Okay, habit installation protocol, University College London. Here's what they said: 66 days practicing a new skill until you reach the point of automaticity. Remember, the brain is neur—remember neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity, the brain can grow. It's like a muscle. The more you use it. Remember the, what was the thing we talked about yesterday? The metaphor. It was sort of a, a model. What was it? It was a grassy meadow. Who can help me with this? A meadow. As you practice each day for 66 days, the meadow becomes a—you guys are phenomenal—the trail with daily practice becomes a road. A highway. Is this good? Is this good? Show of hands. Is this great? Like a, is this cool? Come on. It's pretty, it's really, it's a great metaphor, isn't it? So, and then the highway becomes a what? Super. Superhighway. Superhighway with practice. Oh, advanced level. Myelin. Who said myelin? I, one of my titans. Myelin, the fatty tissue, in many ways, I believe, responsible for advanced perception. Advanced perception. Mmm. I mentioned Anders Ericsson, 3.44 hours of practice a day. 10,000 hours. We've heard about that.
So, the larger point, because right now my obsession is that you take this fire hose of information and you start the process of installing the one or two habits. The others can come. Okay, Mark, to your point, the others can come. The other insights can come. Here's one of the things I want you to consider: if there's, if you're overwhelmed, you won't start. So, to be of service to you, I think there's only one thing you need to now practice. All the other ideas, but here's where you start. I, I suggest you start one habit: the 5 AM Club. The 5 AM Club. That's it. And how long are you going to do it for? Because how, how long, my friends at the back? Yeah. I know. But let's, let's worry about the next 66 days because I don't want you to fall off the wagon. So, 66 days, according to University College of London, to install a new habit. Neuroplasticity. I've given you this metaphor. D.N. Consistency is the mother of mastery. Okay. The 5 AM Club. And not only the 5 AM Club, it's the 202020 formula. That's the one thing you need to worry about. Not worry about. The one thing I encourage you to focus on. It could be other habits. I encourage everyone in this room, do this, and everything else comes later. Who's committed today, here, now, from the deepest place within you, your, your good name, your personal honor at stake, to do whatever it takes for the next 66 days to rise at 5 AM and do the 202020 formula? Show of hands. Stand up. Amazing. Amazing. Most of the room. If most of the room, most of the room. Phenomenal. Hold hands, please. Remember that all changes, and it's me, it'll be messy, and it's going to be amazing. Let's go. Have a seat. Give yourself a round of applause.
So, let's go through all changes. This is where it's going to be heard. How long? 66 days. Is the entire, the entire process is 66 days. This is the 22 days. Hard at first. If it wasn't hard, it wouldn't be valuable. Change. Think about it. You are so—this phase is all about destruction. You're tearing down your old habits. If you're interested in the neuroscience of it, you're, you're atrophying your old neural pathways and you're constructing new neural pathways. Is that going to be hard at first? Of course, it's going to be hard at first. Please remember this. You might want to write it down: everything you now found easy, you once found difficult. 22 days. It's going to be hard. You're destroying the old neural pathways. And emotionally, Richard Boach said, "What the caterpillar thinks is the end of the world, the master knows is the butterfly." 22 days. The old part of you, in terms of your mindsets, heart sets, hell sets, and soul sets, must experience a—who's been with me—a nice and loud death. A death. So that the next level of you can be—what was the word I used yesterday?—reborn. So, a death of the old neural pathways and emotional architectures. It's going to be hard. This is 22 days, destruction. When you feel exhausted, when you feel like giving up, please remember: world-class is not an event, it's a process. When people around you say, "You're exhausted, you're unhappy, you're complaining, you're grumpy," for the first 22 days, approximately, and everyone says something's wrong, what are you going to remind yourself? Everything is right. And phase three, growth. Correct. Exactly. But everything is right. This is the process. So, the first stage one is there. Stage two, how much? How long? Roughly. Good. Everyone's with me. It seems so. You know, this is really escape velocity. You're overcoming your old pathways. Did you know that the space shuttle uses more fuel in the 60 seconds after takeoff than in the entire circumference around the world, the Earth? Why? Because it must overcome gravitational forces. Hard at first. 22 days. It's messy. See the, the method to my magic of you guys holding hands. All change is what? Messy in the middle. It's gorgeous at the end. So, it's hard at first, and it's messy in the middle. 22 days. This is installation. How many people have gone through a home renovation? Is it messy in the middle? Because it's dusty, and the walls are coming down, and there's trash everywhere, and the neighbors are complaining, and your partner is calling you crazy for doing this. And those of you who haven't done a renovation, you don't know what I'm talking about, right? But it's messy in the middle. You feel like giving up. Of course, it's messy. You're tearing down walls, you're building new, new rooms. So, it's messy in the middle. So, this is the installation part portion. And just think about a home renovation. And then finally, as you make your way from the beginning of a new skill, in this case, it's the 5 AM Club, because I want you to take, do this one ritual because it'll lead to every other ritual. The 5 AM Club. The 5 AM Club and the 202020 formula is the one habit that elevates every other habit of your life. The 5 AM Club and the 202020 method is what habit researchers call the Keystone Habit. A keystone habit. It's the one habit that raises every other habit. Is this interesting? You only, only have to do one thing for 66 days. And trust me, we'll talk after that. So, from the beginning to automaticity, final 22 days. Who's with me so far? Show of hands. Yeah. Good. Good. Good. 22 days. This is implementation. You're on the short roads. You're on the way to automaticity. And you apply helpful. Show of hands. The way I walked you through a model on habit installation.
