The rapid growth of technology has brought about significant changes in human life. Smartphones and social media have completely transformed our lifestyle. However, the world is now discussing another, more serious phenomenon: the excessive use of generative artificial intelligence, or GAI, a revolutionary technology. It is turning into a new kind of addiction.
This condition, known as Generative Artificial Intelligence Addiction Syndrome, has become a behavioral disorder that significantly impacts human emotional and intellectual levels, going beyond mere internet usage. As tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Character.AI become part of our daily lives, the question arises: are we unknowingly getting trapped in a new kind of digital web?
When we examine what this AI addiction truly is, we see it differs from past Internet Gaming Disorder or Social Media Addiction. On social media, we follow a passive approach, observing information shared by others. However, when interacting with artificial intelligence, we become a co-creator. AI provides responses based on the instructions we give, writes stories, and resolves doubts. This active participation creates a unique psychological satisfaction in the user. This satisfaction, in turn, becomes a motivation to use AI again and again, gradually leading to uncontrollable addiction.
The most frightening aspect is that individuals reach a point where they even pawn their own thinking ability to AI. Recognizing the symptoms of this condition is very important. The inability to write even a simple email without using AI tools, the constant desire to talk to AI chatbots, and a preference for AI over conversations with real humans are its primary symptoms. Excessive anxiety, anger, and restlessness in situations where AI is unavailable can be considered withdrawal symptoms. Seeking AI's help even for simple decisions like what to eat or what to wear [music] affects an individual's autonomy. Gradually, this leads to social isolation and a decline in professional or educational performance. The problem takes on the nature of a mental [music] illness when one starts feeling the need for AI's presence to control their own emotions.
There are scientific reasons why humans become emotionally attached to AI so quickly. Artificial intelligence tools are designed to behave in a human-like manner. This is called anthropomorphism. AI becomes a friend ready to praise and encourage us. Conversations with AI do not involve the conflicts or grievances that can arise in real relationships. This increases the level of a chemical called dopamine in the user's brain, providing happiness. Humans return to AI seeking the sense of security that this dopamine surge provides. Teenagers, in particular, are highly susceptible to falling into this trap. As they are in an age of forming their identity, they see AI as a friend who will judge them. This stunts their social growth and deprives them of the ability to face real-world challenges.
AI addiction can be broadly categorized into three main types. The first is constant interaction with chatbots. Using such bots for emotional sharing, beyond just seeking information, is dangerous. The second is AI companions. Those experiencing loneliness make these digital friends a part of their lives. The feeling that these friends will never die or leave us leads the user [music] into an illusory world. The third category is AI pornography or synthetic porn. This can distort individuals' sexual perspectives and cause dissatisfaction in real relationships. Such platforms, without restrictions, mentally weaken users and cause them to lose self-control.
The impacts of this addiction are far-reaching. Excessive dependence on AI destroys human creativity and critical thinking. As we get used to asking AI for things we should think through and discover, our brain's processing power decreases. The ability to make decisions is lost, and one becomes dependent on something else for everything. This can lead to a decrease in self-confidence and mental states like depression [music]. In some cases, acting on false information or dangerous advice provided by AI can even be life-threatening. [music] The state where individuals can no longer distinguish between reality and imagination poses a great threat to society itself. [music]
Conscious interventions are essential to escape this peril. We must recognize that AI is not a substitute for our intellect, but merely a tool to assist us. [music] Setting specific time limits for technology use is important. Incorporating tech-free times in life, without social media or digital devices, is crucial. Using pen and paper instead of digital devices for writing and thinking can help reclaim creativity. Time should be found for direct conversations with others and for engaging in social activities. When experiencing loneliness, instead of talking to AI, one should approach real friends or family members.
Mental health professionals also play a significant role in addressing this problem. Therapeutic methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can provide relief to those facing AI addiction. Such therapies help reduce emotional attachment to AI and regain self-control. Simultaneously, legal regulations are necessary to ensure that companies developing AI follow responsible design principles. These companies must be prepared to eliminate features that make users addicted and promote safe usage. Precise lessons on the correct use of AI should also be included in the education sector [music].
In conclusion, Generative Artificial Intelligence is a double-edged sword. While it helps increase our productivity, it also has the potential to make us its slaves. As we embrace the benefits of technology, we must also be aware of its drawbacks. We should not allow any digital system to replace real human relationships and our own thinking ability. AI should be our servant, never our master. This realization is the only way to protect our mental health in the future digital world.
