Second book of Kings, chapter 4, I read from verse 8 to verse 10, it says: It also happened that one day Elisha was passing through Shunem, and there was an important woman there who insisted that he eat with her, and when he passed by, he would come to her house to eat. And she said to her husband, "Look now, I understand that this man who always passes by our house is a holy man of God." Verse 10: "I beg you, let us make a small room with walls, and let us put there a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that when he comes to us, he may stay in it." I am going to read verse 11, please. Verse 11 says: And it happened that one day he passed by there and stayed in that room, and slept there. Amen. Let's leave it at that. The story of Elisha and the Shunammite woman is a story that personally blesses me a lot. It had been days since I had read the passage, but when I came across it, it reminded me of pleasant moments, pleasant teachings from the Lord, pleasant moments because that passage ministered to my soul, ministered to my heart. And I believe that the Lord did not allow me to come across it by chance, but when the Lord allows one to come across a passage, it is because He first has a message for oneself as a minister, as a preacher, but secondly, He also has a message for those who will hear, because you, you know that the Lord knew in advance that you were going to come tonight. Hallelujah. How many say Amen? How many believe that God knew you were going to come? Look, even if at the last moment you were saying, "I don't know if I'm going to go," Hallelujah, "I don't know if it's too late," "I'm not going," "this car of mine," and a lot of things, but God already knew that you and I were going to be here. The story of Elisha, you remember that Elisha is one of the greatest prophets who appear in scripture, along with Elijah. Obviously, Elisha was Elijah's disciple and remained in the position, in a way, after Elijah was taken up to heaven. But the story of this place and this woman, whose name does not appear, but whom everyone in the Bible calls the Shunammite woman, not the Shulamite. We must be careful because they are two different ones. The Shunammite is this one, the story of Elisha because she was from Shunem. The one who appears in Song of Songs is the Shulamite, who was loved by King Solomon, but that is another story. Now, this story is interesting because it turns out that the Bible emphasizes that this woman was an important woman. You know that the Lord does not put details for no reason; what God writes is because it has meaning. How many say Amen? That woman was someone important, the Bible says, as if she was well-known in the place, she was, perhaps, probably in society, she had a recognized social position among everyone. But it turns out that this woman, you will see later, had a small problem, and the problem is that she could not have children, she had not raised children, and her husband was already, the Bible says, old. Hallelujah. And she could not have children. But then it turns out that the prophet Elisha, another of the, quote unquote, another of the coincidences, it says that he passed by her house, near her house, for many days he passed by there on his way. Elisha traveled a lot towards Mount Carmel, and it seems that Shunem, Shunem, excuse me, was in that direction, and he had to pass by there. But how strange that he had to pass by that house. No, it's not a coincidence, because when God seeks to perform a miracle for someone, God will always send someone who will speak to you of the Lord. He will always facilitate a miracle. It is always facilitated by God. Don't think that we seek the miracle. No, forget it. The Bible says in Deuteronomy chapter 28 that if we obey the word of the Lord, all these signs will follow you and overtake you. It is not necessary for you and me to go after a miracle. No, if you place yourself under the shadow of the Lord, miracles, signs, blessings will follow you. Now, there are at least four characteristics that strike me about this woman, four, because if we were to have these four in our lives, regardless of being a woman or a man, we need these four characteristics that I want to show you tonight. First, in verse 8, it says, I will read verse 8 and then I will read verse 9 for the other points I want to discuss with you. It happened, I am in verse 8. It also happened that one day Elisha was passing through Shunem, and there was an important woman there who insisted, listen to this, that he eat with her, and when he passed by, he would come to her house to eat. First characteristic of this important woman in God. I believe that more than being important in the city, she became important because she was written in the word. Doesn't that seem important to you? The importance that stood out in that city remained, as we would say in El Salvador, it remained small compared to the importance God gave her by leaving her written in the word of the Lord. But note that the first characteristic has to do with her being a hospitable woman. How did she know? We will see later. It says that she understood and recognized that he was a man of God, that he was a man of God. That means you don't let just anyone into your house, right? Hallelujah. You have to be careful with that, but that's another topic. But it says, brother, that she insisted, and notice that in the Hebrew word where it says "insisted," the Hebrew word says that it touched Elisha's heart, as if she was so insistent, but not in a pedantic or forceful way, but it touched Elisha's heart. Notice, it touched the heart. "Constrained" is the word. They translated "insistent" there, but in Hebrew, it really means "constrain," "squeeze," as if it touched the heart. The first characteristic has to do with being a good host. Why should we be a good host? Because Hebrews reminds us, without losing our place in Second Kings chapter 4, please go with me, but don't lose the text of Second Kings, Hebrews chapter 13. It turns out that scripture speaks of hospitality as a gift from God. Listen to this: Hospitality is a gift from God to people. And Hebrews 13:2 says: "Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it." Listen, listen, please. Host hospitality. Sometimes one doesn't receive angels, but rather some demon, and you take it home. But because you don't discern, you host. Notice, brother, hosting is not just about giving a place to sleep. No. Notice that the gift of hosting is the gift of attending, whether it's a needy person, someone you know, or someone important. In this case, the woman understood that he was a man of God, and that is important, and she attended to him at home, understanding, obviously, if you know that he is a man of God, look where a man of God enters, he will leave a blessing in the house, surely he will leave a blessing. That is why the Lord told the apostles: "In every place where they receive you, bless that house with peace." Notice, in every place. Now, in the places where they do not receive you, shake the dust off your feet in that place, and that is another topic, because that has to do with leaving something else in place. The Lord had to do it in certain cities where they did not receive Him. He shook the dust off his feet, in a way, and those cities were, notice that the Lord, for example, says in the Bible that Chorazin, for example, did not receive Him, and the Lord said, "Woe to you, Chorazin, for you do this and that and do not receive anyone. No miracles will happen there, and your punishment will be worse." He says, "Worse than Sodom and Gomorrah." And notice that that city, since it was destroyed, has never risen again. Likewise, Capernaum. I was there in Capernaum, it is a city, but it is all ruins because it was condemned because it did not allow Christ to perform miracles, it did not let Him in. Well, that's another topic. I told you, my point is the host. Look, if at any time it falls to you to host someone, let me tell you that it is a gift from God. It's not just about, "Well, come in here and find a space," even if it's on the floor. No, no, no. If you are going to host someone, host the evangelists, the ministers, Paul, the apostles, those who had to travel. Remember, there were no planes, no buses, no trains. They had to travel great distances on foot. And even if they were going to a city, what they sought was to reach certain cities or certain places. In fact, many stayed on the way when they were traveling. There were places where they stayed to sleep without anything there, but sometimes they arrived in cities, and the other brothers, the other believers who knew that this person was traveling, would host them. But they didn't host them in a way like, "Here, find a place." Because scripture says that some, without knowing it, hosted angels of the Lord, angels in human form, yes, or angels. Remember that Revelation speaks of the ministers of God as angels, even if we don't look like angels. Hallelujah. But the Bible doesn't speak of us in the ministry as angels. That's why it says, "To the angel of the church in Philadelphia, to the angel in such and such a place, to the angel." But what angel is that? It's actually talking about the minister and the ministries. Hosting, brother, is a virtue, I would say, it is a gift that allows, brother, to attend to the needy, to attend to the traveler, to attend to someone who has arrived, for example, for some event. In July, we have events, and suddenly it will fall to you to host someone from the brothers who come from outside. But if you are going to do it, do it with all your heart, brother, because it is a gift that has the blessing of the Lord. How many say Amen? Now, both the host and the hosted should also have a gift from God. No, if you are being hosted in a place that is not your home, get up early. Hallelujah. Don't let the owners wake you up. Forgive me for saying this, but that's part of the advice we give to the workers we send. Look, if a brother is hosting you, get up early. Look, if there is a need for cleaning, do some cleaning. Hallelujah. If they feed you at the table, don't leave your plate on the table, pick it up, take it over there. If you can, wash it. That's for the worker. If they let you, because sometimes they don't let you. But if they let you, "Ah, here are the others, brother." "Ah, well, glory to God." No, don't be like that. "I'll just wash this one." Wash everything. Yes, man, because the one who hosts will have a blessing from God, and the one who is hosted should be grateful that they are being hosted. Give him an applause to the Lord if you can. That's how things should be. But anyway, let's return to this woman. She was a host. She had an important gift. Look, many times the importance that people have becomes an obstacle for them to serve. Listen to what I'm saying. The importance that people sometimes have becomes an obstacle for them to serve others well. But this woman, no. This woman was important. We don't know what position she had. Look, let me tell you more or less. Later, Elisha asks her, "Look, look, Shunammite woman," because she doesn't have a name, "Look, and what do you need?" Jessie asked, because Elisha sent word to ask her. "Ask the Shunammite woman what she needs. Perhaps I can help you," said Elisha. "Ask her if she needs me to speak to the king." Listen to that. He sent to ask her. "Ask her if she needs anything from the king. Ask her if she needs anything from a judge, from an important person, from a governor." Ask her. Do you know what the Shunammite woman said? She said, "I am well, thank God." That means she wasn't in need. She wasn't poor. No, she wasn't someone who had nothing. She was an important person. But her importance did not prevent her from being a good host. Her importance did not prevent her from serving. Look, brother, the greater the Lord allows you to be, the more humble you should be to serve. Give him an applause to the God of heaven. How many give glory to God? That is the mistake many people make: when they are down, they work and serve like never before, but when God lifts them up, exalts them, takes them to positions, they no longer remember anyone. "Do you remember Pancho? Pancho, do you remember me?" "Who are you?" Hallelujah. "Who are you?" "I don't know Francisco Pancho." The position that God allows you to rise to should not prevent you from serving the God of heaven. Give a strong applause to the Lord. Let's go to the next point. Number two, in verse 9, there is the second, third, and fourth characteristic. Almost the third, second, and third. Verse 9 says, I am in Second Kings 4, verse 9, to recall the verse we are reading. It says: "And she said to her husband, 'Listen, behold now, I understand that this man who always passes by our house is a holy man of God.'" Listen, listen. And she said to her husband. That means she was a submissive woman. She didn't let him into the house without her husband knowing. She submitted. Even later she says, "Look, my darling, and isn't it possible that we can make him a little room on the terrace?" What would you have said as a husband? "Are we able to?" "What are you saying?" No, remember that they were important. If she was important, it's because he was also important. Surely they had the means. It is interesting, brother, I have seen it, I have been a witness to this, I have been a participant, for example, when God begins a work in a place, He always puts the right people, brother, the right people to serve within the ministry. God always puts the right people, the right people to host, the right people to serve, the right people to provide, the right people to help. God always puts the people. When God has something with a city, when God has something with a people, He sends and provides the minister, but within that, He already has those who will serve as support within the ministry. He already has them. This woman was not just anyone. But note, please, the characteristic is that she was submissive. She was a woman who knew how to give her husband his place. She didn't hide from him that she was inviting the servant of God to eat. No, she never hid it from him. She told him, and later she says, "If we can build a small room." So, submission. Ah, brother, if that's good, brother, that women should be submissive. Yes, but the man must be subject to Christ. Hallelujah. Look at me here, please. Yes, Amen. That the sisters should be submissive. Yes, but the woman should be subject to her husband, but the husband should be subject to Christ. No one escapes here, brother, right? Blessed are the pastors, because they don't have to give an account. How can they not have to give an account? Well, I have a pastor, Brother Isauro Bielman is my pastor, and besides, I have to give an account to the One above, because it is written that the sheep should be obedient to their shepherds, because they are the ones who will give an account, an account of your souls. But submission. She was submissive. She was a hospitable woman. How not? But she was a woman who had learned to be subject to her head. Do you think we need to learn to be submissive, brother? I think so. The letter of the Apostle James says, it says that we should submit ourselves, or that we should place ourselves under the mighty power of God. It says, "Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." That means that he recognizes when a man, when a woman are under authority. Did you hear that, brother? He recognizes, he manages to identify when a man and a woman are under authority. He manages to recognize it, he manages to see it. He cannot see the heart, he cannot see the mind, but he can see it through actions, because obedience is not just words, brother. Obedience by word is easy, right? "Ah, no, I submit," right, "husband?" And what do they do? Hallelujah. He just looks at you again and says, "No." But obedience by word is easy. No, but obedience by deed, that's complicated, brother. That's why both women and men have been called to be under the mighty hand of the Lord, because that brings blessing to our lives. But also, it gives you backing before your spiritual enemies. "Submit yourselves to God's mighty hand. Resist the devil, and he will flee." That means that when he sees the submission we have to God, he will run away because he sees God's backing. And if not, look, brother, remember that example of those two characters who were casting out demons, do you remember? Have you read the Bible? It's there in the Bible. Two, two itinerant exorcists, some biblical scholars say. Two itinerant exorcists. That means they went from city to city looking for demons to cast out. Look, that's what they liked to do. But they ran into someone. They ran into a demon-possessed man, whom they saw the Apostle Paul had a formula that clearly worked. And Paul prayed in the name of Jesus Christ. And how many believe that the name of Jesus Christ has power? How many believe that the name of Jesus Christ has power? We are seeing that in the Wednesday studies. The name of Jesus Christ has power. Peter and John entered the temple of the Beautiful Gate. There was a lame man, a paralytic there, and they said, "We have no silver or gold, but what we have we give you. In the name of Jesus Christ, rise and walk." And that paralytic got up and began not only to walk, but it says he leaped for joy and entered the temple, leaping and praising the Lord. But those two, who had only seen the formula, said to the demon-possessed man, "In the name of Jesus Christ whom Paul preaches, you go out." Do you remember? And then the demon looked at them because the demon understood that they were people without submission, that they were people without authority, that they were people without backing. Demons, please, I want you to pay close attention to this. The demons understood that those two did not have God's backing, they did not have God's authority, and they replied to Paul, "We know Jesus, and we know Christ, but who are you?" They grabbed them, beat them, and stripped them both. That's why many of the things we undertake sometimes don't have God's backing, because we haven't learned to be submissive. Say with me, "Submit." Say with me, "Submit." Well, how many want to have the Lord's backing? To always have it, brother. It doesn't mean you've never had backing. How not? Perhaps yes, but sometimes, brother, it's like the backing seems to decrease, it seems to be lost, because we somehow deviate from true submission, we deviate from true obedience, and suddenly the one who was meek, the one who was humble, the one who was obedient, suddenly, Hallelujah, suddenly becomes boastful and jumpy. And what then? And what about that? And then one begins to lose the Lord's backing, because that's not how you get it. You get it through obedience and submission to God. Give an applause to the Lord if you feel like it. [Applause] Number three. I will read verse 9 again, please. Verse 9 says, we already read it. It says: "And she said to her husband, 'Behold now, I understand that this man who always passes by our house is what? A holy man of God.'" How did she know, brother? How did she know? She knew from the first time she saw him, perhaps not. Perhaps he passed by her house, she invited him to her house, she insisted on feeding him, suddenly she saw him praying, suddenly she began to see that he was a peaceful man, that he was a man of the Lord, although you remember that Elijah and Elisha sometimes became agitated because of the anointing of the Lord. But there are two ways you can verify if someone is a man or woman of God. There are two ways. Number one, and perhaps the most important, by discernment of the Spirit. The Bible speaks of the believer needing discernment, brother. How important it is for the believer to learn to discern what comes from God and what does not. You have to learn to discern. How? Well, in that aspect, Second Corinthians gives us an overview and an idea of how to do it. Second Corinthians chapter 11, verses 13 to 14, the Apostle Paul is again teaching that it is important to recognize what comes from God and what does not. Second Corinthians 11:13 says: "For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ." That means there are true ones, but there are also false ones. We should not doubt that. As a church, you and I must understand that that is what exists in the world. There are true people like the true church, but there are also false churches. Yes, of course. Likewise, there are ministers, ministers of God. There are true ones, but he also sends ministers. And it says: "For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ." And it is no wonder, it is no wonder, because Satan himself disguises himself as an angel of light. Many times believers think that he will appear with horns and a tail and say, "I am him," with a voice, a chilling, terrifying voice, "I am him." Then one says, "Ah, no, if he appears, I will rebuke him." Yes, but the problem is that he doesn't appear like that. The problem is that he appears dressed in light. The problem is that he appears dressed as sheep that are not sheep. So, how to discern what is from God and what is not from God? There are two biblical ways. The first is in First Corinthians 12, and it speaks of the spiritual gift of discernment. Spiritual discernment. When you have that gift, that gift allows, brother, to feel, to experience, to see, to smell. "Something smells fishy here." If you understand me, "Something smells strange here." But where does that come from? Some who don't know God call it instinct, but it's not instinct, it's a gift from God, according to First Corinthians 12 and according to Romans chapter 12. It is a spiritual gift given to the believer for what? To discern between good and evil, between what comes from God and what does not come from God, between a crooked business and a business from the Lord, between a job that God opened for you and a job that the devil opened for you. If you understand me, brother. How wonderful it would be, how wonderful it would be if the gift of discernment were so active in our lives that we could detect all of that. Now, brother, not everyone does that. But the Bible says so. We read the text, we read Second Corinthians chapter 11, verses 13 to 14. Now, the gift of spiritual discernment helps you. I already told you where it is: Corinthians 12 and Romans 12. It helps you to spiritually detect that something, or someone, or a place, or a thing, or a business is not from God. Now, the other way is the way, let's say, the more mechanical way. Ah, I missed a verse here that I was supposed to bring you, but it's just not there. It's that text that says that those who have matured have their senses exercised, they have their gifts exercised. But that's because we are growing in the Lord's movement. Now, you want to know a person, look at the fruits they leave behind. Look at the fruits. What fruit do they leave behind? Because the Bible says, "By their fruits you will know them." That is the second way to detect. But that takes longer. That takes longer. You need to be alert, to be attentive. What does my pastor say? My pastor, Brother Isauro Bielman, the Apostle Sauro Bielman, a long time ago, gave us instructions on how to examine what we are leaving behind, because if the sheep is not a sheep but a wolf, like the one we are talking about, then it has two interesting characteristics. Hallelujah. Let's see if the wolf offends anyone. The wolf has a big snout, right? And a longer tail. So, to know who someone is, listen to what they say and look at the trail they leave behind. Hallelujah. If they leave quarrels in their path, if they leave enmities, if they leave traps, if they leave what? Gossip, if they leave lies. Ah, it sounds like, in the best of cases, let's say, in the best of cases, perhaps they are simply not even converted. In the best of cases, the person is perhaps not even converted. But the worst would be to start negotiating, or even worse, to start associating with a wolf. That would be very serious. Hallelujah. So, how to discern? And this woman knew how to discern because she understood who the man of God was. It says, you don't see in the Bible that the woman invited anyone else to eat. That means she was careful too. How many say Amen? Are we okay so far, brother? Let me show you the last thing. Verse 10. We have plenty of time, so let's look at the fourth point. Second Kings chapter 4, verse 10. It says: "I beg you." This is the request she is making to her husband. "I beg you, let us make a small room with walls, and put there a bed, a table, and a chair, so that when he comes to us, he may stay in it." And verse 11 says that Elisha passed by there, they offered him the room, and he stayed there and slept. It says he slept there that night. But the point is that this woman made a room. That means, listen to what I'm going to say. Take it as a figure, not necessarily something interpretive, but it can be a figure. This woman knew how to order her house. She put the basics. She didn't put extravagances. Well, of course, there weren't other things that we have today, but if she was an important woman, surely she had at least the luxury of that time, being an important woman. But she put for the man of God, she put the basics: a bed, a table, and a chair, and she put a lamp. The three things, which are four in total, but the three things have three important meanings. The bed is rest and repose that one should have at home. The woman knew what should be in a home. How many know that in a home there should be rest from God? In every Christian home there should be rest from the Lord. If there is a lot of struggle, a lot of battle in the home, something has happened, something has happened that we have not ordered the home properly. But in the home, there should be rest. There should be fellowship, which is the chair, and the table is for eating. It is interesting that the Lord gave the deepest truths to the disciples always when eating. When He ate, He revealed many things to the disciples. That means that the believer, at home, notice carefully, at home, should have a place to meet with his beloved Lord. Look, brother, communion is not just for the church. Communion with God should be at home first. Look, I'll put it this way: if you are a worshiper at home, it will be easy for you to worship here. If you are someone who reads scripture and pays attention to the word at home, it will be easy for you here. Because you are already used to it at home. We only come here to reflect what we do at home. Hallelujah. If you sleep at home, give an applause to the Lord. Better not to get into trouble. But the chair and the table are for fellowship. That's why I never advise, notice, brother, I never advise you to lie down while reading the Bible, because in five minutes you will be asleep. If you want to study the Bible, sit at a table, sit at a desk, sit in a place, sit in a place where you are comfortable to read the scriptures, but have time to dedicate a good portion of scripture, a good reading of the Bible, a good analysis. What did the Lord mean by this? And if you have tools to study, even better. If you have a dictionary there, if you have a concordance, if you have a biblical commentary, then you open the scripture and say, "Ah, how beautiful what it says there." But what did it mean? Then you can go to those tools. Oh, oh, then you can say to the Lord, "Lord, speak to me through the scriptures." I don't have tools, but you can speak to me about this. I assure you that the Spirit of the Lord can speak to you. I assure you. It's just like that. Perhaps at first it won't work. That's why many people stop reading quickly. Notice, brother, many people stop reading quickly. "It's that I feel that so many names, that so many places, and worse, that sometimes the Bible, the Bible is written in a very ancient time, the '60 version, the old versions, brother, there are words that sometimes one doesn't understand." But there are new versions. There are new versions with a more current, contemporary vocabulary that one can cite. But you sit down and say to the Lord, "Lord, would you like to speak to me through this passage of scripture?" And I assure you that God will speak to you. Perhaps not the first few times. Perhaps not the first few times, but I assure you that if you keep reading, keep reading, keep reading, and the Spirit who wrote that word will have a word for you too. Give a strong applause to the Lord. I finish, I finish with the last element, and that is that she put a lamp, and the lamp symbolizes light and symbolizes God's guidance. In a house where there is no light, there is God. That's why it's very common for it to arrive, because there is no light to reject it, because it is written: "Where there is light, darkness is dispersed." It is written: "Where there is light, darkness has no place." Enter a dark room, turn on the light, and immediately the darkness leaves. If you have light in your home, you will have guidance from the Spirit, you will have guidance from God. The woman knew the elements very well. One needs God in their life. And I finish. Let's read a concluding text. Accompany me to Second Kings 4:15-17. And it's better if you stand up so we can read it together and close the topic so as not to give it more space. Second Kings chapter 4, verses 15 to 17. Then he said, "Call her." And he called her, and she stood at the door. And he said to her, "At this time next year, you will embrace a son." And she said, "No, my lord, man of God, do not deceive your servant." But the woman conceived and gave birth to a son the following year, at the time Elisha had told her. It is worth being a host. It is worth having discernment. It is worth being submissive. It is always worth it. There is a reward from God for those who are under the shadow of the God of heaven. Close your eyes. [Music] Close your eyes to the [Music] Lord. I don't know if you need these characteristics. I, yes, I need them to be amplified, to grow, to mature even more. But the wonderful thing is that the Lord is ready to say to a woman and to a man who have these characteristics for the Lord. I don't know what you need. This woman needed a son. This woman could not have children, but she believed that God could perform a miracle in her life. Do you believe that God can perform a miracle in your life? Why don't you come forward and ask Him? If you believe it's worth asking Him, come and ask Him yourself. Hallelujah. We adore you, Lord. We bless you, Lord. Lord, pour out upon our lives, pour out a blessing according to the need of your people. Those of us who want to advance, those of us who want to [Music] grow. Come to the feet of the One who sent Elisha. [Music] Come to the feet of the Lord. Elisha is not here today, but the Prophet of Prophets, Jesus, is here.
