Hi, I'm Charlie White, and in today's video, I'm going to show you a foolproof way to drill into tiles. A lot of people get quite scared about drilling into tiles, but it's actually really simple if you've got the right tools for the job.
So, today's toolkit, we've got the all-important drill bit, which I'll come onto in a minute. We've got an electric drill, we've got a dustpan to catch everything coming out of the hole, and we've got a little tub here to fill with water that we're going to use to cool the drill.
Now, there are lots of drill bits on the market that you can use to drill through tiles. You'll see, typically, they're characterized with an arrow-shaped tip. But the drill bit I'm going to use today is from our Meg, and it's just a very good quality drill bit. And it comes with the tile drill itself, which again, has an arrow-shaped tip, and then a masonry drill bit as well, which is great because once you've gone through the tile, if you keep going into the brickwork behind with your tile drill, you're going to blunt the drill. So you go through the tile with this, and then you swap to a standard masonry drill bit once you know that you're clear of the tile.
Now, it says on the instructions that you need to use a constant flow of water across the drill bit when you're drilling. How many of us are going to be able to do that? You're typically doing this sort of job towards the end of a project, and you don't want a lot of water, a lot of mess flowing down the wall. So, what I do, which seems to work pretty well, is I've got a container of water, and as I'm drilling, I'm going to just dip the drill bit into the water to keep it cool.
So, in goes the drill bit. I'm not going to have my drill and hammer action for this. I'm not going to try and make a mark or imprint onto the tile. I'm literally going to carefully place the drill bit in position, top and underneath, then I'm going to start drilling.
Okay, you see we've got an initial imprint already. Okay, we're going to dip the drill bit in the water just to cool it down and carry on. Okay, once again, we're just going to dip the drill bit in the water. You might hear a little fizz as it cools down. I'm just applying constant but gentle pressure and dipping into the water.
Okay, now I'm through the tile. Now, I do just want to go a little bit further into the wall to take the wall plug and the screw. So I'm going to use the drill bit that comes with it. There we go. Down three. You see that, even though the hole I had to drill was really close to the edge of the tile here, the tile hasn't shattered, and we've got a beautiful clean hole.
Okay, we're going to do one more now, just to show that. On the flick, position the drill bit gently against the tile, just move it around a bit, and then off we go. Dip it in the water. Tip number three. Quick Hoover, and then we have it. Another beautiful clean hole. This drill bit really does go through tiles like a knife through butter. It's an incredible little tool.
I really hope you found this video useful. Remember, the same principles that I've set out in this video apply whether you're drilling into granite, marble, ceramic, or softer tiles. The key is to buy a decent drill bit and keep it cool by constantly dipping it into water. A friend of mine recently was having terrible problems drilling into his tiles because the drill bit got so hot it overheated. Another tip came off. Just really important to keep your tile job cool.
