicated to the law. Which means, Aaron, that that Joseph is dedicated to daily righteousness. Joseph is committed to being holy. Joseph prays every day. Some of you not going to like this. This prayer about what to do with Mary. This ain't the first time he's prayed. He's prayed a whole lot before this. And the reason I tell you that is that it's hard to hear God today when you didn't care about talking to God yesterday. It's hard to discern the will of God over the big things when you didn't give at all about what God wanted over the little things. It's hard to hear God in the storm when you didn't seek God in the sunshine. Prayer at its best is not convenient. It is a commitment. You should not just pray when you need something or want something or want God to speak. That when YOU TRULY FALL IN LOVE WITH PRAYER. YOU TALK TO GOD JUST TO HAVE A LITTLE TALK WITH GOD TO TELL HIM ALL ABOUT YOUR TROUBLES TO JUST BOW DOWN EVERY MORNING AND THANK GOD FOR ANOTHER DAY THAT GOD HAS GIVEN. THANK YOU, LORD, FOR WATCHING OVER MY CHILDREN. THANK YOU, GOD, FOR THE BLESSINGS YOU'VE GIVEN TO ME. YOU'VE GOT TO KNOW HOW TO PRAY. LORD, I want you to hear me. God doesn't desire to just speak to one area of your life. God can care so much more about you than this one decision you're making. And part of the problem is you don't talk enough to the Lord. Prayer should not be a fire hose that you only reach for when something's burning. Prayer has to be part of your daily routine for prayer to work when you need it most. Bible says he was righteous. Prayer requires a daily commitment. Watch what happens. God sends an angel to him when he's praying. And watch what the angel says. Joseph, go ahead and marry her. Now, Patrick, the reason that's tough, cuz that's the last thing he wanted to do. Hear me? When you pray, it doesn't always mean that the answer is going to make you happy. Prayer doesn't make it easy. Prayer doesn't make it comfortable. Prayer makes it clear. God has a way of calling you to do the very last thing you wanted to do. Jonah, I know you ain't going to like this, but go to Nineveh. Paul, you may not like this, but you got to live with that thorn. Abraham and Sarah, I need you to move and leave your mommy and daddy's house, and I ain't telling you where you're going. Job, you going to have to go through this season of suffering in your life. MOSES, MOSES, I GOT AN ASSIGNMENT FOR YOU. YOU DON'T WANT IT, BUT YOU GOT TO GO BACK TO Pharaoh and tell him, I said, "Let my PEOPLE GO." ESTHER, YOU GOT TO PUT YOUR LIFE ON THE LINE AND GO TO THE KING AND TELL HIM TO SAVE YOUR PEOPLE. JESUS, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO LIKE THIS, BUT YOU GOT TO GO TO THE CROSS. GOD WILL SOMETIMES REVEAL IN A PLACE OF PRAYER THE VERY THING you don't want to do. And hear me, beloved, about prayer. God will never reveal to you what you've already determined you ain't gonna do. Can I say that again? God will never reveal to you what you've already determined you are not going to do. So for prayer to be at its best, you've got to kneel down before God and determine in your heart that being holy is more important than being happy. YOU GOT TO MAKE A DECISION THAT WHATEVER GOD WILLS IS BETTER THAN WHATEVER you want. YOU GOT TO FALL DOWN LIKE JESUS AND DECLARE, "NEVERTHELESS, NOT MY WILL, BUT THY WILL BE OPEN. GOD, I AM OPEN TO WHATEVER YOU WANT ME TO DO. WHATEVER YOU WANT ME TO GO, WHATEVER YOU WANT ME TO SAY, WHEREVER YOU WANT ME TO LIVE, WHOEVER YOU WANT ME TO BE WITH, GOD, I'LL DO WHATEVER YOU want me to do. If you're going to get this decision right, you've got to bathe it in daily prayer and be open to God guiding you into the last thing you want to do.
Can I tell you a true story real quick? The last thing I ever wanted to be was a pastor. My dad was a pastor. My granddad was a pastor. My great-granddad was a pastor. And I know what suntan Christians will do to you. This is the last thing I wanted to do. I was in medical school minding my business. And I made the mistake of asking God, God, what do you want me to do? God began to guide and open doors. The next thing I know, here I is. There there's an old saying, if you ever want to make God laugh, tell God what you ain't going to do. If you really want to be guided, you've got to have a deep, devotional, dedicated, disciplined prayer life. Joseph is praying. Joseph has paused his emotions. When you stand at a crossroad with a critical decision, the third thing I want to tell you, you've got to be open to how God wants to use you for his glory. Say that again. You've got to be open to how God wants to use you for his glory. See, see the problem with many Christians is we believe that everything God does is just to bless us. Watch what the angel says. Joseph, Joseph, you got to marry her. Watch it. Watch it. Cuz this was the plan all along. The plan was she was going to be a virgin. The plan was some brother was going to have to marry her. She's going to give birth. And at the end of the plan, people will call him Emanuel. Don't miss this. The plan is to lead to people calling him Emmanuel. The plan is to lead to people seeing God is with them. So God is choosing people to be part of the plan that lead to other folk calling God. He's with us. You're missing it. I'm using you not just to bless you, but to position you so that I can use you for other people to know that Jesus is real. And if you walk away from the plan, you detach yourself from God using you the way God wants to use you. My brother, my sister, I CAME BY to tell you that everything God does in your life is not to bless you and blow you up and prosper you and add to your bank account and put a new CAR IN YOUR DRIVEWAY. NO. CAN GOD USE YOU FOR GOD'S GLORY? CAN I MAKE YOU MAKE A DECISION THAT AT THE END OF THE ROAD THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE WHO RECOGNIZE I AM GOD? So as difficult as this may be part of my prayer has to go like this. Lord how can you use me? I know what I want God. I know what I feel. But ultimately, I want to be part of the plan of your glory. Can God break you to use you? Can God tell you no to use you? Can God tell you to walk away so God can use you? Joseph's got to pause his emotions. He's got to bathe it in prayer. He's going to ask for God to use him. And in this prayer, God sends him an angel.
Now, what's interesting, saints, is that Matthew never identifies the angel as Gabriel. Say with me, Bible study time. In Luke, the angel is named Gabriel. We assume in Matthew it's Gabriel, but Matthew never gives him that name. He just said it's an angel. Now, why come? Why does Matthew not name him Gabriel? Maybe it's because Matthew wants us to know Gabriel is not the only voice God can use. Because in a critical decision, you know what you need most? A trusted voice. You need wise counsel. You need someone who God can send to get in your ear and help guide you into the will and the plan and the purpose of God. Beloved, here's what I know for certain. There is danger when the wrong people are in your ear. There is trouble when the wrong folk are advising you. You're going to go down the wrong road when you're listening to folk who you know you cannot trust. The Bible says in Psalm 1, "Blessed is the person that walketh not in the counsel OF THE UNGODLY, NOR STANDS in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful." Allan, don't miss the progression. Because when you listen, you will stand, and then you'll sit in it, AND YOU'LL FIND YOURSELF FIND YOURSELF in wickedness because of who was in your ear. All of us need trusted, wise sources. So God sends an angel. And do you know what YOU NEED IN YOUR LIFE? You need an angel. I ain't talking about white robes and wings. I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT HARPS and halos. YOU KNOW WHO ANGELS ARE? IT'S REAL SIMPLE. ANGELS ARE THOSE who've been close to God SO YOU CAN TRUST WHAT THEY'RE SAYING TO YOU. Let me say it again. ANGELS ARE CLOSE TO GOD SO YOU CAN TRUST WHAT THEY'RE SAYING TO YOU. YOUR PROBLEM IS YOU GOT A WHOLE LOT OF FOLK AROUND YOU, BUT AIN'T NONE OF THEM CLOSE ENOUGH TO GOD FOR YOU TO TRUST WHAT THEY'RE SAYING TO YOU. IF IF IF YOU ARE THE holiest person in your circle, Your circle's too small. IF YOU KNOW MORE BIBLE THAN ANYBODY ELSE, YOU NEED TO FIND SOME NEW FOLK IN YOUR LIFE. YOU NEED SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN SENT BY GOD, WHO YOU KNOW ONLY WANTS YOU TO STAND IN THE CENTER OF THE WILL OF GOD. THEY'RE NOT OUT TO USE YOU. THEY'RE NOT MANIPULATING YOU. THEY DON'T WANT NOTHING FROM YOU. THEY JUST WANT TO SEE YOU GET IT RIGHT WITH GOD. SOMEBODY SAY, "I need an angel." I need an angel. YOU NEED SOMEONE WHO'S CLOSE TO GOD. AND WATCH THIS. AND I'm done. WATCH HOW JOSEPH KNOWS he can trust the angel. Because the Bible says that when the ANGEL SPOKE, EVERYTHING HE said was in alignment with Isaiah chapter 7. Uh uh. EVERYTHING HE TOLD ME WAS ALIGNED WITH GOD'S WORD. THAT'S WHAT I NEED MOST AT A CROSSROAD. I need a word from God. I DON'T NEED YOUR POLITICAL OPINION. I need a word. I NEED MORE THAN CAREER ADVICE. I NEED A WORD. I NEED MORE THAN JUST RELATIONSHIP ADVICE. I NEED A WORD. I NEED MORE THAN FINANCIAL ADVICE. I NEED A WORD FROM GOD. AND THAT'S WHY YOU OUGHT TO FIND YOURSELF IN A GOOD BIBLE TEACHING, BIBLE PREACHING, CHURCH OF GOD, BECAUSE AT SOME POINT IN YOUR LIFE, YOU'RE GOING TO NEED A WORD FROM the Lord. I'm done. YOU NEED SOMEBODY TO REMIND YOU THAT ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR THE GOOD OF THEM THAT LOVE THE LORD. YOU NEED SOMEONE TO REMIND YOU THAT NO WEAPON FORMED AGAINST YOU WILL PROSPER. YOU NEED A WORD THAT THEY THAT WAIT ON THE LORD SHALL RENEW THEIR STRENGTH. YOU NEED A WORD THAT IF YOU TRUST IN GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, GOD WILL GUIDE YOUR PATH. Notice your name. Tell me you need a word. You need a word. Come on. Let let's let's go.
Here it is. When you are at a crossroad with a difficult decision, you can't be guided by your emotions. You've got to bathe this thing in prayer. You've got to be open to God using you to do something you did not want to do. But as long as it brings him glory and you need an angel in your life, you need someone to remind you of what thus saith the Lord. I'm grateful for my friends who cover me and stand with me. But I need someone who's whispering in my ear, "Holiness is right." I need someone whispering in my ear, "God is not pleased with sin." I know you have people who cover you, but do you have anyone who holds you accountable? Something is missing in your life. If there's no one who holds you accountable to be right with God, someone who will tell you that's a lie, someone who reminds you God is not pleased with that. I knew I knew it' get quiet right here cuz we all want friends who who as Kevin Hart said, I don't need permission to ask you to be part of my lie. You want folk who will lie for you. The real test of whether God has sent them is not whether they will lie for you. Will they hold you accountable for what God is doing in your life. You've got a difficult decision to make. You're at a crossroad. A lot hangs in the balance. Lord, my prayer is that in that moment, in that space, you'll teach me to pause my emotions. Don't let me follow just what my heart feels. Allow me to pause and to think, to put my pride and my anger and my vengeance and my greed aside. Lord, teach me how to pray because I need to hear your voice. Not just when I need you, God, but every day. God, I pray that you'd open me to be used by you. Remind me that the road you're calling me down is not just to bless me, but to position me to be used in the plan of your glory. God, won't you send an angel into my life? Someone who's so close to you that I want to be close. Someone who's so close to you that I can trust the word they're saying.
